LESSON PLAN

Activity Name: A Visit to the Veterinarian

Approximate Length of Experience: 10 minutes

Age and Number of Children: Ten, four and a half to five-year-old Prekindergarten

students

Goal: To compare a visit to the vet to a visit to the pediatrician

Domain: Cognitive

Content: Facts include: What will happen when you take a cat or dog to the vet?

What equipment do you see in a vets office?

Vocabulary words include: Checkup, heartbeat, stethoscope, growth, teeth, ears,

eyes, stethoscope, tape measure, scale

Objectives: Participation in this activity will increase the childs ability to

1. Recall what they have experienced at the pediatricians office

2. Identify equipment used at the vet clinic and pediatricians office

3. Compare the differences and similarities between the veterinarian and the

pediatricians

Materials: Chart paper with a line down the middle and three different colored markers

Procedure: Gather the students at the carpet and tell them that Today we are going to

talk about pediatricians and veterinarians. Ask, Who knows what a pediatrician is?

(memory). If they are not able to answer tell them a pediatrician is a doctor for babies
and kids like them. Who has ever been to the pediatrician for a checkup ( memory) .

When they are done raising their hands ask them, Who knows what a veterinarian is?

(memory). If they are not able to answer tell them that a veterinarian is a doctor for

animals. Ask them, Who has ever taken their dog or cat to the veterinarian? (memory).

Tell them today we are going to make a list of what happens at the pediatricians office

and what happens at the vet clinic and see if they are the same or different. Use one

color of marker and write at the top of the chart paper Kid Doctor- Pediatrician. Ask

them, What happens when you go to the pediatrician? (memory) Write down their

answers on the chart paper. Ask them, What equipment does the pediatrician use?

(memory) Write down their answers on the chart paper. Now write Animal Doctor-

Veterinarian on the other half of the chart in a different colored marker. Ask them, What

happens when you go to the veterinarian? (memory) Write down their answers on the

chart paper. Ask them, What equipment does the veterinarian use? (memory) Write

down their answers on the chart paper. Now have them look at the two lists. Ask the

Who can come up here and circle words that are on both lists? (convergent) Who can

tell me the ways that they are the same? (convergent) Who can tell me the ways that

they are different?.

Simplication: Use simpler questions, use kid doctor instead of pediatrician and animal

doctor instead of veterinarian

Extension: Set up the dramatic play like a veterinarian clinic and encourage the

children to role play being a vet

Evaluation Method: Direct observation

What Next: Have a veterinarian come in to visit the class so the students can ask

questions and learn more and listen to their questions to figure out what they are

interested in and to extend the lesson even further

Evaluation of appropriateness of the category (type) of questions used: I used

narrow questions for this lesson plan, which is appropriate for the prekindergarten

students and their knowledge of veterinarians. According to the handouts, If you are

introducing a topic for the rst time, you will typically have a lot of memory and/or

convergent questions. Remember, you are laying the foundation for future learning in

this lesson. I asked questions to compare a visit to the vet to a visit at the pediatrician

because most students have visited the doctor while not everyone has been to the vet

and they can relate to the experience if they compare it to what they have been through.

Memory questions help them make these relatable connections.
