PARTS OF A COMPUTER

MOUSE

Used for making selections. There are two buttons on a mouse. Most
actions are performed using the left mouse button. Some mice have cords and
some do not.

KEYBOARD

Used for entering data, generating commands. The keyboard layout is

similar to a typewriter with additional keys for other functions. There is a number
keypad to the right of the main alphabetical keypad.

MONITOR

The monitor is the visual component of the computer. It displays

information to the user. This is a required part of the computer. This part requires
electricity so it will have its own power cord to plug into an outlet.
SPEAKERS

The speakers are the audio component of the computer.

SYSTEM UNIT

This is where everything comes together to work. The system box holds the
central processing unit to act as the brains of the computer. The unit contains
the motherboard which is the main circuitry for the system. The power supply for
the main computer is located in the unit. All the other parts including the
monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers, and others join at the unit to become a
functional system.

PRINTER

The printer is used to develop a hard copy or paper copy of a document

or picture. The printer connects to the computer and requires the use of its own
power cord.
PARTS OF A KEYBOARD

A computer keyboard is an input device used to enter characters and

functions into the computer system by pressing buttons, or keys. It is the primary
device used to enter text. A keyboard typically contains keys for individual
letters, numbers and special characters, as well as keys for specific functions. A
keyboard is connected to a computer system using a cable or a wireless
connection.

QWERTY PAD

The QWERTY pad is the main section of letters on the keyboard. You use
these letters mainly for typing and, in various combinations, as action shortcuts in
programs and computer games.

NUMBER PADS

The far right side of the keyboard features a number pad that resembles a
calculator. This pad is essential for numbers-oriented programs such as Excel, but
you also can use it to input numbers while typing. More number keys are just
above the QWERTY pad; these keys also feature symbols activated by the "Shift"
key.
ARROW KEYS

The right bottom of a keyboard features four directional arrow keys. These
keys provide navigation through documents and help you scroll in Web
browsers.

F BAR

The top of a keyboard features the F Keys, a selection of keys that extends
to F12 on most keyboards. These keys serve different functions. For example,
pressing "Alt" and "F4" exits out of a program. Pressing "F1" usually opens a help
screen.

EXTRA KEYS

Newer keyboards sometimes have shortcut keys above the F Keys. These
might include "Power," "Sleep Mode," "Calculator," "My Computer" and "Web."
Some also include media controls for movies and music.
PARTS OF A MOUSE

The purpose of mouse is to convert your hand movement into a usable

computer format. When the mouse is moved, this movement rolls a ball found
inside. You should put the mouse on flat table or mouse pad in order to move.

WHEELS

A scroll wheel (or mouse wheel) is a hard plastic or rubbery disc (the
"wheel") on a computer mouse that is perpendicular to the mouse surface. It is
normally located between the left and right mouse buttons.

TRACK BALL

A trackball is a pointing device consisting of a ball held by a socket

containing sensors to detect a rotation of the ball about two axislike an
upside-down mouse with an exposed protruding ball.[1] The user rolls the ball to
position the on-screen pointer, using their thumb, fingers, or commonly the palm
of the hand while using the fingertips to press the mouse buttons
AXELS- The two axles (represent the X and Y direction) will turn as a result
of the rolling ball. Each axle connects to wheel (resembles like a gear) which
spins when the axle rotates.

INFRARED LED - Beside each rotating wheel, there are an infrared LED
(light-emitting diode) and infrared Sensor. The LED sends a path of light to the
wheel.

SENSOR - The sensor, found on the other side of the wheel, detects the
pulses of light interrupted by rotating wheel.

PARTS OF A SYSTEM UNIT

MOTHERBOARD

The motherboard is the main circuit board of a microcomputer. It is also known

as the main board or system board.

CPU OR PROCESSOR

The CPU is the central electronic chip that determines the processing power of
the computer.

RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY

Store data and instructions that are used by the CPU to perform some task.
CAPACITOR

A device used to store an electric charge, consisting of one or more pairs of

conductors separated by an insulator.

CPU HEAT SINK AND FAN

Help keep the CPU cool and prevent it from overheating.

POWER SUPPLY

Power Supply/PSU power supply unit, converts outlet power, normally power
available at our place is AC power and all computer components works on DC
power. Switched mode power supply is used to convert AC power in to DC
power, It also control the voltages and currents for the various internal
components.
HARD DISK DRIVE

Hard Drive/Hard Disk the "long-term memory" of the computer, used for
persistent storage i.e. the things stored on it remain even when the computer is
powered down. The operating system, and all your programs and data are
stored here.

VIDEO CARD

Video Card/Graphics Card/GPU does processing relating to video output. Some

motherboards have an "onboard" GPU built in so you don't need (but may add)
a separate video card. Otherwise, you will need a video card. These plug into a
slot on the motherboard and provide a place to connect a monitor to your
computer.
PARTS OF A DESKTOP

DESKTOP

The Windows screen consists of the Desktop, the Taskbar and windows. The
Desktop contains some number of icons providing access to different functions.
The Taskbar contains the Start button giving access to nearly everything on the
system. Each program running on the system will be in a window. Windows
consist of several parts: title bar, menu bar, scroll bars, etc.

TOOLBARS

These Toolbars give you quick access to any function you want included simply
by single-clicking on them.

TASKBAR

The Taskbar is normally across the bottom of your screen as you see above. At
the left end of the Taskbar is the Start button which gives you access to all the
programs available on your computer. To the right of the Start button, you'll see
a button for each window you have on the desktop. On the right end of the
Taskbar is the SysTray which will normally contain some number of icons in
addition to the system time.
