CM Preparation Course: Session CM1

Part a: Introduction to the CM Exam

Matthew J. Esther - Managing Director / Partner at Webb Yates & Esther Engineers

This session is a key step in a candidates preparation for the CM Exam, it will give an overview of the
essential aspects of the exam including the standard expected by the examiners and examination
technique.

About the Speaker: Matthew is a City University graduate and is a Fellow of both the IStructE and ICE.
His experience lies in the design, management and construction of tall buildings, long span structures and
stadia. He is committed to a collaborative design approach from concept through to detailed design.

Matthew is a past Vice-President of the IStructE and Past-Chairman of the Middle-East Regional Group.
He has served the IStructE in various capacities and has delivered lectures for the Chartered Member
Exam preparation course since 2009.

Part b: Concept Design

John Price, Construction Manager, Arcadis.

Engineering: An amalgamation of ingenium meaning cleverness and ingenaire meaning to contrive/devise

The session will talk about the importance of concept design and producing two distinct and viable themes
when preparing for the CM Exam.

About the Speaker:

Graduated 1990 Leeds University, England, UK. Chartered in 2000. Predominately steelwork background in
the UK. Over 10 years Construction Supervision experience in the UAE, Iraq and India. Institution
involvement includes Committee member in UK and UAE. TRR Route A and B assessor, PRI (Part 3
interviews) and currently Senior Vice Chairman (UAE Branch).
