ACCOMMODATIONS
Rooms at local lodging in Hershey and Hummelstown are blocked for graduation weekend. Special discounted group
rates are available for the nights of Friday, May 19, Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21. To receive the group rate,
rooms must be booked directly with the hotel by April 1, 2017. A complete listing of accommodations can be found in
the Appendix.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

BOOKSTORE
The Bookstore will be open on graduation weekend. The hours of operation:
Saturday, May 20 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Sunday, May 21 8 - 11 a.m.

COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY INFORMATION


Arrival Time
The ceremony begins at 1 p.m.; however, all graduates should arrive at Founders Hall by 11:30 a.m. Students will
gather in the rotunda of Founders Hall to take group pictures at 11:45 a.m. (graduate students, including M.D./Ph.D.
students), 12:00 p.m. (physician assistant students), 12:15 p.m. (University Park medical students) and 12:30 p.m.
(medical students).

Directions, Maps and Parking


Click here for directions to Founders Hall.

All students and their guests must park in Lots C, D or E on the Milton Hershey School campus. There is a significant
distance to walk from the parking lots to the entrance of Founders Hall. Shuttle service from the lots to the entrance
is available, so allow time for the shuttle ride or the walk. This information should be passed on to your guests who
plan to attend the ceremony. Carpools are suggested due to the size of the event. A map of the campus and parking
lots can be found in the Appendix.

Duration
The ceremony typically lasts two hours.

Instructions
Detailed instructions regarding the ceremony procedures will be emailed to students in the beginning of May.
Students are asked to review the document prior to graduation day in order to familiarize themselves with the order
of the day.

Tickets
There are no tickets for graduation and no limit on the number of guests. Founders Hall can accommodate the
anticipated number of attendees.

Wheelchair Access
Wheelchair access is available from Parking Lot A.

DIPLOMA AND DIPLOMA FRAMES


All graduates will receive their diplomas at the Commencement Ceremony. One exception is for Ph.D. students who
receive their diplomas in the mail if they completed their degree requirements in the preceding fall or summer. If you
completed your degree in fall or summer and did not receive your diploma, please contact Penn States Registrars Office
at 814-865-6357.

The size of a graduate school and physician assistant diploma is 8.5 x 11. The size of a medical school diploma is 14"

DVD
The Commencement Ceremony will be recorded and a DVD will be available for purchase at a cost of $20. For complete
details please see the order form found in the Appendix.

Golf Scramble Tournament

GRADUATION ATTENDANCE (GRADUATING IN ABSENTIA)


Medical Students: University Policy requires each degree candidate to be present at graduation exercises to receive the
diploma in person unless excused by the Dean and University Records Officer. Requests for graduating in absentia
should be made to Ms. Diane Gill, Registrar, dgill@hmc.psu.edu by March 1, 2017.

Physician Assistant Students: It is the programs expectation that each student will be present at graduation exercises to
receive the diploma in person unless excused by the Program Director, Christine Bruce. For students requesting to
graduate in absentia, requests should be submitted to Ms. Bruce, cbruce1@hmc.psu.edu by March 1, 2017.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Graduate Students
Graduate students should check with their program to be sure they have completed all requirements. If all
requirements have been satisfied, they must notify the University of their intent to graduate. The process can be
found in the Appendix.

HOODERS
At the Commencement Ceremony, immediately after students receive their diplomas, they walk across stage to be
hooded by faculty. There will be faculty stationed at one or two areas of the stage, depending on the program.

Graduate Hooders
There will be one hooding station for the graduate students. Each station will have a faculty member that has been
selected by the Graduate School in addition to the students advisor, member of their doctoral committee or
graduate program director. Students must identify their hooder and communicate a request to them, then provide
the name to the graduate office.

Medical Hooders
There will be two hooding stations for the medical students with two faculty at each of the stations.

Physician Assistant Hooders


There will be one hooding station for the physician assistant students with two faculty present.

MATCH DAY (MEDICAL STUDENTS)


Match Day is on Friday, March 17, 2017, 8:30 a.m. 1:30 p.m. It will be held at the Zembo Shrine, 2801 N. 3rd Street
#2, Harrisburg. Breakfast will be served followed by presentations then the envelop opening at noon. For more

NAME PRONUNCIATION
Graduates with a unique name or one that is often mispronounced are asked to provide the phonetic spelling of their
name to their respective programs. Please capitalize the syllable(s) that require emphasis.

NEWSPAPER RELEASE
The College of Medicine's Marketing Department can facilitate the placement of graduation announcements in

PICTURES
Professional photographers will take pictures at the Commencement Ceremony. No other photography is permitted
during the ceremony.

All pictures related to graduation weekend including Commencement Awards, Commencement Ceremony and class
pictures will be available for download via Penn State Box: https://psu.box.com/v/Commencement2017. Pictures will be
uploaded the week following the ceremony.

On graduation day, the graduate students group picture will be taken at 11:45 a.m.; the physician assistant students at
12 p.m. the University Park students at 12:15 p.m. and the medical students at 12:30 p.m. Pictures will be taken
promptly at their scheduled time in the rotunda of Founders Hall.

Jostens is the colleges contracted vendor for announcements and regalia. All students who participate in the ceremony
are required to purchase a full regalia set which includes a cap or tam, tassel, gown and hood. Beginning January 1,
2017, you can place your order directly at the Jostens website. Please note that your order can take up to five weeks to
ship.

To ensure you have the correct regalia set and to eliminate some visible creases, please take it out of its bag prior to
graduation day.

