ACUSON CONFIDENTIAL Introduction

1.0 Introduction
The MSM User Guide is designed to help the CE navigate the Manufacturing, Ser-
vice, and Marketing (MSM) software interface.
This guide defines navigation and descriptive elements of the interface, and pro-
vides information on Access and Security Levels, Configuration Management,
Operational Procedures, Hardware Diagnostics and Error Management, with refer-
ence tables, and reference documents to aid in troubleshooting.
The User Guide addresses two software levels which are currently in the field. If a
function is unique to a particular system software level, it is noted in parentheses.
Action commands such as PRIOR, OK, CANCEL, DELETE, have different locations
depending on the software level. They may reside in either the main MSM window
or the softkey window. Also, informational screens are dismissed using the OK
r y
softkey in software revision 5.0 and greater.

Configuration Management ACUSON CONFIDENTIAL

4.0 Configuration Management

The system architecture is designed to electronically manage the hardware and
software configuration. The system automatically maintains its configuration,
using information stored on the boards, BBRAM, and hard drive.

NOTE: Do not replace the RDP and HD, or the PIC and HD, at the same time. If this is done, it
may require Acuson HelpDesk support.

4.1 Boards
Printed Circuit Assemblies (PCAs or boards) in the chassis maintain their own
y
configuration information in EEPROMs. Although most of this information is read
r
a
electronically, some items (i.e., Monitor, Main PS, PPS, etc.) require manual entry

4.2 Battery Backed RAMD(BBRAM)
The BBRAM contains machine-specific boot and configuration information, and
files created by Power Up Tests, Harmony, and other applications or utilities. It is
split into two locations, BBRAM0 and BBRAM1.

BBRAM0

BBRAM0 contains system configuration data, which is set initially by the Sequoia
configuration application. If there is a configuration inconsistency, resetting
BBRAM0 forces the configuration to restore default settings. Then, RESTORE SYSTEM
DATA from MO must be used to reinstall the correct configuration database.

Hard Drive Files ACUSON CONFIDENTIAL

4.3 Hard Drive Files

Basic system configuration is set by Manufacturing when the system is built. The
following system elements are set according to the system type purchased.

RDP BBRAM - system information (system type, video modes, etc.).

PIC EEPROM - system serial number, board configuration, and software

Hard Drive - maintains several files to manage the overall configuration (system
hardware configuration file, system serial number, files to update board software
and the feature control database)

A new configuration database is initialized, hardware is queried for board con-

figuration, and changes to the configuration database are loaded to the hard
drive.

BBRAM values are read and stored in the configuration database.

The revision of boot code on each board is compared to a hard drive file defined
by the software loaded during installation. Any board with a revision of boot
code differing from that on the hard drive is updated with the new revision.

The revision of boot code on each board is compared to the files on the hard
drive. Any board with a lower revision of boot code than that on the hard
drive is updated with the new revision.

NOTE: Do not replace the hard drive and PIC board at the same time.
When the hard drive is replaced, a software installation must be done before booting to
SUI or Imaging. Auto Configuration follows the rules of software installation. If the hard
drive and PIC are replaced at the same time, the HelpDesk must restore the system
through a remote connection.

File Restore

When configuration files are restored, the following events also occur:

The new database on the MO is verified for correct format and the systems ability
to parse it. If this step fails, the restore is aborted.

Hardware is queried for board configuration and loaded into the configuration
database on the hard drive. BBRAM values are read and stored into the
configuration database.

The system initializes to a default configuration when a software upgrade is per-
formed, and the new option or feature must be added to the database. This can be
done in two ways:

Restoring a feature control database from a Feature Control MO. The MO is built
by manufacturing per the customer order, and is supplied as part of an option
upgrade.

Manually entering a Key in the Feature Control Tool at the User level.

NOTE: It is extremely important to maintain backups of the System data file. A backup contains
the feature control set installed on the system. Backups must be updated each time
changes are made to the feature control set. If a system problem occurs and the data-
base is lost, it can be restored from the backups to enable purchased features.

ACUSON CONFIDENTIAL Operational Procedures

5.0 Operational Procedures

5.1 FRU Configuration

FRU Replacement

Before commencing service, it is advisable to set the system in ADMINISTRATION >

ENABLE SYSTEM SERVICE mode before replacing and verifying boards. This allows
the system to boot directly to the Service level in the SERVICE MAINTENANCE TOOLS
when booting with MULTIHZ + S.
After a board FRU replacement, Auto Configuration is invoked by the system, i.e.,
when there is a mismatch between the board EEPROM and the hard drive, or a
ry
covers off event has occurred. This writes the correct boot code to the EEPROM
a
ir et
from the hard drive file, and writes the new board revision, serial number and, if
applicable, the part number from the board EEPROM, to the hard drive file. This
r op ate
file must be verified after board replacement to ensure the new data was accepted.

6.3 Board Tests

Board tests are suites that allow tests to be run on individual boards to provide
maximum test coverage. The LOOP facility is useful for exercising a particular
board in the event of intermittent failures. LOOP can be left on for a long period, for
example, overnight, and the results can be seen in the Hardware Diagnostics Sum-
mary log and HARDWARE DIAGNOSTICS DETAIL log screens. See System Logs on page
38.

ACUSON CONFIDENTIAL Log Management

7.0 Log Management

7.1 System Logs

System logs are historical records that aid in troubleshooting. Logs are saved auto-
matically to the hard drive whenever certain events occur. Some logs record strings
of events as they occur for a specific period (e.g., the Installation Log), and others
record the last sequence (e.g., the Boot Log). All but the PUT log can be saved to
MO for analysis in Mountain View.
Logs are accessed via the VIEW LOGS icon at the SERVICE MAINTENANCE level.

Processor Mapping ACUSON CONFIDENTIAL

7.4 Processor Mapping

Error messages are grouped in terms of which processor logged the error, as
described above. The processor name in the error message may give a place to start
trying to tie in hardware to the failure. However, error messages can be cumula-
tive, or the result of a domino effect. Therefore, the root cause of an error may be
in a different area or on different hardware than the processor that logged the error.
Most error messages come from the following processors:

7.5 Power Up Tests (PUT)

If a failure occurs during power-up, the monitor displays a message. Write down
the message in case the system does not reboot properly and a call to HelpDesk is
required. HelpDesk will need the message in order to address the problem. As an
alternative, a message can be retrieved by reviewing the Power Up Test Log under
the VIEW LOGS icon. Times listed are Greenwich Mean Time, not local time..
