From its very founding, at the begining of the second hald od the 15th century, Sarajevo became

one of the most important cities of Southeastern Europe. As the capital of Bosnian sanjak, and
later Bosnian eyalet, for a long time, was the most exposed, and westernmost part of territory of
the most powerful empire of that time, towards Christian west. Sarajevo and Bosnia soon gained
great strategic importance within Ottoman Empire.
At the Berlin Conference in 1878. weakened Ottoman Empire relinquished Bosnia to the Austro-
Hungarian Monarchy- However, local, mainly muslim population did not accept this and
organized resistance against the dominant army force. Particularly vicios and bloody fighting
took place in Sarajevo. Resistance and victims of everyone who can carry a gun, includin
women and children, were in vain.
The shots fired by Gavrilo Princip on June 28 1914, here in Sarajevo, marked the beginning of
world war I. Behind the event, known in the world, as the Sarajevo assassination, to be

Bravadiluk and Kazandiluk street
The street of the locksmith craftmanship, in the 16th century Handan arija (the
Hammersmith/forger bazaar), famous for hammering renowned Dubrovnik Locks, stretched
from the City Hall (Vijenica) through the Baarija Mosque.
In general, Sarajevo's bazaar, designated a street for each craftsmanship, where items of that
paritcular craftsmanship were made and sold. Even now, the craftsmanship is dieing out, the
streets still have their original names. Such os the case with Bravadiluk, the locksmith's street,
where, for many years now, has not existed a single locksmith shop. They have been replaced
with different restaurants specialized in preparation of local specialty dishes, even a modern
European pastry shop.
Today, this oriental street resembles any other European gourmet street immediately
recommended to the visitors. The only difference is in the cuisine. Offered dishes are mainly
bosnian, even Oriental-Bosnian, which makes Bravadiluk attractive not only to the visitors, but
to the Sarajevans in search of a delicious meal.
Kazandiluk - This is tje only street that preserved its originally intended function, and
somewhat, the appearance. Kazandiluk has maintained five centuries long tradition of hand
made copper and stunnic dishes and other items for home use.
Today's craftsman do not fall behind their skilfull ancestors. The everlasting dilemma of
the visitors of smiliar bazaars throughout the world: if the merchandise sold in these shops are
handmade, or only touched up(dotjerana) industrial merchandise, was resolved in the best way
possible. On the streets od Sarajevo, craftsmen used empty bullet shells and other ammunition
that fell on Sarajevo from 1992 to 1995, to create never seen before, carved objects, under A
Grenade Per Person slogan. It turned out that there was much more than only one per citizen
fired on Sarajevo (approximately 2 million of all sorts of ammunition was fired on Sarajevo,
thus, the craftsmen did not lack in material.
