Letsstartthissectionoffwithaquickdiscussiononwhatvectorsareusedfor.Vectorsareusedtorepresent
quantitiesthathavebothamagnitudeandadirection.Goodexamplesofquantitiesthatcanberepresented
byvectorsareforceandvelocity.Bothofthesehaveadirectionandamagnitude.
Letsconsiderforceforasecond.Aforceofsay5Newtonsthatisappliedinaparticulardirectioncanbe
appliedatanypointinspace.Inotherwords,thepointwhereweapplytheforcedoesnotchangetheforce
itself.Forcesareindependentofthepointofapplication.Todefineaforceallweneedtoknowisthe
magnitudeoftheforceandthedirectionthattheforceisappliedin.
Thesameideaholdsmoregenerallywithvectors.Vectorsonlyimpartmagnitudeanddirection.Theydont
impartanyinformationaboutwherethequantityisapplied.Thisisanimportantideatoalwaysrememberin
thestudyofvectors.
Inagraphicalsensevectorsarerepresentedbydirectedlinesegments.Thelengthofthelinesegmentisthe
magnitudeofthevectorandthedirectionofthelinesegmentisthedirectionofthevector.However,
becausevectorsdontimpartanyinformationaboutwherethequantityisappliedanydirectedlinesegment
withthesamelengthanddirectionwillrepresentthesamevector.
