APPROVEDBYTHEARTSANDSCIENCESSENATEBSeptember2011

AmongthemissionsofStonyBrookUniversity,theresearchactivitiesofitstenuredfacultyoccupyaprimaryplace.
Theseresearchexpectationsarealsosituatedwithinthecontextoftheobligationsoftenuredandtenuretrack
facultyintheareasofteachingandservice.Thisdocumentaddressestheroleoftheresearchexpectationsofits
tenuredfacultyinthebroadercontextofteachingandservice.Althoughresearchprofilesmayvaryovertime,all
tenuredfacultymembersareexpectedtobeactiveinsomekindofresearchasdefinedbelow.Tenuredfaculty
shouldcontinuetobeactiveinsomelevelofallthree:research,teaching,andservice.

I.RESEARCHRESPONSIBILITIESOFSTONYBROOKTENUREDFACULTY

a. ByAresearch@ismeantawiderangeofscientific,scholarly,theoretical,andcreativeactivities
thatresultinthecreationoforiginal,groundbreaking,ornewcontributionstoknowledgeand
understanding.ResearchbyStonyBrookUniversityfacultyisdemonstratedthroughvarious
alternativeavenues:

conductingfederallyandprivatelyfundedorsponsoredresearchgrantandfellowship
projectsandoutcomes;
publishingauthored,coauthored,edited,orcoeditedbooks,bookchapters,articles,
editions,translations,orresearchreports;
engagingineditorialpublications(suchasjournaleditor,guesteditor,bookseries
editor,bookreviewseditor,bibliographies,etc);
deliveringinvitedandcontributedlecturesandconferencepapers,panels,andposters;
collaboratingoninternationalandnationalresearchandpublicationprojects;
producingartistic(theatre,music,art,cinema)performances,exhibitions,and
installations,exhibitcatalogues,andconferencebooks;
developingmedical,scientific,humanities,andartsresearchprojectswithpublic
outcomes;
organizing,coordinating,anddevelopinginternationalandnationalprofessional
conferencesandsocietiesthatenhance,generate,andproducenewknowledgeor
understandinginoneormorefieldsofresearch;
curating,designing,orcreatingexhibitsformuseums,galleries,theaters,filmarchives,
etc.
reporting,writing,producing,photographing,videographingoreditingworksof
journalismforprint,radio,television,online,ormobileplatforms.

b. Bothexternalandinternalfundingandsupportoftheseresearchactivitiesaswellastheir
outcomesarecrucialtotheoverallresearchendeavorsoftheuniversity,butothernonfunded
researchactivitiesarealsoessentialtothemissionoftheuniversity.

c. Theresearchactivitiesofthefacultyenhancethereputation,visibility,andprestigeofthe
universityinthebroaderacademic,intellectual,public,andservicecontexts.


II.TEACHINGRESPONSIBILITIESOFSTONYBROOKTENUREDFACULTY

a. Teachingandmentoringattheundergraduate,graduate,andpostdoctorallevelssupportnot
onlytheresearchmissionsoftheuniversitybutalsothebroadereducation,development,and
learningofitsstudents.

b. Theadvantagesofundergraduateandgraduateeducationinthecontextofaresearchuniversity
areevidenceofavaluableandimportantsymbioticrelationshipbetweenteachingandresearch.
Advantagesincludeexperienceparticipatinginresearchwithresearchersorobserving
researchersatwork,organizingcontextsforpresentationsandevaluationsofscholarlypapers,
texts,andexperiments,developmentofcriticalthinking,interpretation,andanalysis.

c. Theteachingcontributionsoftenuredandtenuretrackfacultyarecrucialtothevitalityofthe
universityandtheeffectivenessofthedegreesthatitconfersonitsgraduates.Teachingincludes
notonlyclassroom,laboratory,andofficehourcommitmentsbutalsomentoring,advising,
supporting,andrecommendingstudentsattheundergraduate,graduate,andpostdoctoral
levels.Asignificantportionofthisteachingfunctionmayincludesupervisinganddirecting
master=sthesesanddoctoraldissertations.

