This research paper is about the Dominican College of Tarlac

(DCT) Hospitality Management Students of S.Y. 2015-2016 who took their On-
the-Job Training abroad. This study attempts to find out the positive and
negative experiences of DCT students while in their on the job training abroad.
It provides the students and readers an impression about International on-the-
job training.
The type of research used in this study is Qualitative Research, to gain an

understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations and is

measured by the quality of something rather than its quantity.

Interview is the tool used in this study, with the interviewees responding
to questions through Facebook messenger.
In identifying the participants, this study uses purposive sampling,
selecting only the 3rd year students of College of Hospitality Management S.Y.
2015-2016 who took on-the-job training abroad.
The data for this research are presented using quotations, tables and pie
charts based on the Interviewees answers to the interview guide questions.
This research focuses on eleven (11) DCT students who went to the U.S.
for their on-the-job training. However, only seven (7) of them agreed to
participate in the study.
The Outcome of the study shows that 86% of those who went on
International on-the-job training of the College of Hospitality Management have
more positive experiences than negative experiences. Experiences are the
following: Being independent, being responsible to perform tasks, to be able to
learn and gain new things and new knowledge, to know more about the
environment and the culture of another country, and being able to overcome
challenges and to maintain a purpose in life in spite of difficulties or obstacles.

INTRODUCTION

On-the-job training describes the process of teaching an

employee to complete the key activities needed for their job after they are
hired. Employees are training at the place of work while he/she is doing the
actual job. Usually a professional trainer (or sometimes an experienced
employee) serves as the course instructor using hands-on training. On-the-job
training simply means training an employee to complete a task or function when
they are already hired and working. On-the-job training is a part of a college
curriculum that aims to train and orient students about the work and their
future career. International on-the-job training is where students get to work
independently on real life problems and prepare them for the challenges and
demands of professional practices in abroad and where they experience what it
is like working and living in a foreign country.

International on-the-job training of College of Hospitality Management

first started on the year 2010. The practicum training is a joint effort between
the school and the participating hotels, restaurants, and clubs to uphold
industry standards and fully tap the expertise of future practitioners in the
business. While the school provides the basic theories and practice, the
participating establishments provide resources and work situation where
students can apply principles they have learned in school. The exposure to the
different work situations is provided to enable students to experience and

observe the practical application of theories learned in the classroom. The

students are encouraged to maximize their learning while they are undertaking
their practicum training.

Receiving trainings internationally undergoes different experiences and

challenges. What are the positive and negative experiences of International On-
The-Job Training? The objective of this research is to; A.) Find out the positive
and negative experiences of the students abroad; B.) Give the students an
impression about International On-The-Job Training; C.) Be used as basis on
future researchers who would be interested on the same topic.

This research is about the Dominican College of Tarlac Hospitality

Management students of S.Y 2015-2016 who took International On-The-Job
Training. It allows the students to be exposed and be familiar with the different
areas in the operation of a lodging or food service establishment. In some
instances, information relevant for the practicum report could be generated
from documents found in the office or through interviews with an officer of the
establishment. The Cultural Exchange Program of the US State Department
allows current full-time university students of any course, 18 to 25 years old and
preferably in their second or third year of university to enter United States and
meet new people, learn about the Countrys culture while working in a private
company during their summer break and at the end of the work experience,
have the opportunity to travel around the United States. In turn, in the true
nature of a cultural exchange program, the participant will enrich the lives of
other people by giving them the chance to learn about each others culture and
country. The time spent in the United States will be filled with opportunities to

meet new friends, learn new skills, overcome challenges, help gain
independence and prepare the participant for the future that will be increasingly
dependent on international cooperation and cross-cultural understanding. The
work and travel program is a 3 to 4 months summer program, usually from
March to June every year. The approval document, called DS 2019, defines the
start and end dates of the program. Visa holders are given extra 30 days for
travel after their work experience contracts. The practitioners work
approximately 30 to 40 hours per week. Some companies have overtime and
holiday work that are paid extra. In some cases, students are allowed a second
job.

Being independent, being responsible to do task, to be able to learn and

gain new things and new knowledge, to know more about the environment and
the culture of other Country, being able to overcome challenges and to maintain
a purpose in spite of difficulty or obstacle. To be a student is to learn whatever
that can be inspired to, love the path and do the best with positive outlook in
mind.

It is hypothesized that hospitality management students who took their

on-the -job training internationally have more positive experiences than
negative.

METHODS
A.) Type of Research
The type of research used in this analysis proposal is Qualitative
Research. Qualitative research is relating to, measuring, or measured by the
quality of something rather than its quantity. It is used to gain an understanding
of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations.
The tool used for this research is Interview where the participant answers
some questions that are being asked by the Interviewer.

B.) Participants
Total Population of 3rd year students in College of Hospitality
Management S.Y 2015-2016, who took International On-the-job Training - 11

C.) Sampling Technique

The sampling technique used in this research is purposive sampling.
Purposive sampling is a non-probability sample that is selected based on
characteristics of a population and the objective of the study. Purposive
sampling is also known as judgmental, selective, or subjective sampling.

D.) Data Presentation

The Data presentation for this research is presented on paragraph and
quotation form which shows questions and answers of the particular
interviewee. The study also used table and pie chart that shows results and
percentage based on the interviewees questions and answers. 1
RESULTS

The following are the results of the Interview conducted for this study, below
represents the answers of the Interviewees from to the interview guide
question.

1. What are the positive experience(s) on your International OJT focusing on

your work area?

IOJT 1;

We were able to meet other students from other countries and share
their culture and as well as experience the culture in America. We were
able to enhance our English speaking skills and adapt with their work
ethics.

