ABSTRACT

Glycidyl Methacrylate (GMA) based acrylic copolymer has been synthesized by using N-butanol
as a solvent and Butyl Acrylate (BA) and Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) as other comonomers based
on solution polymerization technique. This acrylic copolymer has been blended with commercially
available epoxy resin. This novel hybrid system is studied by curing it with amine based curing
agents like polyamide and a polyether amine (Jeffamine-T403). The chemical structure, glass
transition temperature and UV stability are characterized by FT-IT, DSC and QUV. Also the coated
panels have been tested for coating film properties. FT-IR confirmed the presence of epoxide group
in acrylic copolymer and Tg of acrylic copolymer was found to be around 7C as inferred from
DSC.
Also, an another hybrid coating system based on non-isocyanate polyurethane was studied. Firstly
NIPU was prepared through a well known route by using propylene carbonate and ethylene
diamine taken in excess. This oligomer containing amine terminal groups are then reacted with
epoxy also taken in excess. Now this hybrid system containing epoxy terminal groups can be cured
with any hardners like amine,.....
