PART B (3 X 16 = 48) ANSWER ALL THE QUESTION

11. Estimate the main dimensions including winding conductor area of a 3-phase, delta to star core type
transformer rated at 300KVA, 6600/440 V, 50 Hz. A suitable core with three steps having a
circumscribing circle of 0.2 m diameter and a leg spacing of 0.4 m is available. = 2. A/mm2, E.M.F.
per turn = 8.5 V, Kw = 0.28, Sf = 0.9 (space factor). .(16)
12. A 250 KVA, 6600/400 V, 3-phase core type transformer has a total loss of 4800W on full load. The
transformer tank is 1.25mm in height and 1 X 0.5 in plan. Design a suitable scheme for cooling tubes if
the average temperature rise is to be 35 deg. The diameter of the tube is 50 mm and is spaced 75mm
from each other. The average height of the tube is 1.05m.(16)
13. Estimate the main dimensions, air-gap length, stator slots, stator turns/phase and cross-sectional area of
the stator and rotor conductors for a 3-phase, 15 HP, 400V, 6-pole, 50 Hz, 975 rpm, induction motor.
The motor is suitable for star delta starting. Bav = 0.45 Wb/m2, L = 0.8 , p.f.= 0.8 , efficiency = 0.9, ac
= 20,000 amp.cond./metre. .(16)

11. Derive output equation of a three phase induction motor and point out salient features of this
equation.(16)
12. Compute the main dimensions of the core of a 5 KVA, 11000/400 volts, 50Hz single phase core type
transformer. Window space factor = 0.2; The height of the window is 3 times its width; Current density
= 1.4 A/mm2; Bmax = 1.0 Tesla; Stacking factor = 0.9; Net conductor area in the window = 0.6 times
the net cross sectional area of iron in the core. Assume square cross-section for the core. .(16)
13. Derive output equation of a single phase transformer and point out salient features of this equation.(16)
14. Design the suitable number of cooling tubes necessary for a 3 phase transformer having the following
particulars: KVA rating = 1250, tank dimensions = 0.65 1.55 1.85 m, full load loss = 13.1 kW, loss
dissipation due to radiations = 6 W/m2-C, loss dissipation due to convection = 6.5 W/m2-C ,
improvement in convection due to provision of tubes = 40%, temperature rise = 40C, length of each
tube = 1 m, diameter of tube = 50 mm. Neglect the top and bottom surface of the tank as regards the
