Syllabus

1. Welcome to Probability and Statistics

Welcome to Probability and Statistics. This is a one unit course that partially fulfills the
mathematics requirement for high school graduation. As your instructor for this semester, I hope
that we will be able to accomplish learning the subject matter together and that you will discover
further applications for the knowledge. This first quarter will be primarily statistics.

2. Preface
Why study probability and statistics? Mathematical and scientific reasoning can be helpful in
your daily life, making both personal choices and those affecting a business wherever rational
decision making is necessary. The knowledge of what has come before can help us in our
decision-making, and probability and statistics help us to evaluate past information from the
proper perspective.

3. Course Information
Course Title: Probability & Statistics CP

Prerequisites: Algebra II or equivalent

Description: Overview of statistics and probability including experimental design,

sampling, and calculation of probabilities including discrete and
compound.

Intended Audience: 10-12

4. Goals and Outcomes

Course Goals
The following course goals articulate the general objectives and purpose of this course. Students
will:

understand what statistics is

make a sample
collect data from a sample
be able to display, analyze, and average data
be able to find variation, position, and correlation of data

Course Outcomes
After completing this course, students will be able to:

demonstrate an understanding of the design of a statistical study

demonstrate an understanding of how to collect, organize, display, and interpret data.
demonstrate an understanding of basic statistical methods of analyzing data.
demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts of probability.

5. Grading
A grade will be assigned at the end of each quarter, and the two grades will be weighted
equally in determining the final course grade.

Course Assessments
Quizzes
You will complete each quiz online using Moodle. Each quiz will be considered open-book; you
may consult all online course materials, or even external Internet resources. You are also
encouraged to collaborate with your classmates currently, provided that you each submit your
own quiz. You will be allowed a maximum of 24 hours to complete each quiz, which must be
submitted before the deadlines posted in Moodle.

Discussions
You will be asked to create threads answering a question asked by the teacher. It is important to
answer the question thoughtfully, as the teacher is using your ability to respond as a way of
assessing your understanding of the course materials. You will also be asked to read and respond
to your classmates posts. Please respond in a polite and courteous manner. Deadlines for initial
posts and responses will be indicated in each module.

Exercises
Exercises will be practice assignments turned in to the teacher that will allow him to assess your
understanding and application of concepts. You will be asked to complete the exercises as a
separate document and upload them. Details about due dates and acceptable file type will be
discussed in the module.

6. Textbooks and Supplies

Required Texts
Larson and Farber, Elementary Statistics: Picturing the World 5/ed. (Prentice Hall, 2012)

Recommended Supplies
A Graphing calculator is recommended for use in this course, but there are also apps
online that will allow you to performs some of the functions we need as well.

7. Schedule

Module 1: What is Statistics?

Statistics is an important course, because after years of dealing with numbers, we will finally
look at what they actually mean. The variable x stood for something, and we are going to replace
x with many things, things that we care about. We will also look at what x means to us, because
if x doesnt mean something, why even bother.

Topics:
Types of Statistics
Describing data
Taking a closer look at data

8. Course Policies

Time Management
An online course can take a considerable amount of time. As stated in welcome page, each
module requires 6 9 hours for readings and assignments/assessments. For this reason, it is
highly recommended that you begin each assignment early. Work on it regularly over the week
rather than waiting until the last day or two. This will allow you to have the chance to work out
problems or get help if needed.

Participation
Depending on the class activities, you are responsible for completing weekly assignments,
participating in discussion groups, and checking in to the course site on a consistent basis.

Deadlines
You will always be given explicit instructions on where to send your assignments. Assignments
are usually due on a weekly basis the exact dates will always be found in the activities.
schedule.

Turnaround Time
The instructor will be monitoring the discussion board on a daily basis. Submitted assignments
will be graded and feedback will be provided within 3 days after the module is concluded. E-
mail messages will be answered within 24 hours on weekdays and 48 hours on weekends.

Academic Integrity
Under all circumstances, students are expected to be honest in their dealings with faculty,
administrative staff, and fellow students. In speaking and/or correspondence with members of the
college community, students must give an accurate representation of the facts at hand. Students
must submit work that fairly and accurately reflects their level of accomplishment. Any work
that is not a product of the students own effort is considered dishonest. Students may not submit
the same work for more than one course. A student may be suspended or expelled for academic
dishonesty. Please refer to the Student Handbook for additional information regarding the policy
on academic honesty.