III.SERVICERESPONSIBILITIESOFSTONYBROOKTENUREDFACULTY

a. Researchandteachingfacultyarealsoexpectedtocontributeactivelytotheirprofessionand
theuniversityintermsofservice.

b. Professionalservicethatdrawsuponestablishedandrespectedexpertiseinafieldand
constitutesevidenceofimpactandscholarlyreputationincludes:

participatingingrantpanelsandevaluativereviewboards;
contributingaseditorialadvisoryboardmemberforjournalsandbookseries;
servingasanofficerormemberofanexecutivecommitteeforprofessionalsocieties;
chairingsessionsatprofessionalconferencesandassociations;
consultingonscientific,scholarly,orartisticprojects;
developingmethodsorstrategiesforimprovementofteachingorresearch;
designinganddevelopingwebsitesandonlinepresenceforprofessionalinformation,
evidenceofnewresearch,etc.;
advisingonthecreationofexhibitsformuseums,galleries,theaters,filmarchives,etc.;
providingadvisoryrolesingovernment,professional,andserviceagencies.

c. University,academic,andcommunityserviceincludesparticipationin:

governance(senate)committees;
departmental,interdepartmental,andprogramcommittees;

newprogramsorcurriculardevelopment;
universityadministration,departmentchair,andprogramdirector;
local,nationalandinternationalcommunityservice.

IV.RESPONSIBILITIESOFDEPARTMENTSANDINTERDISCIPLINARYPROGRAMSTOSTONYBROOKTENURED
FACULTY

a. Departmentsandinterdepartmentalprogramsareevaluatedandjudgedbytheireffectiveness,
productivity,andvisibilityintermsofresearch,teaching,andservice.

b. Atthesametimethatindividualfacultyareexpectedtofulfillthesemultiplefunctions,
departmentsandinterdepartmentalprogramsareexpectedtodemonstratesignificant
contributionintheareasofresearchactivity,teachingeffectiveness,andservicetothe
university.

c. Researchcommitmentsandobligationsoffacultyshouldbetakenintoaccountwhenassigning
teachingresponsibilitieswithindepartmentsandprograms.Additionalteachingobligations
shouldnotbeallocatedattheexpenseofresearchproductivity.

d. Departmentsandinterdepartmentalprogramsshouldrecognizethevalueofdifferential
contributionstoresearch,teaching,andservice.Eachfacultymembershouldthereforebe
encouragedtoplayasignificantroleintermsofthesethreeareasinadepartmental,
interdepartmental,orinterdisciplinaryarena.

V.RESPONSIBILITIESOFFACULTYFORTHEIRACADEMICPROGRAMS

a. Facultyhaveasharedresponsibilitytoensurethattheirdepartmentaland
interdisciplinaryprogramsmeettheireducationalandresearchobjectives.

b. Facultyindepartmentsandinterdisciplinaryprogramshaveasharedresponsibilityfor
theadministrationandexecutionoftheirprogramsintermsofresearch,academic
planning,programdevelopment,andtheteachingofstudents.

c. Unlikefacultyengagedinlongtermprojects,someindividualtenuredfacultymaynot
haveanyfurtherongoingresearchtrajectories.Althoughdepartmentsmayencouragethese
facultymemberstoreassesstheircommitmentssoastoincreasetheireffectivenessinnewor
differentresearchdirections,ortodeveloptheiractivecontributioninotherareasofuniversity
lifeandsupport(suchasthroughincreasedteaching,advising,ormentoringofstudentsand
juniorfaculty,orthroughadditionalprofessionalanduniversitygovernanceservice),noneof
thesealternativeexpectationsshouldbeunilaterallyrequiredoffacultyfromoutsidethefaculty
member=sdepartmentalorinterdisciplinaryprogram(s).

VI.RESPONSIBILITIESOFTHEUNIVERSITYTOSTONYBROOKTENUREDFACULTY

a. Sincetheuniversityhashighexpectationsintermsoftheresearchactivitiesofitsfaculty,the
universitycanbeexpectedtoprovidestructuralandtechnicalassistanceaswellas
encouragement,guidance,andadvicetoitsfacultyseekingtofulfillandenhancetheirresearch
expectations.

