A Shepherd's View
This time of year we
enter into the Church's
second and
longest Season of
Ordinary Time. What a
fitting Gospel passage to hear. Jesus
calls us now to become witnesses
of what we have heard, and seen. The
challenge is for us to bring the Good
News to our families, our work places
and to allow people to hear from you
and see in you the great deeds of the
Lord. There is one thing that
prohibits this witnessing: FEAR. But
several times, in today's Gospel we
hear that Jesus tells us "to fear not";
"Don't be afraid." Surely, there are
times when we are unsure of our
ability to be the true witness Christ
calls us to be, but I assure you,
through prayer, coming to Mass, and
receiving the Lord in the Sacraments,
we will find His Strength,
Encouragement, and Love. As we all
begin to wind down for summertime
relaxation, be assured of the graces of
God, the love of Jesus, and the
empowering blessings of the Holy
Spirit. Thanks for being a witness of
Christ!!

This day commemorates the two preeminent June 29:

apostles of the early Church. Of the two, St. Peter Sts Peter and Paul, Apostles
was among the twelve disciples called by Jesus. (+AD64 AD 67)
Originally named Simon, Jesus gave him an Ara-
maic name, Cephas, meaning Rock . This in-
spired a memorable pun when Jesus told hi, You
are Cephas (Peter) and upon this rock I will build
my church The occasion was Jesus question to
the disciples: Who do you say I am? which
prompted Peters reply: You are the Christ. Pe-
ter emerges in the Gospels as a complex charac-
ter, bold, impetuous, capable of fear, doubt, and
childlike meekness; in short, a fully human crea-
ture. It was this Rock who denied Christ three
times after his arrest but who later repented his
betrayal and courageously assumed leadership of
the early Church.
St. Paul, a devout Jew, was initially a persecutor of
the Church. But after receiving a dazzling vision
of the Risen Lord, he was convinced that Jesus
was the Messiah. He went on to become a zeal-
ous missionary and servant of the Gospel. His
letters to the early Christian communities became
foundational documents for the early Church. By
providing a theological rationale for the
universality of the Gospel he was largely respon-
sible for extending the Church to the wider
Gentile world. He suffered persecution in many
forms and was eventually martyred in Rome,
where Peter, too suffered the same fate.
