Artificial pacemakers for Arrhythmias

Often our heart beats faster than usual and it feels like it skipped a beat. This can be a
sign of Arrhythmia or abnormal or irregular heartbeat. If you have experienced this,
there is no need to worry. Arrhythmias are fairly common, especially as one gets older.
Arrhythmias are harmless in most situations but it can be extremely dangerous,
requiring appropriate treatment.

One of the most advanced heart rhythm disorder treatments is the implantation of
artificial pacemakers. An artificial pacemaker is a medical device which uses electrical
impulses, delivered by electrodes contracting hearts muscles, to regulate the heartbeat.
The primary purpose of this pacemaker is to maintain an adequate heart rate, either
because the hearts natural pacemaker is malfunctioning, or because there is a
blockage in the hearts electrical conduction system.

The most basic form of an artificial pacemaker monitors the hearts original electrical
rhythm. When the pacemaker does not detect a heartbeat within a normal beat-to- beat
time period, it will stimulate the ventricle of the heart with a brief low voltage pulse. This
continues for every beat. Over the years of constant medical research and
advancement in technology, a variety of pacemakers and modes of pacing have been
developed, to restore or sustain a regular heartbeat in different ways. Pacemakers may
also be single, dual, or triple chambered:

1. Single-chamber pacemakers have one lead to carry impulses to and from either the
right atrium or right ventricle.

2. A dual-chamber pacemaker, characteristically, has two leads, one to the right atrium
and one to the right ventricle, which allows a heart rhythm more naturally resembling the
normal actions of the heart.

3. Triple-chambered pacemakers typically have one lead in the right atrium, one to
stimulate the right ventricle, and one to stimulate the left ventricle. These devices are
used in patients with weakened heart muscles (resulting in heart failure). These
pacemakers resynchronize the ventricles and may improve the efficiency of hearts
contractions, commonly referred to as biventricular pacemakers.

By regulating the hearts rhythm, a pacemaker can often eliminate the symptoms of
bradycardia, which is the hearts abnormally slow heart action, facilitating more energy
and lesser shortness of breath. However, a pacemaker is not a cure. It will not prevent
or stop heart disease, nor will it prevent heart attacks. Doctors recommend pacemakers
based on the severity of cardiac conditions, hence, the benefits may also vary, but the
greatest benefit of an artificial pacemaker is a normalized heart rhythm, which improves
the quality of life.