b. Theuniversitycanandshouldprovidementoringandsupportforseniorfacultywhomaybe
seekingalternativewaystomakecontributionstothelifeoftheuniversityintermsofteaching,
service,administration,ortrajectoryreassessmentinviewofnewresearchareas.Thesesupport
functionsmightincludedevelopmentofteamtaughtcourses,runningdepartmentalor
interdepartmentalcolloquiaorseminars,collaborativeorsupportiveworkalongwithhighly
activeresearchfaculty,seekingfellowshipsorgrantstodevelopalternativeornewresearchskills
orareas,etc.,writingtextbooksforclassroomuse,mentoringandworkingwithjuniorfacultyto
developtheircontributionstotheuniversity,etc.Nosingleorsetformulashouldbeappliedin
thesecases,butthrougheffectivecounselingandadviceandopeningupnewopportunitiesfor
suchfacultywhosemainresearchareaisnolongercentraltotheirwork,thedepartment,
program,andfacultyasawholeshouldseepositivebenefitsandasenseofvaluablecontribution
tothevariedactivitiesoftheuniversity.

c. Finally,theuniversity,itsvariousadministrativeunits,anditsfacultygovernancebodies
needtofindwaystorecognize,announce,andappreciatethemultiplecontributionsofits
facultyintermsofresearch,teaching,andservice.Announcementsofcurrentongoingresearch,
nationalandinternationalprofessionalactivities,serviceoneditorialandscientificadvisory
boards,participationinconferences,professionalsocieties,andofficesheld,notableteaching,
andongoingservicetotheuniversityneedtobeincreased.Newsletters,photogallerieswith
bios,announcementsonlineshouldbeincreasedsoastoencouragefacultytoenhancetheir
contributionsbutalsotorecognizetheimportantworktheydofortheuniversity.These
recognitionswillhelptobuildasenseofcommunitysuchthatallfacultyandstudentswillhave
accesstothecurrentresearchandvitalityoftheuniversity.Theserecognitionswillalsoserveas
modelsforotherfacultytoemulateandtoaspiretoaswell.

Appendix:DefinitionsandScopeofResearchbyResearchActiveFacultyatStonyBrookUniversity

1. WhatcountsasAResearchActiveFaculty?@Facultycontributionstoscientific,scholarly,theoreticaland
creativeresearchthatresultinthedevelopmentoforiginal,groundbreaking,ornewcontributionsto
knowledgeandunderstandingwillvaryaccordingtoarea.

2. Researchactivefacultymembersenhancethevisibility,reputation,andprestigeoftheuniversitythrough
publicdissemination,distribution,anddisplayoftheirwork.

3. TheprimarymandateoftenuredfacultyataresearchuniversitysuchasStonyBrookistoconductresearch
supplementedbyqualityteaching,professionalservice,andinstitutionalcommitmentthroughgovernance
anddepartmentalorinterdepartmentalprogramservice.

4. Researchactivityismultifacetedandvariedaccordingtothedisciplinaryandinterdisciplinaryareasinwhich
itisconducted.Evenwithinaparticulardepartmentorprogram,differentfacultywillconductvaluableand
importantresearchinmanydifferentwayswithvariousformsortypesofoutcomeandeffect.

5. Afullandthoroughdepartmentalselfstudyconductedonaregularbasiswithexternalexaminerswilloften
provideawayofbringingouttheextentandqualityofindividualandgroupfacultyresearch.Departmental
andprogramselfstudies(typicallyeverysevenyears)areavaluablewayforfacultytodemonstrate
collectivelyandindividuallytheirbestandmostsignificantongoingresearchcontributions.

6. Atnotimeshoulddepartments,programs,colleges,andschoolsbepermittedtolimitthedefinitionsof
AResearchactivity@toonlyoneoranotherformulation(suchasexternalfundingorparticipationina
doctoralprogram)asawayofaskingfacultytoincreasetheiralternativecontributionstotheuniversity.

7. Intensifiedteachingorservicecontributionsmaysignificantlyminimizetheabilityoftenureduniversity
researchfacultytocarryouttheirresearchmandates.Thiscouldhavetheeffectofreducingtheoverall
impactoftheresearchmandateoftheuniversityaltogether.

8. Intheabsenceofsignificantornotableresearchactivities(asdefinedhere),facultymaybeaskedto
increasetheiralternativecontributionstotheuniversity(butthesecontributionsmaytakeavarietyof
formsandtypesasdescribedinthisdocument,includingteaching,mentoring,professionalservice,
participationingovernance,academicprogramdevelopment,etc.).
