The Adventures
of J.R. Browne by Guy Crabb
In 1849, J. Ross Browne traveled
from San Francisco to San Luis
Obispo to establish post office
sites for California in its statehood
infancy. I last left you with Mr.
Browne sitting at a campsite with
three desperados, beginning
to realize that his hours were
numbered. He would surely
be killed by road agents Griff,
Jack, and most dangerous of all,
the Colonel, sitting around the
campfire with Browne. Then
Griff quietly told him not to try to
escape, and offered to assist with
his getaway in the dark of night.
As the moon rose in the evening
sky, Griff signaled Browne to
follow him into the bush. Griff
quickly gave Browne his saddle,
mule, and other belongings and
told him to get to San Miguel as
fast as he could, where he would
probably be safe. Browne asked
if Griff would come with him and
escape the other two men while
the time was right. Griff said,
No, sir, I cannot turn traitor.
It is no use--I am gone beyond
redemption. Their fate must be
mine. God pity me! All I ask of
you is not to judge me harshly.
Good-bye. Browne said good-
bye and was off in the night in
the direction of San Miguel. His
thoughts were with the man who
saved his life and what his fate
would be.

Brownes top speed was a slow
trot on his mule and he rode all
night and into the next day. The
land was lonesome and desolate,
but his thoughts continued to go
back to the bad guys and how
he narrowly escaped death. All
of these thoughts made Browne
forget about how hungry and
thirsty he was and how desperate
he was to reach San Miguel and
the mission where he might find
safety. Still about 5 miles from
San Miguel, Browne suddenly
heard the thunder of hooves and
he knew it was the Colonel in
pursuit. In the distance, Browne
saw a small adobe home and he
headed for it. The mule became
terrified, and ran away once again.
This time, Browne had been smart
enough to keep his government
papers and pistol on his person
instead of on the mule, which was
now nowhere to be found.
As soon as Browne made it into
the home, the desperados were in
front on their horses. Blast the
fellow! What did he come here
for? Browne recognized the
voice of the Colonel. You may
as well come out at once. There
is no one here to stand by you, as
there was last night. Your friend
is keeping camp with a bullet
through his head and a gash in
his throat. As Browne cowered
inside the adobe in total terror,
he suddenly realized that one of
the bad guys was trying to come
in through the small window.
Browne aimed his pistol and shot
in the direction of the figure.
Hold on, Jack. The infernal fool
has shot me through the shoulder

quickly decided to make a bold
move. He threw the front door
open and made a break to get
away while Jack was dragging the

CHILL, DUDE!
Over the course of the years,
theres been a lot of chilling going
on.
The word chill came from the Old
English word ciele, which meant
cold, coolness, frost, or to freeze.
Cieles source was the Proto-Indo-
European root gel-, which gave
birth to heaps of modern English
words.
Given what some liquids do when
they cool down, its not much
of a stretch to see how a word
meaning to freeze could be the
parent of gel, gelatin and Jello.
Gelatin, meaning a clear, jelly-like
substance, appeared in 1713 after
spending a couple of centuries
in France as glatine. Gel, an
abbreviated form of gelatin,
showed up in English in 1899,
meaning a semi-solid substance.
Jellys parent-word also spent
some time in France (as gelee)
before moving across the channel
to, well, jell into the word we
know. And in 1900, the Genesee
Pure Food Company started
selling a product called Jello.
A Latin step-child of gel- also
made its way to England (through
France) in 1650 as glacial. And by
1744, the noun glacier was born.
And what happened to gel- on
its way through German and Old
English? It became both cool and
cold.
Because water expands upon
freezing, gel- is the parent-word
for gelb-, to swell. And because a
