Objectives Learning Targets
Students will create a digital story using the information from their research.
Students will use information found from research to create an informational writing
piece.
Materials iPads or Computers

Procedures 1. Overview of the lessonUsing the research found and written on the class
wiki, you will be creating an informative digital story for others to read and
learn from
2. Tell students we will be putting all of our hard work into a digital story format
3. We will use pictures and information we found online to tell about their chosen
animal
4. Tell students that I will be modeling the steps of creating a digital story
5. Discuss the story map template
6. Using the story map template, I will use the information I found and recorded
on the wiki about African Elephants to complete the story map
7. Discuss the topic sentence, and write it in the correct space
8. Discuss the facts found, and write them in the correct spaces
9. Discuss the closing sentence, and write it in the correct space
10. Using the completed story map, I will then complete a story board template
11. I will use the same order I used with the story map, but add a title page
12. I will then locate and add corresponding pictures to each page
13. I will also write what will be said in the audio portion under the text
14. Now, I will use the story board to complete a digital story
15. I will add the photos in the same order as my story board
16. Then I will add the text to each photo
17. I will then add the audio to each page
18. I will save my work and upload it to Youtube.com
19. Answer any questions students may have
20. Now, students will return to their seat and be given an iPad to access the wiki
and Google doc they recorded their information on
21. Students will be given hard copy the story map template to complete
22. We will walk through it step by step, but students will write complete sentences
containing different facts for their particular animal
23. Students who have difficulty writing/reading, can draw a picture and with the
support of an adult, create a complete sentence to match
24. Additional days needed in order for students to continue in creating their
informational writing into a digital story with a gradual release of
responsibility.

Accommodations Non-readers will be able to draw a picture of the facts in the space provided on the
story map, then be assisted in adding text.
Students who are unable or struggle with reading and/or typing, will be able to use
voice typing under tools in Google Docs.
Assessment Formative: Student observations and conversations
Summative: Students completion of a digital story with the necessary components
