c Communication is as important to one daily as oxygen to the human body either

communicating among each other, for example a school of dolphin or ³Stephen Hawking´
conveys one thought through his specialized chair. Instruct, inform and influence are the three
basic yet essential function of communication. Furthermore, there are 5 method of
communication those are; written word, non-verbal, spoken word, visual image and multimedia.
Through this course, I am benefited immensely through improvement in my interpersonal skill at
the same time making a difference in my life.

Effective communication is one of the improvements I made. It is the ability to send

messages using the appropriate languages with a down to earth manner yet east to understand
that is concisely done. Understanding of this would greatly improve my interpersonal skill which
is essential to my personal life as well as in my future engineering profession. Barriers of
communication are one of the components of effective communication. Messages when
transmitted by the receiver can be distorted or misunderstood by the receiver due to the barriers
of communication. So, an awareness of these barriers would make a difference in my
interpersonal skill.

The clarity of the message transmitted, whether oral or written, depends on the sender¶s
choice of words as well as the structure of the sentences. People with different background
interpret the meaning of the words differently. As a result language is one of the barriers of
communication. Listening is also a barrier as if there is a feedback and the surrounding element
distract the sender¶s attention then the clarity of the return message is also affected. Further
examples of barriers are non-verbal signals, emotion, pre-judgement, relationships and systems.

Besides that, listening skill is equally as important as speaking skill. It is the ability of a
receiver to interpret and evaluate the sender¶s messages. Developing good listening skill would
benefit me as such skills are thought very highly by everyone. A person listening ability vary
accordingly due to the following factor these are; interest in the topic, importance of the
information, external distractions, personal problems as well as the length, complexity and the
delivery of the messages.

Another component that is beneficial is mind map; invented by psychologist Tony Buzan.
It represents and linked to a central idea or key word in a non-linear form.c Mind map can be
further develops branching out in a nerve like structure around and throughout the central idea.
At the end of this branch are idea related to central idea that is represented in short and simple
yet important keys points that is coloured. As a result of branching different idea can be
grouped.

Through this method, it is easier for me to generate idea by means of brains storming.
Furthermore, these coloured words and idea not only improve clarity by of the idea by
differentiating them from one another, it also enhances the person¶s memory crucial if
examination is just around the corner. During lecture session, it can also be used for note
making. Other use of mind map is summarizing information, consolidating information from
various source as well as breakdown complex problem.

Besides verbal communication, non-verbal signal is also another component of effective

communication and a method of communication. Furthermore, being able to read these signals is
the stepping stone of effective communication. Having the understanding to not only read non-
verbal but using it in everyday life would undoubtedly benefit me in various ways. As a matter of
fact, according to a research it is discovers that when a person communicate orally, only 7% of
communication is done through actual word while the remaining 93% are non-verbal. This
research clearly show that though unconsciously a receiver

Gesture of a person is an example of non-verbal. By incorporating these non-verbal¶s

during an oral presentation, it can give impact as in reinforcing the meaning of the messages.
Furthermore, such gesture not only allow make the message easily understood but at the same
time establish solid credibility. In addition to gesture, there are also hand signals that can be used
in daily activities. This type of non-verbal signal reflects the sender commitment and desire for
the messages to be taken seriously. A well-trained politician is able to not only show no wasted
gesture, at the same time incorporate specific gesture to paint a picture and convey the message
accurately.

When one uses body languages to the greatest effect, one is able to create rapport, which
is connecting with other people through a common interest. Similarly, it is the act of showing
other with great respect. Maintaining eye contact, the choice of words is one of the few ways to
establish rapport. As a result of a successful establishment of rapport, the result of any
conversation will satisfy both parties¶ need especially when come to negotiating. Similarly, it
also widens a person network of contact.

Besides incorporating non-verbal, reading these gestures is also beneficial. By closely

observing how people move as well as his or her non-verbal signs, one can get a glimpse of their
current state of mind as well as the emotions. Example is the intensity by the way a person stand.
Being able to read these non-verbal signs will give me the edge by forewarned and forearmed for
whatever is going to happen especially during an interview.

I am able to make a difference in my life by increasing the chance of a successful

interview in a job recruitment process and writing an appealing job application is the first step.
To establish a positive impression on the future employer, it is important that the job application
is to be persuasive and avoid long winded sentence at the same time go straight to the point.
Moreover, a job application letter should provide the future employer the gist about the
candidate. Finally, Curriculum Vitae should be enclosed with the letter. .

If a job application letter be written using persuasive language, then the CV serve an
informative purpose. A CV is the marketing tool in job recruitment and is give employer an idea
of who you are. In another, a CV should be organized, accurate as well as truthful. More
importantly, a CV highlight one personal attributed. Besides, it also highlights one personal
education and qualification. A goof CV arrange it qualification starting with the highest order.
Another example of good CV is to briefly describe his or her working experience, duty,
responsibilities.

When one successfully get an interview, is does not mean that you get the job but instead
the employer is keen to know more about you and wish to find out your whether your personality
is well suited to the company organization¶s culture. Preparation is important so one has to be
prepare that means conducting a thoroughly research of the company. Correspondingly, arrive 10
minutes earlier is not only to prepare yourself mentally but at the same time if you are late, then
the employer will have a negative impressions of you. Besides, dress appropriately and smartly
are another way one can create impressions. Finally, respond calmly and more importantly
truthfully.
By being aware of all component of communication, I am not only able to develop
various interpersonal skills at the same time make a difference in my life.