Hood (Colors)
As part of the regalia set, graduates will have an academic hood, which will be placed on them during the ceremony,
after receiving their diplomas. The hood color represents your university and your degree/discipline. All Penn State
hoods will have an inner lining of blue and white; the velvet trim will be represented as follows:

Commencement Speaker
The 2017 Commencement Speaker is Darrell G. Kirch, MD, president and chief executive officer of the Association of
American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Dr. Kirch also served as the dean of Penn State College of Medicine from 2000-

Student Speakers
As is the tradition each year, one medical student, one graduate student and one physician assistant student will
speak during the Commencement Ceremony. This is a high honor in that these students will be representing their
classes as a whole.

Medical Students: Students are asked by their class council to (self-)nominate fellow classmates to speak at
Commencement as well as Match Day. Those nominated will present to a panel of vice, associate and assistants
deans from Educational Affairs and their class council. For more information, please contact Alex Gundersen,

Graduate Students: Requests for graduate student speaker nominations will be determined via email in early April.

Notifying the University of Your Intent to Graduate

Notifying the University of Your Intent to Graduate


To graduate, you must satisfy all the University, college, and major requirements that were in effect at the time of
your most recent admission, or re-enrollment, as a degree candidate to the University.

Process:
1. It is your responsibility to notify the University of your intent to graduate (policy 86-00).
2. Confirm the activation period on the Academic Calendar for the dates when you can activate your intent to
graduate.
3. Using the "Apply for Graduation" link within the My Academics page in the LionPATH Student Center, you can
set your intent to graduate.

4. After the activation period expires, you must contact the appropriate college office or Graduate Enrollment
Services to activate or remove your intent to graduate.

Unofficial programs are distributed at the commencement ceremony. If your intent to graduate is activated after
the student information has been sent to the publisher, your name will not appear in the program. For fall and
spring ceremonies, the data is sent during the tenth week of the semester. For the summer ceremony, the data
is sent during the fifth week.

week elective.

5. Passing score on the Year III OSCE

6. Completion of the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE); a requirement for


residency application
You must meet with Dr. Dwight Davis, Dr. Milind Kothari, Dr. Todd Felix, or Dr. Eileen M.
Moser, in the late Summer or the Fall of Phase IV to get this document completed

7. Satisfactory completion of all Phase III-IV required acting internships/critical care


rotations, Translating Health Sciences course, Profession of Medicine III course, the
Humanities requirement, and the equivalent of four 4-week electives

8. Passing score on USMLE Step 1


You must receive a passing score before you may begin Phase IV of medical
school

9. Passing score on USMLE Step 2 Clinical Knowledge


You must take this exam before January 1 of Phase IV of medical school

10. Passing score on USMLE Step 2 Clinical Skills


You must take this exam before January 1 of Phase IV of medical school

11. Completion of the Medical Student Research Project (MSR):


The final deadline for receipt of the MSR proposal is August 31, 2015
The FINAL deadline for receipt of your MSR report is December 23, 2016
Submitting your report after this date will jeopardize your graduation. (This does
not apply if you were granted an exemption.)

13. Return two pairs of scrubs to a scrub machine located on campus on or before
May 19, 2017.

14. Return your PSU photo ID badge to Student Affairs Office, room C1802, on or before
May 19, 2017.

15. You are required to do the following on or before May 1, 2017:


Return your student mailbox key to Mail Services, room CG701
Complete a Residency Address Form thats posted online at
http://www.pennstatehershey.org/web/md/home/current/residencyaddressform

Clean out your Anatomy locker.

16. All Stafford and Graduate PLUS loan borrowers are required to complete an exit
interview. Information regarding Federal requirements and the specific dates for
completion will be sent directly from the Student Aid Office.

17. Full payment of any and all outstanding charges any payment made after
April 15, 2017 must be with cash, money order or certified check. Reminders to this
effect will be sent via e-mail approximately one month prior to this date. No
personal checks can be accepted after this date. The only exception would be any
hospital charges (patient related). All students who have any balances due, with
the exception of hospital charges, will be notified by the bursars office via e-mail
starting April 1.

AAMC Graduation Questionnaire
Completion of the AAMC Graduation Questionnaire, although no longer a
requirement for graduation, is highly encouraged so we may learn about
your educational experience as a medical student in the College of
Medicine. You can log into this single questionnaire using your AAMC ID
number.

PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT STUDENT


GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Requirements for graduation are formulated by the College of Medicine and are strictly adhered to by the Physician Assistant Program.

Graduation Requirements for the Physician Assistant Students include the following:
Satisfactorily completing all requirements in the specified curriculum and in good academic standing;
Attainment of good professional standing;
Enrollment in the program for the time period specified by the professional accrediting body, if applicable;
Successful passage of a summative experience and final evaluation;
Recommendation for graduation by the faculty of the specific program and the general faculty;
Satisfaction of all financial obligations to Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine and Penn State University.
Follow the approved course of study, satisfactorily completing all courses within the professional component;
Complete all courses with a cumulative 3.00 average, with no course or rotation below a C or low pass. ; A grade of F in
any course or rotation does not meet this standard. Students can appeal to repeat any failed course and the program has the
discretion as to how (and if) the student is permitted to retake this course. The program may require that the student step out
of the program for up to one year the time at which the course is repeated.
Repeat, as approved, and earn a minimum grade of C for any required course or rotation in the program for which a grade
of F was earned;

The grading of our courses is consistent with the grading utilized in the College of Medicine and all 700 level courses at Penn State
University. The following lists the final course grade, the translated GPA grade, and the quality point assignment to this course
