For this web 2.

0 lesson I decided to use my wiki to create an informational writing piece

about Butterflies. Sherry Sanden and Janine Darragh (2011) explain, a wiki is a communally

generated website on which anyone is free to add, change, or delete content, sharing the

responsibility for its growth amongst all of its contributors (Mindel, 2006). To continue with my

previous Online Literacy Lesson on the Butterfly life cycle, I decided to use the same brainpopjr

video for the students to locate new information. For the wiki assignment, students will be able

to choose which graphic organizer they want to use to develop a writing piece about butterflies. I

will instruct students on how to communicate their findings and writing pieces on the wiki.

Depending on their skill level, students will be able to work independently, or collaboratively

with their peers or with me to complete a writing piece. Once a teacher sets up the site and

communicates expectations for its use, students can begin to add evidence of their own growing

understanding in interactive and collaborative ways Sanden and Darragh (2011). The wiki will

allow for students to work at their own pace and be creative with their work.

ISTE Standards

The ISTE standards used for my wiki lesson include 3.b. Locate, organize, analyze,

evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media, and 4.a.

Identify and define authentic problems and significant questions for investigation. My lesson

addresses 3.b because the students have to be able to locate the correct information using the

reliable source, brainpopjr. With viewing the butterfly video on brainpopjr, the students will have

to take the information gathered and organize it into a graphic organizer to turn it into a writing

piece. For standard 4.b, the students will have to figure out which graphic organizer they want to

use to complete the writing assignment. By first choosing the organizer, they will have to create

questions in which they will use to locate the information in the video. Donald J. Leu, J.
Gregory McVerry, W. Ian OByrne, Carita Kiili, Lisa Zawilinski, Heidi Everett-Cacopardo,

Clint Kennedy, and Elena Forzan suggest that a critical component of successful Internet

reading is the ability to read and locate information that meets ones needs (Eagleton, Guinee, &

Langlais, 2003; Guinee, Eagleton, & Hall, 2003).

ILA Standards

1.2 Candidates understand the historically shared knowledge of the profession and

changes over time in the perceptions of reading and writing development, processes, and

components.

4.1 Candidates recognize, understand, and value the forms of diversity that exist in

society and their importance in learning to read and write.

To enhance my students reading and writing ability, I decided to take this once paper-based

lesson and change it into a technology lesson. By transforming my lesson, I am able to reach the

diverse literacy needs of my students learning abilities. The International Reading Association

(2009) states the following: To become fully literate in todays world, students must become

proficient in the new literacies of 21st-century technologies. As a result, literacy educators have a

responsibility to effectively integrate these new technologies into the curriculum, preparing

students for the literacy future they deserve (p. 1) Sally Valentino Drew (2012). It is important to

my teaching to integrate as much knowledge in 21st Century skills to enhance the knowledge of

my students.

KYT Standards

Standard 6 The Teacher Demonstrates the Implementation of Technology

6.2 Uses available technology to implement instruction that facilitates student learning.

I found it appropriate to transfer my lesson into a technology based lesson to facilitate the

learnings of my students. With the wiki I am able to understand what my students know by

linking them to it so that I can see everyones responses according to the lesson. I can also

provide feedback in a timely manner by commenting on their work. Randall S. Davies (2011)

explains, The directive to integrate instructional technology into the teaching and learning

equation results from the following fundamental beliefs: (1) that learning is enhanced through

the use of technology and (2) that students need to develop technology skills in order to be

productive members of society (U.S. Department of Education, 2001).When students are

technology literate they become prepared to learn and grow in the future.

Common Core State Standards

W.K.2 Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/

explanatory text in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information

about the topic.

W.K.6 With guidance and support from adults, explore a variety of digital tools to produce and

publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.

W.K.8 With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather

information from provided sources to answer a question.

RI.K.10 Actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding.
My wiki includes the CCSS to merge the literacies together in order to help students

develop their reading. Drew (2012) suggest, The CCSS provide educators with a fresh

opportunity to prepare students for literacy demands of college and career. With the Internet as

the defining technology for literacy and learning in the 21st century (Leu et al., 2011), students

need to be prepared as skilled and strategic readers, writers, and communicators in online

environments. For this lesson, students will to participate in our group reading activity with

purpose and understanding to compose an informative/ explanatory text, with guidance and

support from adults and peers. Collaboratively and individually students will gather information

from a provided source to answer questions and create an informal writing piece to publish.

My wiki lesson allows for students to develop in their technology use. Being that many

students are introduced to technology prior to attending school, they are already more than

familiar with technology, they just arent technologically literate. It takes more than being able to

use a device or playing a game to be literate in technology. It takes understanding on how to use

technology to gain access to reliable information, to analyze and evaluate information, and then

to communicate information to be technologically literate. Constructing knowledge is a human

activity that can be facilitated by technology, but students must go beyond seeing technology as a

motivational or entertaining item and begin seeing the technology as a tool to accomplish

specific learning objectives Davies (2011).

My Wiki helps me to guide my students through the TPACK Technology Literacy levels.

My students will have more than an awareness of technology due to this lesson. They will be on

more of a praxis level because they will have guidance and support from me and be more

enthusiastic about working with the technology to develop their very own writing piece. Davies
(2011) explains, Learners are most likely to succeed at this level when they are provided with

expert guidance accompanied by practice involving simulated problem solving activities.

Students at this stage often move from novice use to enthusiastic use. Often at this stage the

quantity of use and the enthusiasm for the technology increase dramatically. I think my students

will be happy with developing their literacy with technology because they already love

technology and literacy.
