With the 1st quarter in the record books, HERS
Global is well on its way to another successful
year. Having well surpassed our MEGA March
revenue targets, April was a shorter month but
still a productive one. And the Intertek world is
taking notice as we are presently in 2nd spot
year to date for the medium sized business
lines that we are competing (in a friendly way)
against for top honours again in 2017 as the
best performing global team. By the numbers, we
are 7% ahead of budget for total revenue year to
date and 16% better than last year at this time,
10% ahead of our prot budget and almost 22%
more protable than last year at this time. Our
hard work, smart work and innovative customer-
focused services are in high demand and are
helping to express the TQA difference as we
work to deliver our new TQA Customer Promise
every day and everywhere through the following
key initiatives:
A. We are seeing very productive outcomes from
our recently launched technical working groups
for Biocides, Food Contact, Cosmetics, business
development and other service area-specic
groups also meeting routinely for Hazcom
(MSDS, etc.). We will be launching the Restricted
Substances working group shortly, with hopefully
more to follow. The goal of these TWGs is to
increase sharing of opportunities, ideas, staff
and lessons learned. They allow us to instantly
expand our global reach and team depth and
breadth in order to approach and win larger global
clients. If you would like to be part of one of these
TWGs, please contact Robyn King and join our
upcoming teleconferences. Get involved, speak
your mind, pitch in to help us win!
B. ATIC sales is allowing us to connect with
the other BLs, global account managers and
regional leads for those clients that we felt
we could better penetrate through strength in
numbers. We have identied the top 25 global
clients to focus on for 2017 and key HERS staff
have taken the lead in benchmarking where
we stand with each client, aligning our services
with the other teams and preparing to make a
presentation to each clients senior management
around how we can become their TQA assurance
service provider of choice. If all goes as planned,
this initiative will generate over 750kGBP of new
revenue across all of HERS in 2017!
C. I have had the honour so far of meeting in
person with our HERS teams from USA, Canada,
China, Germany, Sweden and our new cosmetics
family members from the Regulatory Affairs
Product Safety team in France. I look forward to
meeting with the Italy team and our close friends
in the Netherlands food contact lab over the
summer. I hope to meet with each team in person
by year end so that we can be a truly integrated
network, without borders and without some
of the isolation and disconnectedness that has
plagued us in recent years before becoming a
GBL. I will battle jet lag to ensure we have plenty
of time to strategize together, share the good
lessons and challenging issues we need to tackle
to continue to rene our operations and to take
some time to focus on the soft skills of business
development and the art of consulting.
In closing, I couldnt be more honoured, challenged
and energized to be able to support such an
awesome global team. From the junior expert to
our most recognized global expert, I love that we
are always looking for ways to improve on how
we used to do things and that no one is scared
to tell it like it is and roll up their sleeves to help
build a stronger HERS. I remain available to any

Branding Update
As mentioned in our last months newsletter, everyone should have received document
templates (i.e., reports, letters, and proposals). We have been successful in the launch of an
online portal with Staples for ordering business cards. Over the next couple weeks this will be
expanded to include letterhead and envelopes.

 Conference Success
HERS expert recently participated in the In Cosmetics exhibition, which took place in London. Overall, the team received very
positive feedback and the visitors to our booth were very complimentary of our new brand. The team was able to collect 146
leads and contacts during the show. The rst round of opportunities have been entered into iConnect; the team continues to
follow up with leads and are hopefully this will result in additional projects.
Additionally, Intertek HERS Germany and Sweden exhibited at the Chemical Watch conference Reach into the future in Berlin,
from 24-25 April. During the event, Anna Forsgren presented SIEFs doing the work and took part of an expert panel at
another session to speak about our testing capabilities. The expo was visited by around 200 participants and there was ample
opportunity to engage in valuable discussions with potential partners. As with the In Cosmtics exhibition, the team received
several positive comments on the new brand and colors of the booth.

SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS
SIG Building Solutions is rst company to be BES6001certied by Intertek

