July 2017
From Pastor Dala Independence
in the Park
Well here we are, just a few short days and we will all meet face to face! Are you excit-
ed? I am! I have plans to attend the Independence Day Celebration at Schneider Park on
Saturday with my husband Neil and hopefully, we will get to meet several of you there. We
will be there sometime in the afternoon at the food stand that St. Paul is hosting. (From
what I hear, Chuck is a pretty good cook.) I also understand that we are raffling off a beau-
tiful quilt made by Julia Watson. I am a crafty person myself but quilting is an art that I nev-
er have undertaken and admire anyone that can do it.
I have been monitoring the Facebook pages for both St. Paul as well as Brighton Neigh-
bors trying to learn as much as I can about what is going on in both the church and the
community. I am really hoping that you all will be helpful in these areas as well. What bet-
ter way to learn about a church and its people than to learn it from the people themselves?
Which brings up my next topic, Listening Tours. This handy tool was suggested to pas-
tors at a seminar that I recently attended. This is not a Meet and Greet for you to get to
know me but rather a time for me to listen and hear what it is you have to say. You
will be asked to answer the following questions:

What is one thing that I as a new pastor need to know about this congregation?
What is one way that we are going to reach new people in this area?
What is one dream that you have for our church. Found
What are you afraid I will do?
What is one question you would like to ask me?

Although I will not be answering the final question at the listening tour I would like to know
if you have any questions. And yes, I will eventually answer you.
The purpose of the listening tour is so that I as your new Pastor can learn about the
history and culture of this church. We are going to do this thing called ministry together. I
want to see St Paul UMC become one of the most desirable congregations to be a part of. I
want you to allow me to love you and your church. These are things I want but I also want
to learn what you want. I believe the dates and times have already been set up by Nathan
and the PPRC committee and will ask Karen to include that information in this newsletter Finances
for you.
Im very happy to hear that Sunday School and Bible Study are resuming. Yea! Youll
learn very quickly that I believe these are two very important things in the life of a Christian. Weekly offerings
Lastly, I was disappointed to hear that this newsletter does not have a name. So, lets
kick off a Name the Newsletter campaign, shall we? Ive thought of a couple myself such June 4 $0 Pentecost in
as The St. Paul UMC Trumpet or how about St. Paul UMC Ponderings? Okay, so not
very original, all the more reason for you to start thinking up some names. Im sure Jill can the Park
come up with some nice graphics for us. Ive seen evidence of her creative side already. June 11$3222.25
See you very soon! June 18$1400.
