Blood and its Components
There are 4 major components of blood:
1. ________________________________ 2. ________________________________

Plasma makes up _____% of blood. Red blood cells make up _____% of blood.
Plasma is the __________ part of blood. These cells carry __________ throughout

Red blood cells have no __________ and
are very __________.

White blood cells make up less than 1% of Platelets makes up a very small percentage
blood. of bloods composition.
These cells serve as your bodys They are __________ structures in blood.
__________ and fight ____________. They help blood to __________.
There are many __________ types of white Platelets are necessary in the __________
blood cells that fight different viruses, process and make up the main portion of
bacteria, etc. __________.
White blood cells are __________ than red
blood cells.

Blood and Clinical Laboratory Scientists:

Clinical laboratory scientists frequently analyze blood samples. The components of blood
can provide a great deal of information about a hospital patients health, and can provide
valuable information about treatment options. Plasma, while typically more of a chemistry
focus, can be tested for contamination. When viewed by clinical laboratory scientists, red
blood cells are checked for their size, shape, and color. Irregularities in these qualities may suggest that
oxygen circulation is irregular or that an individual is anemic. White blood cells are also checked for
their size and shape. Unlike red blood cells, the number of nuclei in a white blood cell is also
identified. The number of white blood cells in a blood sample can suggest that a person is unable to
fight infection, that they are currently fighting an infection, or that they have another serious health
concern, like an autoimmune disease. Platelets are checked for their size and quantity.
Blood and Hematologists:
Hematologists are individuals who specialize in the study of blood. These scientists
frequently see patients with bleeding and clotting disorders. A person who bleeds too
much can lack important proteins and/or enough platelets to heal a wound. A patient
that clots too much can have too many proteins or platelets in their blood supply.
