Topic Focus: Narrative Writing.
Level of schooling: Year 2 and Year 3.

Year 3
Text structure and organisation
Understand how different types of texts vary in use of language choices, depending on their purpose and context(for
example, tense and types of sentences) (ACELA1478)

Use comprehension strategies to build literal and inferred meaning and begin to evaluate texts by drawing on a
growing knowledge of context, text structures and language features (ACELY1680)

Dispositions:
The teacher will create a learning environment which will engage, encourage and extend students in their thinking in
literacy.
The teacher will provide experiences which reflect the use of narrative texts.
The teacher will present learning experiences to students as a group, sitting on the floor and provide clear demonstrations
of the expectations for each experience. Students will be encouraged to participate in each experience and to be active in
their own learning. Learning experiences provided will allow for hands on investigation, which will allow students to
inquire, interpret and model their understanding.
The teacher will scaffold learners in their investigations and during their communications of understandings, which will
provoke students to think deeply about the use and writing of narrative texts.
Teachers will make connections between new learning and previous learning and encourage students to also make these
connections and apply them to new problems.
Teachers will ensure all students have opportunity to participate and that partner groups are positive for each student.
The teacher will ensure students are scaffolded where needed and activities are adjusted according to students needs.

Students will engage in a discussion about what they think a narrative is.
Students will offer examples of narratives texts.

Exploratory /Explore & Explain Learning Experiences:


Exploratory 1:
The teacher will explain what a narrative text is.
Draw a concept map on the board including:
Setting: where is it? Time period?
Characters
Complication/ problem.
Resolution.
Ending.
With the students construct a narrative through talking as a group.

Students will then write their own narrative, using these ideas or their own.

Students will share their narrative with the group.

Exploratory 2:
Students will use their knowledge of narratives to write their own narrative.
Using a writing prompt, students will develop a concept map of their story line.
Students will then write their narrative.
Students will edit their narrative, then publish it, using the computer.
Students will share their narrative with the group.
