DEVELOPMENT OF MALAYSIAN STANDARDS
The Department of Standards Malaysia (DSM) is the national standardisation and
accreditation body.

The main function of the Department is to foster and promote standards, standardisation and

Malaysian Standards are developed through consensus by committees which comprise of


balanced representation of producers, users, consumers and others with relevant interests,
as may be appropriate to the subject in hand. These standards where appropriate are
adoption of international standards. Approval of a standard as a Malaysian Standard is
governed by the Standards of Malaysia Act 1996 (Act 549). Malaysian Standards are
reviewed periodically. The use of Malaysian Standards is voluntary except in so far as they
are made mandatory by regulatory authorities by means of regulations, local by-laws or any
other similar ways.

The Department of Standards appoints SIRIM Berhad as the agent to develop Malaysian
Standards. The Department also appoints SIRIM Berhad as the agent for distribution and
sale of Malaysian Standards.

FOREWORD

This Malaysian Standard was developed by the Technical Committee on Smoke Management
under the authority of the Fire Safety and Prevention Industry Standards Committee.

This standard is technically equivalent to ISO 8421-5 : 1988, Fire protection - Vocabulary -
Part 5: Smoke control .

This standard consists of the following parts, under the general title, Vocabulary on fire
protection:

Part 1 : General terms and phenomena of fire.


Part 2 : Structural fire protection.
Part 3 : Fire detection and alarm.
Part 4 : Fire extinction equipment.
Part 5 : Smoke control.
Part 6 : Evacuation and means of escape.
Part 7 : Explosion detection and suppression means.
Part 8 : Terms specific to fire-fighting rescue services and handling hazardous materials.

Compliance with a Malaysian Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal
obligations.

PART 5 : SMOKE CONTROL

This part of MS 1471 gives terms and definitions in the field of smoke control. General terms
are covered by MS 1471: Part 1. Terms are given in English alphabetical order.

3. Terms and definitions


3.1 Air inlet; air intake

Opening through which outdoor air is supplied.

3.2 Damper, smoke

Movable device for smoke control, open or closed in its normal position, which is
automatically or manually actuated.

NOTE. In French a "volet" is normally closed and a "clapet" is normally open.

3.3 Draught

Current of air accelerating toward a fire, supplying air for combustion.

3.4 Drift smoke

Smoke which is no longer in a stratified condition (see smoke layering -3.19).

3.5 Lobby, ventilated

Protected lobby provided with means of ventilation connected to the open air.

3.6 Mechanical smoke control

Smoke control with the help of mechanical means.

3.7 Natural smoke control

Smoke control mainly with the help of the buoyant force of smoke.

3.8 Neutral pressure plane

Level in a building at which the inside pressure is equal to the outside pressure.

3.9 Pressurization

The establishment of a pressure difference across a barrier to protect a stairway, lobby,


escape route or room of a building from smoke penetration.

3.10 Roof (or ceiling) screen

Vertical subdivision fitted internally to the roof (or ceiling) to create an obstacle to lateral flow
of smoke and combustion gases. (Known as "smoke/draft curtains" in the USA.)

3.11 Roof vent

See smoke vent (3.20).

3.12 Stack pressure

Pressure difference caused by a temperature difference creating an air movement within a


duct, chimney or enclosure.

3.13 Smoke zone

Free volume between the floor and the roof or ceiling, bounded by roof or ceiling screens (see
3.10).

3.14 Smoke control

Measures to control the spread or movement of smoke and combustion gases during a fire
within a building.

3.15 Smoke control door

Door set designed to reduce the rate of spread or movement of smoke during a fire.

3.16 Smoke curtain

Fixed, movable or drop screen design as boundary of a reservoir to contain smoke during file.

3.17 Smoke extraction; smoke venting

Measures taken to remove smoke and hot gases from a building.

3.18 Smoke extraction system

System consisting of smoke outlet, smoke extractor, switch, etc, permanently installed in a
building for the purpose of smoke venting.

3.19 Smoke exhaust fan

Fan used to remove smoke and hot gases in the event of fire. It may be either mobile
(generally brought by the fire brigade) or fixed (within the building).

3.20 Smoke layering

Stratification of smoke within a room or space caused by thermal effects in the absence of
turbulence.

3.21 Smoke vent

Opening in the enclosing walls or roof of a building, intended to release heat and smoke in the
event of fire, automatically and/or manually opened.

NOTE. In French, there are separate terms for a wall and roof opening.

3.22 Smoke shaft

Shaft provided to remove smoke in the event of fire.
