1) Diagram 3 shows atwo opaque cups, A and B, containing different amount of water.

A similar coin is placed at the bottom of each cup.

When the coin is observed from the same point, the image of the coin in Cup A cannot be seen, but
the image of the coin in cup B can be seen

Based on your observation on the depth of the water and the position of the image of the coin

A) State one suitable inference

The depth of the water affects the position of the image of the coin

B) State one hypothesis that could be investigated

The more the depth of the water is, the more the apparent depth of the image will be.

C) With the use of appratus such as a tall beaker, pins and other apparatus, describe an experiment
to investigate the hypothesis stated in (b)

(I) The aim of experiment

To investigate the relationship between real depth and apparent depth

(II) The variables of the experiment

Manipulated variable : The depth of the image/apparent depth

Responding variable : The position of the image/the apparent depth

Constant Variable :The type of liquid /the type of beaker

(III) The list of apparatus and material

Tall beaker, wateer, pins, set of retort stand and metre rule.

(IV) The arrangement of apparatus

-A pin is placed at a base of the beaker

-Another pin is clamped to theretort clamp outside the beaker

(V)The procedure used in the experiment .

Describe how to control and measure the manipulated variables and how to measure the
responding variables

- Fill a beaker with water to a depth 10cm

- measure the position of the pin from the surface of the water to thepin,h1

- repeat the experiment at least 4 times

- repeat the experiment by increasing the depth of the water ; 12cm, 14cm, 16cm, 18cm.

- deter,minethe corresponding apparent depth h1, h2, h3, h4, h5.

(VI) The way tabulate data.

Depth of water / (D/cm) Apparent depth (d/cm)

10 H1

12 H2

14 H3

16 H4

18 H5

(VII) The way analyse the data.

Plot a graph of apparent depth against the depth of water
