Lab Report Assignment #1

Rates of a Chemical Reaction
Due Wednesday, 15 October 2008

We have learned to recognize a chemical reaction. Some signs of a chemical

reaction include:
? Heat is produced
? A colour change is produced
? Gas is produced
? A new product is created.

We also learned that a chemical reaction is caused by the collision of molecules

AND the rate of the reaction (i.e., the number of collisions) can be increased or
decreased. That is, more collisions produce a faster reaction (i.e., the rate of the
reaction increased).

We discussed four factors that impact the rate of the reaction:

? Heat increases the rate, while cold decreases the rate
? If more reactant is added, the reaction will occur faster
? If there is more surface area on the reactants, the reaction is faster
? If a catalyst is added, the rate of the reaction should increase.

We can test the Collision Theory with a simple experiment.we will mix water
(H2O) and Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3commonly known as Baking Soda
and sold over the counter as Alka Seltzer). The reaction should produce the gas
Carbon dioxide (CO2 ).

Materials
? 5 mL of water
? 10-20 tablets of NaHCO3
? One 45 mm film canister and lid
? One stop watch

Methods
? Add 5 mL H2O to the film canister
? As per the following table, add NaHCO3 to the canister and quickly
seal the lid
? Record the time it takes for the lid to pop off
