Instructions to Candidates:
Candidates must answer ALL FOUR questions.
Show your method of calculations in support of any answer.

Question 1

The reinforced concrete beam shown in Figure 1 forms part of the structure of
a proposed school.

At critical locations, determine:

a) The principal longitudinal reinforcement.
b) Shear link reinforcement.
[Calculations for VRd,c and VRd,max are not required.]
[It may be assumed that Cot = 2.5.]

The beam is located inside the building; it is not exposed to the weather.

Include the self-weight of the beam.

DESIGN DATA

Loadings

Loads applied by each of the columns are:

Characteristic permanent load = 300kN
Characteristic variable load = 30kN
Reinforced concrete weighs 25kN/m3

Materials
Concrete: Grade C35/45
Reinforcement: Longitudinal bars and links high tensile H bars

Question 2

The steel beam shown in figure 2 forms part of a new industrial complex.
The beam is fully laterally restrained by the steel plate floor.

Design the beam for:

a) Bending
b) Shear
c) Lateral restraint force

DESIGN DATA
Loadings
Steel plate floor
Characteristic dead load = 20kN/m
Characteristic imposed load = 10kN/m

Steel stanchion
Characteristic dead load = 300kN
Characteristic imposed load = 60kN

Variable actions
Characteristic imposed load = 5kN/m2

Materials

Question 3

Details of a bolted joint to be made in a tension chord of a substantial steel

frame are shown in figure 3.

The member is a 254 x 254 x 89 universal column section and at the joint it is
connected with flange plates.

Using M20 steel bolts, design a suitable flange plate detail.

Determine: a) the number of bolts required

b) the bolt layout, including spacing checks
c) the plate dimensions including the thickness
d) plate bearing checks.

The weld design is not required

DESIGN DATA

Loadings
The total design value of the tension force P = 1400kN

Materials
Universal column and flange plates: Grade S275
yield strength = 275N/mm2
Ultimate tensile strength = 430N/mm2

Bolts: M20 grade 8.8

complex are shown in figure 4.

The supporting walls comprise:

215 load bearing leaf: 50 cavity: 103 external leaf

The slab may be assumed to be carried on the centre-line of the load bearing
leaf.

Determine the normalised compressive strength required for the 215 thick
load bearing skin.

DESIGN DATA
Loadings
Characteristic dead loads:
Reinforced concrete = 25kN/m3
Screed = 24kN/m3
Brickwork = 20kN/m3
Characteristic imposed loads:
Eurocode 1: Table 6.1: Category C5 = 5kN/m2
Materials
