NIFT was established by Ministry of Textiles,Government of India, in
1968.

It was in Technical collaboration with FIT New York.

NIFT comes under top 10 institutes in India, infact NIFT- Delhi was
ranked number 1 according to India Today in 2016.

The head office of NIFT is also present in New Delhi.

It offers a variety of Regular as well as CE programmes. It has the


oldest and richest Resource Centre having rich collections of print
and non-print materials.

1. This institute is situated in the Hauz Khas institutional zone.
2. Acess is from north east and south west side of the campus.

1. Site is irregular in shape and
is surrounded by classical
dance institute, Hauz Khas
housing, Gulmohar park.

3. The building covers almost the entire site leaving very less green area.
4. Academic clusters have been grouped together to form units comprising class
rooms, labs, common lobby, and service spaces

5. Building is aligned with its long sides along NW and SE axis, facilitating good
exposure to the sun and breeze, at times causing glare.
6. Different blocks of building complex are placed according to the site lines.
7. All the peripheral building lines are parallel to the site lines.

9. Proper segregation of functions as building blocks are places in certain set of
zones which is determined by the function character of the building block.
10. The planning revolves around the two courts- the sunken cover with a stepped
kund and the amphitheatre.

11. Although apart from the zonal green there is not any substantial green area to be
landscaped, the institute gives a feeling of richly landscaped environment.

14. Different blocks acquire different shapes and forms depending upon the functions
they are accommodating.
15. The blocks have access from all the sides.
16. The building blocks are concentrated around the sunken court thus generating
activity and creating lively environment.

17. Library is used by all the students and outside people from the industry and
profession, for research and reference work.
18. Resource centre consists of valuable audio-visual collection of videotapes,
slides, CDs and photographs.
19. Resource centre also comprises of material collection of textile, costumes,
jewellery and other related reference material

CONCLUSION

1. A fashion institute needs not only workshops,new technologies,machines but
also creative and interactive spaces as it helps the students to explore
more.Thus both the campuses have the same idea of creating a relationship
between the built & the unbuilt spaces.
2. There are evidences of blend of traditional and contemporary architecture not a
single building is completely modern,natural light,ventilation and more open
spaces are encouraged in all the designs.
3. Aesthetics are cared for, sometimes at the stake of comfort if not function.
4. The site is well-segregated into various zones with respect to the functions.
5. Use of staircase is encouraged instead of lifts.
6. Courtyards and amphitheatres are focal point of the sites.sunk courtyard of NIFT
Delhi acts a break out space.
7. Landscaping is provided to create a richly landscaped environment.
8. Circulation spaces are minimised to obtain efficiency in design.

1. NIFT Mumbai campus was established in the year 1995 at Dadar, Mumbai and is
presently located at Kharghar, Navi Mumbai where it enjoys the privilege of open,
vast spaces and beautiful lush-green environment.
2. Kharghar is a node of the city of Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra.
3. It is a nature lovers' delight, with greenery everywhere, an apt location for a
design school like NIFT.

THE CAMPUS

1. The new campus of NIFT at Kharghar Navi Mumbai is spread across 20001 sq.
mts.
2. This campus is one of the largest out of the other 14 NIFT centers across India.
3. The campus has 4 pattern-making labs, 6 garment construction labs, 5 art-labs,
12 computer labs,1 textile weaving lab, faculty rooms, canteen, boys and girls
hostels, open-air recreational space, etc.

It is merely a composition of various forms which are arranged vertically or at


inclined angles.

Landscape courtyards are provided.
Space frames are provided at many places to form semi covered areas.
Open spaces remain informal in nature with multifunctioning possibilities
through which the institution gets a sense of place an the complex as a
community.
Framed structure is used in all the different departments and blocks.
Building has a combination of two materials - Concrete blocks for walls and a
lot of steel work, visible steel columns and roofing is present which adds on to
the aesthetics of the building as a whole.
