SUMMER EXHIBITIONS
Hidden Gems: Selections from the Permanent Collection
July 7 to August 27
Rarely seen but always honored, the San Luis Obispo
Museum of Art is exhibiting Hidden Gems: Selections
from the Permanent Collection from July 7 to August
27, 2017. This exhibition offers a glimpse of the
California Central Coasts visual history and unique
identity.
Curator Ruta Saliklis selected the paintings, prints,
drawings, sculptures, photographs, and ceramics for
display in Hidden Gems. Saliklis included favorites
such as George Gibsons Sparkling Ranch, Phil
Dikes Vista Del Mar, Nancy Kolliners Red Cow, John
Barnards Old Man, and Robert Reynolds Going
Home.
The artwork in the San Luis Obispo Museum of
Arts permanent collection has been acquired since
the 1960s. Longtime volunteer curator Arne Nybak
championed the cause of the permanent collection
until the 1990s, and it continues to grow today thanks
to generous donations from collectors, estates, artists,
Robert Chapman, Broken Wing (detail)
and purchased acquisitions.
Related programming includes an Art at High Noon talk with SLOMA curator Ruta Saliklis on Thursday, August 3 at 12 PM.
Entry is free and open to the public. Bring your lunch! u
Sharon: Photographs by Leon Borensztein
July 7 to August 27
Leon Borensztein is a brilliant photographer whose work captures the integral
beauty in otherwise painful and challenging situations. The San Luis Obispo
Museum of Art is honored to present Sharon: Photographs by Leon Borensztein
from July 7 to August 27, 2017. The exhibition features photographs taken
throughout the life of his disabled daughter, with work spanning over thirty years.
The photographs highlight the harsh realities and beautiful nuances of caring for
those with disabilities.
Borenszteins work speaks to the importance of giving voice to the otherwise
unheard and unseen. His body of work serves as a timely reminder of the delicate
beauty that exists in suffering and in difficult relationships.
Internationally acclaimed photographer Leon Borensztein was born in Poland in
1947. He received a MFA with honors from the San Francisco Art Institute and
additionally received the Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship in 1987. His work
focuses on psychological and documentary portraiture, and is included in the
collections of the Biblioteque Nationale Paris, Museum of Fine Arts Houston,
San Francisco MOMA, Chicago Art Institute, and Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of
Photography, among other institutions. Borensztein has lived in California for 40

years, and currently resides in Oakland. He is a Visiting Faculty Member at the San
Francisco Art Institute, teaching photography.
On Thursday, July 6 at 12 PM, SLOMA welcomes Mr. Borensztein for an Art at High Noon lecture about Sharon. Admission is
free and open to the public. u
An opening reception for Sharon and Hidden Gems will be held on Friday, July 7 at Art After Dark.

Stay tuned date to be announced!
Chagall: Fantasies for the Stage at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) highlights
the principal role that music and dance played in Marc Chagalls artistic practice. The performing

created murals and theatrical productions for the Moscow State Jewish Theater in the 1920s, and
designed costumes and monumental sets for ballet and opera in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s.
The exhibition features the artists vibrant costumes and set designssome of which have never
been exhibited since they appeared on stageand also presents a selection of iconic paintings
depicting musicians and lyrical scenes and footage of original performances.
