DEPARTMENT OF @ ANTHROPOLOsy Call for Papers This year, the University of the Philippines Department of Anthropology marks the culmination of the 3-year celebration of its 100 years of existence with an international conference. This celebration began in 2014 in recognition of the centennial of Anthropology 1, the general anthropology course in the Uni- versity. The Department was subsequently established in 1917 with Professor Henry Otley Beyer as the founding Chair of one of Asia's first anthropology departments, The Conference aims to generate critical discussions that focus on institutional memories, historiog- raphy, and analyses of issues and concerns in research, teaching and practice of anthropology in the Philippines in the last 100 years. These issues include: racialized perspectives that dominated the prac- tice of the discipline in the country during the early part of the American colonialism; the enduring issues of Filipino identity and ethnicity; the polemics of the Tasaday controversy during the Martial Law era; the intense Filipino values debate of the 1970s to 80s; the landmark passing of the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act (IPRA) in the 1990s; and the clamor for a more engaged anthropology in the context of a changing development framework, and heightened human rights, public health, gender sensitivity and environmental awareness. The Conference also seeks to gather narratives of anthropological institutions — academic and re- search institutions, museums, cultural agencies, professional associations, private organizations — as well as reflect on the experiences of researchers, teachers and practitioners of anthropology who do work or have worked in the Philippines, to have broader understanding of the historical directions and legacies of Philippine anthropology in Philippine society and elsewhere. Students, researchers and practitioners in anthropology and related disciplines are invited to submit paper and panel proposals that cover any of the following themes: Theory, Practice, Pedagogy and Ethics in Philippine Anthropology Institutional Histories and Anthropological Traditions Ancestors of Philippine Anthropology Identity, Culture, Folklore and Heritage Anthropology and Philippine Society New Directions for Philippine Anthropology ‘SUBMISSION GUIDELINES FOR PAPER AND PANEL PROPOSALS For individual paper proposals, please send an abstract (max. 250 words), including three key words that encapsulate the content of the paper.