With European Governments increasing
their focus on sustainable development,
many companies are recognizing the
need to prove that their buildings are built
with sustainability in mind. Responsible
Sourcing of Construction Products is
demonstrated through an ethos of supply
chain management and product stewardship
and encompasses social, economic and
environmental dimensions. To add credibility
to responsible sourcing claims, BRE requires
that BES 6001 auditing and certication
is completed by one of the ve approved
independent, third party assessors. In 2015,
Intertek was authorized as an issuing body
for the BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing
Certication.
Over the last 12 months, Intertek Health,
Environmental & Regulatory Services (HERS)
experts have been working with SIG Building
Solutions (SIG), Europes largest manufacturer
of insulation and interior t out products to
help them achieve BES 6001 certication.
The BRE standard BES 6001 enables
manufacturers products to be independently
assessed and certied as being responsibly
sourced. The scheme is recognized by the
BREEAM family of certication schemes
and the Code for Sustainable Homes where
credits can be awarded for construction
products independently certied through BES
6001.
During the assessment, SIG successfully
demonstrated that they have developed
a formalized structure to manage the
environmental and social aspects of their
supply chain and ensure the responsible
sourcing of their construction products. SIG is
now the rst company to receive BES 6001
certication from Intertek.
In order to receive a BES 6001 certication,
the following three categories must
demonstrate the principles of responsible
sourcing:
Organizational Management
Supply Chain Management
Sustainable Development.
Securing certication to BES 6001 will
benet all organizations within the supply
chain. Manufacturers benet through:
Differentiation of their products against
competitors
Demonstrating corporate reputation and
leadership
Benchmarking their manufacturing
performance and facilitating continuous
improvement through certication
Speciers and purchasers benet through:
Securing additional BREEAM credits for
their buildings
Reducing risk down the supply chain
Demonstrating corporate reputation and
leadership.
The Intertek Sustainability Team within HERS
is focused on developing and marketing this
new sustainability certication service and
has already begun a second BES6001 project
with a large mining and steel manufacturer.

Children in the EU
For those of you who missed the chance at Vitafoods, Intertek HERS is pleased to
be able to present our Senior Director Nigel Baldwins presentation on the safety
assessment of additives and ingredients for infants and young children in the EU. This
presentation will cover 5 key areas
Firstly we will look at the mandate given by the European Commission to EFSA
in relation to the evaluation of food additives, contact materials, pesticides and
contaminants added/present in foods for these age groups
Secondly to look at the rst stage of the EFSA process draft guidelines for infants less
than 16 weeks of age
Thirdly to briey explain how this may effect nutritional/physiological ingredients being
developed and requiring novel food approval;
Fourthly we will talk about the other considerations in relation to the risk assessment of
ingredients for older infants and young children, mainly related to exposure assessment
And nally we will summarise what this may mean for the industry as EFSA moves
through its re-evaluation program for food additives and the actions you need to
consider

Abstract
To assess the potential safety of lipid soluble green tea extract, also referred to as lipid soluble tea polyphenols (LSTP), a series of genotoxicity
tests were conducted, including an Ames, in vivo mouse micronucleus, and in vivo mouse sperm abnormality test. The toxicity of LSTP was
evaluated in 90- and 30-day feeding studies. LSTP did not show mutagenic activity in the Ames test and no genotoxic potential in the in vivo
assays at doses up to 10 g/kg body weight (bw). In the 90-day feeding study, LSTP was given in the diet at levels providing 0, 0.125, 0.25, or
0.50 g/kg bw/day. No signicant effects were noted on body weight, food consumption, hematology, clinical chemistry, organ weights, and
histopathological examination. The no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) was therefore considered to be 0.50 g/kg bw/day, the highest dose
tested. Likewise, dosing of SD rats by gavage for 30 days also showed no adverse effects of growth, hematology, clinical chemistry, organ weights,
or histopathology at doses of 0.58, 1.17, and 2.33 g/kg bw/day. The NOAEL in the 30-day study was considered to be the highest dose tested.
These data provide evidence to support the safe use of LSTP in food.

Abstract
The potential toxicity of two savory food ingredients produced by fermentation of enzymatically hydrolyzed corn starch (Savory Base 100 and
Savory Base 200) was evaluated individually in a bacterial reverse mutation assay, an in vitro mammalian cell gene mutation assay, an acute oral
study and as a mixture in a 90-day dietary study. In the bacterial reverse mutation and in vitro mammalian cell gene mutation assays, neither
ingredient was mutagenic at concentrations up to 5000 g/plate and 5000 g/mL, respectively in the presence and absence of metabolic
activation. In the acute study, the no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) for each Savory Base 100 and Savory Base 200 in male and female
rats was 2000 mg/kg body weight. In the 90-day study, the hematology and clinical chemistry ndings and histopathological changes noted in the
liver, heart and kidneys were deemed to be of no toxicological signicance, as the mean values were within the historical control range, were not
dose-dependent, occurred at a similar frequency in control groups, or only occurred in the control group. Considering these ndings, the NOAEL for
Savory Base 100 and Savory Base 200 was 2333 and 1167 mg/kg body weight, respectively, the highest dose tested in each case.

The EU Biocides Product Regulation
528/2012: White Paper Download
In 2012, in order to streamline and improve
the evaluation and authorisation process for
biocidal products entering the EU market, the
European Parliament adopted Regulation (EU)
No 528/2012 concerning the availability and
use of biocidal products making available on
the EU market and use of biocidal products
(commonly referred to as the BP Regulation
or BPR). Biocides are widely used industrially
and domestically and include insect repellents,
disinfectants, water purication products,
rodenticides, anti-mould sprays, and many
material preservatives. As a direct consequence
of their intended function to disrupt biological
organisms, these chemicals can pose risks to
humans, animals, and the environment.