IOJT 2;

Different work environment, Different culture

IOJT 3;

I was able to meet other students from other countries. Somehow

learned from their culture. Also learned a lot and certified from the

trainings I've been through before doing the actual job.

IOJT 4;

positive exp, the chance to meet and serve dif cultures, enhance my
communication skills, na improve ko rn yng mga skills ko na akala ko
hindi ko kaya pero sobra kayang kaya ko pala like ung pag market ng
games, at napakita ko ung mga hidden skills ko

IOJT 5;

I got to experience working around people from different countries with

different personalities which helped me understand their culture and way
of life even more.

IOJT 6;

I have alot of good experiences on my international on the job training

focusing on my work area like getting praised by my employers and
having fun with the other staffs. I also gained alot of knowledge and it
helps me acquire new skills.

IOJT7;

I was able to learned a lot of things working with international students,

as well as the other american work mates and managers. Learned how
to work hard like americans and be on time! My communication skill also
developed and how to work under pressure.

2. What are the negative experience(s) on your International OJT focusing on

your work area?

IOJT 1;

Negative experience for me was regarding the job offer I signed is a lot
different with the actual job I worked there. I had several accidents at
work that I never get the chance to address to my employer.

Language barriers and cultural differences

IOJT 3;

For me, I didn't see any negative experience on my work area because
everything is in proper process, we all have to go trainings and seminars.
Our manager and supervisors are fair to everyone.

IOJT 4;

I think ung mga iba mong work mate mejo may attitude like ung mga
black americans or maybe naiingit lang sila , kasi na experience ko na
saktan ako ng black americans as in sinasapok ako pero lumaban tlg pti
siya sinapok ko .

IOJT 5;

Dealing with customer complaints, adjusting with work schedules.

The only negative experience was feeling homesick whenever I'm at my

work because it was my first time being away from home for a long
time.

IOJT 7;

There is no really negative experienced I have had during my

international ojt. But, there are times that I have encountered rough
moments with customers. I can say that it's just about adjustment and
how you handle and work out with tough time and moments, specially I
am not used to it, but when you learn and get use to it things will slowly
get better and better as you go on working!

3. What are the positive experience(s) on your International OJT outside your
work area?

IOJT 1;

At an apartment where we stayed, we have learned a lot from the

housemates we've been with. We have established friendship and even
made enemies among them.

Acquaintance with new people and community

What is good about work and travel program is that, it's not all about
working and just completing your required hours for your OJT but also
you have the opportunity to explore whats in there. You can visit other
states and bond with your new friends and have fun.

I learned how to be independent, I met new friends. I also got the

chance to travel to some of the most beautiful landmarks in the US.

The positive experiences outside my work area was meeting new people
and friends and also experience their culture. Another good experience is
that I was given the opportunity to travel in some of the beautiful places
there.

IOJT 7;

Of course, the very positive side of going on international OJT is having

work experienced in America which is my biggest edge as a student.
Plus, earning money during ojt, and also I was given a chance to travel
in some states of US and have had a cultural exchanged with locals and
other international students from all over the world. I was living outside
of my comfort zone.

4. What are the negative experience(s) on your International OJT outside your
work area?

There was an incident where we have to cover for our apartment owner
when she had some problem with the housing authority. Some of our
housemates had to move to another house and we were asked to do
white lies for the sake of the comfort and safety of all of us.

Indifferences among housemates. Misunderstandings and small fights

I couldn't control myself on shopping and buying stuffs in the outlet

store that's why I was not able to bring back the money that I've spent
for this program.

Wla ako negative side sa outside eh kng meron man ung homesick,
pero kasi lht ng negative exp ko lahat un ginawa kong positive at dhl dun
hnd ko ma aachive mga na achieve ko bilang int'l ojt. At nag enjoy tlg
ako ng sobra.

Being away from home, family and friends.

The negative experience of mine outside my work area is when I arrived

there, it was already snowing so my body had a hard time adjusting to
the weather, but got used to it after a few days.

Negative side is paying my bills during my ojt like house rent, budget for
foods and everyday fare. Goodness! Living in US is costly!! lol.

According to the interviewees, 57% (4 out of 7) said that their positive

experiences focusing on the work area is they enhanced new skills, while the
other 43% (3 out of 7) said they have engage new culture and met other
human race to work with.

According to the interviewees, 43% (3 out of 7) said that their negative

experiences focusing on the work area is dealing with customer or employers
complaints , while 29% (2 out of 7) said they were adjusting on the cultural
differences, and the other 28% (2 out of 7) said they have no negative
experiences encountered.

According to the interviewees, 71% (5 out of 7) said that their positive

experiences outside their work theyve learned to walk in their own shoes or for
being independent, while the other 29% (2 out of 7) said they have the
opportunity to travel in different places in US and meeting new friends and
community.

According to the interviewees, 43% (3 out of 7) said that their negative

experiences focusing on the work area is they misses their loved ones or for
being homesick, while the 29% (2 out of 7) said their negative side is paying
their own expenses such as bill, foods, rentals etc., and the other 28% (2 out of
7) said that they have no negative experiences encountered.

This research is about the experiences of the College of Hospitality

Management students who took their On the Job Training international.
Receiving trainings internationally undergoes different experiences and
challenges. This study found out the positive and negative experiences of the
students. Their most positive experience is how being independent and being
responsible to do their task and the most negative is language barrier and the
spending a lot of money.

The figure represents the participants who took International on the job
training international, by indicating the number of people on the plane
represents the total population of the students who are boarded and traveling
International. Graphical presentation of people below shows that only 7 out of
11 participants contributed to the study. This study found out that 6 (86%) of
the students who took their on the job training internationally have encountered
positive experiences most of the time, either inside or outside their working
station, and only 1 (14%) students have experienced most of the negative.
