should not push them to talk if they don't want to. Parents should also watch for the danger signs: some

answer to each question (10p):
One of the most urgent environmental problems in the world today is the
shortage of clean water. Having clean drinking water is basic human right. But acid
rain, industrial pollution and garbage have made many sources of water undrinkable.
Lakes, reservoirs and even entire seas have become vast pools of poison. Lake Baikal in
Russia is one of the largest lakes in the world. It contains a rich variety of animals and
plants, including 1,300 rare species that do not exist anywhere else in the world. But
they are being destroyed by the massive volumes of industrial effluent which pour into
the lake everyday. Even where law existed, the government did not have the power to
enforce them. Most industries simply ignore the regulations. The Mediterranean Sea
occupies 1% of the worlds water surface. But it is the dumping ground for 50% of all
marine pollution. Almost 16 countries regularly throw industrial wastes a few miles off
shore .
Water is free to everyone. A few years ago people thought that the supply of clean water
in the world was limitless. Today, many water supplies have been ruined by pollution and
sewage . Clean water is now scarce, and we are at last beginning to respect this precious
source. We should do something now.

A. acid rain B. industrial pollution.

2. Many sources of water are not drinkable because of _______ .

C. It has 1,300 rare species that do not exist anywhere else in the world .
D. The government did not have the power to enforce laws and regulations.
4. How many countries throw industrial waste into the Mediterranean Sea regularly?
A. nearly 16 B. exactly 16.

LIFE OF A MAN
Thomas is now in his sixties, and is one of the many homeless people
who live on the streets; he buys a newspaper most days. Today, with his
fellow tramps, he reads about yesterdays student demonstration.
Like many of the tramps that live under the bridge in New York,
Thomas was not always so poor. A long time ago he was in the Navy, and
like many who have been to sea for a long time, he has stayed slim and
fit. Despite the strict organization on board ship, he loved the life, and had
the opportunity to see many countries. He visited Poland and Russia; in
South Africa he realized what he valued in each country was the people
he met. He was always astonished and delighted by the ways in which the
people he met differed from one country to another. Some day, he hopes,
everyone will see the world as he does.
After many happy years in Navy, he had to retire. The good things in
life always come to an end. His mother and father had long since died
and hed lost touch with his other relatives. He came to New York and
became an industrial designer. He was happy, although it wasnt the same
as the sea. He never wanted to get married and have children.
And then there was the period of darkness. He smiles sadly. He
shrugs his shoulders and looks at his hands. There are tears in the corners
of his eyes. This is something that he cannot bring himself to talk about.
It all went wrong, he whispers.
He was silent for a minute; then recovered. He began to talk more
loudly. Look at me now- it makes me angry. And what about the
President? Hes been in power for years, and look what hes done for us.
Nothing! Im still out on the streets and live the life of a tramp.

Question V: ( 2.5 ms)

Read the passage and choose the best answer (c on vn
ri chn cu tr li ng nht)
It is very important to have healthy teeth. Good teeth help us to chew
our food. They also help us to look nice. How does a tooth go bad? The
decay begins in a little crack in the enamed covering of the tooth. This
happens after germs and bits of food have collected there. Then the decay
slowly spreads inside the tooth. Eventually, poison goes into blood, and we
may feel quite ill.
How can we keep our teeth healthy?. Firstly, we ought to visit our
dentist twice a year. He can fill the small holes in our teeth before they
destroy the teeth. He can examine our teeth to check that they are
growing in the right way. Unfortunately, many people wait until they have
toothache before they see a dentist.
Secondly, we should brush our teeth with a toothbrush and fluoride
toothpaste at least twice a day- once after breakfast and once before we
go to bed. We can also use wooden toothpicks to clean between our teeth
after a meal.
Thirdly, we should eat food that is good for our teeth and our body: milk,
cheese, fish, brown bread, potatoes, red rice, raw vegetables and fresh
fruit. Chocolate, sweets, biscuits and cakes are bad, especially when we
eat them between meals. They are harmful because they stick to our teeth
and cause decay.

IX-Read the passage below and choose the best answer for each question:
A geyser is the result of underground water under the combined conditions
of temperatures and increased pressure beneath the surface of the earth. Since
temperature rises approximately one degree F for every sixty feet under the earths
surface and the increases with depth, water that seeps down in cracks ans fissures
until it reaches to the rocks in the earths interior becomes heated to a temperature
in excess of 290degree. Because of the greater presure, it shoots out of the surface
in the form of steam and hot water. The result is a geyser.
For the most part, geysers are located in three regions of the world: New
Zealand, Ice land, and the Yellowstone National Park area of the United States. The
most geyser in the world is Old Faithful in Yellowstone Park. Old Faithful erupts

Part III. Read the following passage then choose the
best answer by circling its corresponding A, B, C or D. (1
point)
The thing I like most about living on a farm when I was small
was the change of seasons. Spring, summer, autumn and winter -
I could see them all come and go and each one was completely
different. If I hadn't been born and raised in the country, I would
have never been able to tell the difference - now in the city, you
can buy summer flowers in winter and eat the same vegetables
all the year round! Whereas, in the country, I could only eat things
at certain times of the year - for example strawberries in June and
turnips in winter. I lived my childhood with the seasons.
Also we made most of our food and would never eat frozen or
tinned food. Everything was fresh - so it must be better than the
type of food I am taking now in the city. City people may think
people in the country miss a lot of good things about modern life,
but in my opinion they miss a lot more than them - they miss real
life.

1. What is the main idea of the

passage?
A. Comparison between life on a farm
and that in the city.
B. Food in the country in comparison
to that in the city.
C. Seasons in the country.
D. The author's childhood.

A. similar
B. very different from one another
C. beautiful
D. different from those in the city
3. What can be inferred from the passage about the experience of
seasons in a year for the city people?
A. Seasons are similar

B. It may be difficult for them to

tell seasonal difference
C. They see different seasons
come and go
D. Food is similar in all four season
4. The word "them" in line 9 refers to _______________.
A. city people
B. four seasons
C. good things about modern life
D. people in the country

A. there are four seasons in the country where the author used
to live
