1 Sakhalin V CGS and GBS
Client: CJSC Elvary Neftegaz (ENG),
CJSC Vostok-Shmidt Neftegaz (VSNG) and
CJSC Zapad-Shmidt Neftegaz (ZSNG)
Arup was commissioned to complete a concept study and
development of concrete, steel and hybrid GBS schemes for
the Sakhalin V oil field in Far East Russia. The schemes were
developed considering both oil storage in the base caisson
and no storage. The platforms were designed to resist
seismic, wave and ice loads following international design
codes and recommendations.

The concept design of the platforms also considered

construction and installation costs, execution scheduling
and evaluation of heat transfer between the oil storage
compartment and the surrounding seawater.

2 Further to the concept design, sensitivity analyses were

completed on the developed schemes on the water depth
and seismic and ice loads for each platform.

Arctic GBS
Client: INTEC Engineering
Arup was commissioned to complete a concept level study
of a GBS gas drilling platform off the northwest coast of
Alaska. The concept level study considered wave and ice
loads to complete foundation and structural design of the
CGS. Three different concept designs were considered with
varying condensate storage capacities.

The concept study also considered cost estimates and

execution planning for each of the three schemes. Naval
architecture was considered as a part of the development of
3 the GBS concept design and was appropriately considered in
the cost and execution work.

Arctic LNG
Client: Confidential
Arup carried our screening studies for gravity based LNG
production factilities to be located in shallow arctic waters. A
range of cylindrical and rectangular prismatic caissons were
considered for the support of the production factilities and
storage tanks.

1 Sakhalin II Project
Client: Sakhalin Energy
Arup Energy was appointed to carry out pre-FEED and FEED
for two CGSs located in a severe arctic and seismic region.
The Arup Energy scope included identification of potential
Russian construction sites and material suppliers and the
liaison with casting basin authorities and utility organizations
to obtain construction permit approval.

The platform FEED included design layout of the casting

basin site, structural, geotechnical and naval architecture
design of the two CGSs including extensive non-linear
seismic analysis to determine soil/structure interaction
and substructure/deck interaction. The concept included
the adoption of deck isolation (friction reduction bearings)
between the topsides module and concrete gravity
2 substructure.

Arup Energy also prepared the Technical and Economic

Evaluations (TEOs) requested by the Russian authorities.
Cost and schedule estimates were also prepared.

Iceberg Resistant GBS

Client: Chevron Canada Resources & ExxonMobil
Canada
Arup were commissioned by Chevron Texaco to assess the
stability of a concrete gravity substructure for the Hebron
Field against a 10,000-year event iceberg impact. The
iceberg impact was modelled in the non-linear program
LS-DYNA, which has been specifically developed for impact
assessments. The results of the analyses were used to
develop an appropriate scheme design for the concrete
gravity substructure.

Arup updated its proposed solution for ExxonMobil after

they took over the ownership of the project. The concept
was updated for revised design criteria, material quantities,

cost and schedule and execution plans were prepared for a
substructure supporting up to 55,000 te topside.

1 MCR-A PSGB Caspian Sea
Client: Technip for Petronas
Arup completed the full detailed design of an innovative
pontoon steel gravity based substructure to be installed in
60 m water depth in the Caspian Sea. Arups self-installing
design catered for very high seismicity and poor ground
conditions.

Sivulliq Super Skirt Study

Client: Shell
Arup was commissioned by Shell to develop a concept
design for a skirted foundation system for two steel GBS
schemes for the Sivulliq field in the Beaufort Sea north of
2
Alaska.

Design of the skirts considered wave, seismic and ice

loads. Arup developed an FE model to complete analyses
of the soil-structure interaction (SSI) for the foundation
system to determine required on-bottom weight, skirt depth
and arrangement. A concept level structural design was
completed based upon the SSI results, which included
selection of an appropriate concept and FE modelling of
the skirts to finalize the structural design. The final concept
selection included consideration of the constructability of the
scheme and floating stability during installation.

Client: Exxon Neftegaz

1 North Caspian Project
Client: OKIOC
Arup was contracted to complete selection and concept
design of drilling platform support schemes and ice
protection structures in the NE Caspian Sea. Ice can be
present for 5 months, and can raft to a thickness of around
1m, water depths range between 2 and 8m. Arup were also
responsible for supervision of soil survey.

North Caspian Project

Client: Confidential
Arup was contracted to carry out conceptual design for an
oil production facility founded on buoyancy compensated
2 barges and cofferdam jetties as an alternative to rock
islands. The design was concerned with developing an
understanding of total and differential settlement between
the near buoyant barge structures and the backfilled
cofferdam.
