Teachers activity Students activity
A. Lesson
Presentation
Let us proceed and study the basic (Students will listen)
elements and symbols of music.

1. The staff
a. Staff
The staff is composed of 5
horizontal lines and 4 spaces.
b. Measure/Bar
A space between two barlines.
c. Bar Line
A vertical line that divides the staff
into measures.
d. Double Bar Line
Signifies an end of a musical
section or a piece of music.

You might be confused about the staff Yes, sir!

and the measure because they look
similar. Shall I explain it further?

*Teacher uses the blackboard to draw

the staff and measures
The horizontal lines and the spaces is
the staff. A measure is the section of a
musical staff that comes between two
bar lines. Does that make it clear? Yes, sir!

*Shows picture of a staff

Can we identify how many measures

are there in this staff? 3

Thats right!

How many are in this one? 5

Very good!

2. Kinds of notes
Let us now proceed to indentifying the Note a symbol expressing relative
kinds of notes. Can someone read this duration of time in music. The duration if
slide for the class? determined by the shape or form of the
note.

Thank you very much! Now here are

the kinds of notes representing their
number of beats.

*Shows picture of the kinds of notes

Whole note

Half note

Quarter note (and so on)

Let us now proceed and discuss the Time signature an indication of
time signature. Can someone read the rhythm , generally expressed as a
slide for the class? fraction with the numerator giving the
number of beats in each bar and the
denominator defining the beat as a
division of a whole note.

Thank you very much!

To make it simpler, the number on the

top indicates how many beats there are
in a masure. The bottom number
inicates the type of note to get 1 beat.

Here is a staff with a 4/4 time

signature.

How many notes are in this staff? Four.

What is the type of note used? Quarter notes.

Correct!

B. Application
Handclapping

Here is a staff with a 4/4 time

signature.

*Teacher demonstrates on how to clap

the notes shown on the staff.

Now lets clap the rhythm together. (*claps rhythm)

Very good!

Here is another one. Can you clap it on

your own? (*claps rhythm)

Thats great!
