small and larger groups.
Standard - CC.1.2.1.I Identify basic similarities in and differences between two texts on
the same topic.

1.3 Anticipatory Set

Hello boys and girls, can anyone remind me about what we discussed yesterday during
reading? Good rocks and minerals, and what kind of book was this fiction or nonfiction?
What did we do with our nonfiction book yesterday.
Well today we are going to be reading another nonfiction text on the same topic, rocks
and minerals. While I read, and you follow along, I want you to think about, what is
similar to the book from yesterday and what is different including maybe some text
features from yesterday.
Then we are going to be writing our similarities and differences on this diagram, does
anyone remember what this is? (a venn diagram)

1.4 Procedures
Read: Learning about Rocks by Mari Schuh
Modeling: While I was reading I was thinking about some things that are similar and
different from the book that we read yesterday. I may have even noticed some text
features that were different or similar from yesterday.
One particular piece of information that I noticed was that the book that we read today
told us about how the earths crust is actually made of solid rock. When I look back
through our other book, I can see that it does not say that. So I am going to write it on a
post it and put it on my venn diagram under the side that says learning about rocks.
I also noticed something that the other book had that this book did not, it is actually one
of the text features that was on our paper yesterday, it is subheadings. The book today did
not have any but we know our other book did! I am going to write that on another post it
and put it under the side that is called Rocks and Minerals because that is the book we
read yesterday.
Now I was also thinking about some possible similarities. They both have something, that
you can find in the front and tells you where to locate information. They both have a table
of contents! So I am going to write that on another post it and put it in the middle section.
Guided Practice: Turn and talk with a friend about some other similarities and
differences you noticed in the book.
Now that you have had a chance to talk, can anyone think of some other aspects of this
book that are different from the one yesterday? (take responses)
What about aspects of the book yesterday that are different about todays book. (take
responses)
Finally, did you notice anything the same in both books?
What you are going to do now is you are going to write down an idea on a post it. I am
going assign you which part of the venn diagram you will write about. (Call students to
stand up and give them their assignment, they will also have both books.)
You will have about three or four minutes. When you are done, hang up your post it, and
take a seat on the carpet.
When they are done, read through the post its and discuss briefly if they are correct or
not.
Independent Practice: Now you will be getting out your writers journal, you are going
to write three sentences. One of the sentences will say: Learning about Rocks is different
from rocks and minerals because then give a reason (Read examples from post its)
Another sentence will say: Rocks and Minerals is different from Learning about Rocks
because and say something that was in Rocks and Minerals and not Learning about
Rocks. Your final sentence will say: Learning about Rocks and Rocks and Minerals are
similar because and give a reason.
When you are done writing you have one final duty. You are going to get a paper with
either igneous, metamorphic, or sedimentary on it. Then you will first draw one of the
rocks of that type that you see in one of the books on the paper in pencil, next you will
trace it in black pen and write the name of the specific rock underneath it, finally, you
will put the books back then get out your water color paints and paint the rocks with the
actual colors of the rock that you chose. It must be a real rock, you also must put back
your book before painting.
1.5 Differentiation
I will modify for the students more advanced in ELA by giving the option of not using
the sentence that I write on the board as their frame.
I will modify for the lower level students by giving them access to a sentence frame by
writing it on the board.
1.6 Closure
For the closure, I will encourage them to share what they wrote with eachother.

1.7 Formative and Summative Assessment

I will formatively assess the students through observation and questioning during their
guided and independent practice time.
I will summatively assess the students by checking what they wrote in their writers
journals.
