1.0 Introduction
The MSM User Guide is designed to help the CE navigate the Manufacturing, Ser-
vice, and Marketing (MSM) software interface.
This guide defines navigation and descriptive elements of the interface, and pro-
vides information on Access and Security Levels, Configuration Management,
Operational Procedures, Hardware Diagnostics and Error Management, with refer-
ence tables, and reference documents to aid in troubleshooting.
The User Guide addresses two software levels which are currently in the field. If a
function is unique to a particular system software level, it is noted in parentheses.
Action commands such as PRIOR, OK, CANCEL, DELETE, have different locations
depending on the software level. They may reside in either the main MSM window
or the softkey window. Also, informational screens are dismissed using the OK
r y
softkey in software revision 5.0 and greater.

MSM is organized into levels, with progressively more functionality at each level.

The User level provides access to the functions depicted in Figure 1 on page 6.
The Service level requires a personal access code and daily password. This level pro-
vides access to:
User Maintenance functions
Plus the following:
View Logs - access to the log files maintained on the hard drive
Hardware Diagnostics - access to the Diagnostics suites and system functions

The hierarchy is from User to Service.

Read Voltages
Harmony status information: AC line voltages, DC power supplies, temperature,
fan voltages, and PIC fuse status.
Read Power Supply Noise
Information on noise levels measured on the power supplies.
Read System Uptime and Thermal History
Power cycling and thermal problem statistics. Records activity during IMAGING
only, not during MSM.

USER Format MO
MO is formatted for backups and logs available in MSM. Also available in FAS Back-
ups.
NOTE: This format is not compatible with AEGIS MO disks.
Installation MO Verify (information only -- for use by the Customer Engineer)
Used to determine the checksum of the MO disk files. This value is compared to the
checksum value on the MO disk label.
NOTE: For a system at software version 3.16, MO Verify can be used only with a
3.16 installation MO.
For a system at Sequoia 5.0, MO Verify can be used with an MO at 4.0 or higher.
System Data (information only -- for use by the Customer Engineer)
Backs up to MO in one file the following subset files: Store/Recall (5.0 Exam Pre-
sets), Calc Data, Programmable Annotation, Auto Doppler, Keystroke Log, System
Configuration, or Feature Control. This is the preferred backup for software
upgrades.

Copies store/recall files from a source to a destination. The source may be either
the User programs or Acuson programs installed on a system, or an MO with
previously stored store/recall files. The destination may be either a backup MO
or, if sourcing from a backup MO, the system (called User in the window).
NOTE: The source and destination systems must be the same type and revision
level.

4.1 Boards
Printed Circuit Assemblies (PCAs or boards) in the chassis maintain their own
y
configuration information in EEPROMs. Although most of this information is read
r
a
electronically, some items (i.e., Monitor, Main PS, PPS, etc.) require manual entry
ir et
or updating from MSM. The EEPROMs contain the following:
Board-specific software - o

A c o t

4.2 Battery Backed RAMD(BBRAM)
The BBRAM contains machine-specific boot and configuration information, and
files created by Power Up Tests, Harmony, and other applications or utilities. It is
split into two locations, BBRAM0 and BBRAM1.
BBRAM0
BBRAM0 contains system configuration data, which is set initially by the Sequoia
configuration application. If there is a configuration inconsistency, resetting
BBRAM0 forces the configuration to restore default settings. Then, RESTORE SYSTEM
DATA from MO must be used to reinstall the correct configuration database.

updates the software
The revision of boot code on each board is compared to a hard drive file defined
by the software loaded during installation. Any board with a revision of boot
code differing from that on the hard drive is updated with the new revision.
HD Drive
The revision of boot code on each board is compared to the files on the hard
drive. Any board with a lower revision of boot code than that on the hard
drive is updated with the new revision.
NOTE: Do not replace the hard drive and PIC board at the same time.
When the hard drive is replaced, a software installation must be done before booting to
SUI or Imaging. Auto Configuration follows the rules of software installation. If the hard
drive and PIC are replaced at the same time, the HelpDesk must restore the system
through a remote connection.
File Restore
When configuration files are restored, the following events also occur:
The new database on the MO is verified for correct format and the systems ability
to parse it. If this step fails, the restore is aborted.
Hardware is queried for board configuration and loaded into the configuration
database on the hard drive. BBRAM values are read and stored into the
configuration database.
The revision of boot code on each board is compared to the hard drive file. Any
board with a lower revision of boot code is updated with the new revision.

already built into the software
as Native Harmonics, orDthe transducers enabled with an imaging function, such as
512 with CARDIO option.
The system initializes to a default configuration when a software upgrade is per-
formed, and the new option or feature must be added to the database. This can be
done in two ways:
Restoring a feature control database from a Feature Control MO. The MO is built
by manufacturing per the customer order, and is supplied as part of an option
upgrade.
Manually entering a Key in the Feature Control Tool at the User level.
NOTE: It is extremely important to maintain backups of the System data file. A backup contains
the feature control set installed on the system. Backups must be updated each time
changes are made to the feature control set. If a system problem occurs and the data-
base is lost, it can be restored from the backups to enable purchased features.
