Greetings from the Wayne County Executive

Thank you for joining us at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African

American History for A Celebration of the Afro-American Sports Hall of
Fame & Gallery.

Founded by Elmer Anderson and Art Finney in 1982, the Afro-American

Sports Hall of Fame & Gallery was a first-of-its-kind exhibition to honor
trailblazing black athletes. Their efforts ensured the stories of these
athletic heroes would not be forgotten. This includes the Negro Leagues
greats who took the field before Jackie Robinson integrated the Major
League Baseball 70 years ago this month.

Today, 35 Negro Leagues greats are enshrined in the Baseball Hall of

Fame in Cooperstown and Negro Leagues days are regular events at
Major League ballparks. Before such honors became the norm, Elmer
Anderson and Art Finney worked to promote and protect the legacy of
these great athletes. Its said that history is told by the winners. When
Messrs. Anderson and Finney dared to tell this history, they declared a
victory for athletes of all sports who challenged claims they were second
class because of their race.

For many years, Wayne County was proud to provide a home to this
unique collection at the old County building on Randolph. We are proud
tonight, through the efforts of the Wayne County Council for the Arts,
History and Humanities and Mr. Andersons sister, Sharon Hasan, to
facilitate its transfer to the Wright Museum.

I hope you enjoy this evenings program and thank you again for helping
us continue the legacy of the Afro-American Sports Hall of Fame and
Gallery.

Sincerely,

Warren C. Evans
Wayne County Executive

History of the Afro-American Sports Hall of Fame & Gallery
In 1977, Elmer Anderson, an autoworker and semi-pro baseball player, approached Art
Finney, the editor of the UAW Local 163 newspaper, with a simple idea: Someone should write
a story about the former Negro Leagues stars working in metro Detroits auto plants.
That same year, the National Baseball Hall of Fames Special Committee on the
Negro Leagues disbanded after electing just nine players for enshrinement
in Cooperstown.
Please
With much of this critical baseball history at risk of being lost to the passage of time,
dont let
Mr. Anderson and Mr. Finney set out to tell the story of the Negro Leagues greats.
They traveled to Ashland, Ky. for the 1981 Negro Baseball Reunion and met with the
our dream
legendary players like Satchel Paige and Cool Papa Bell. Inspired, they expanded die
their vision to honor these legends with a full-fledged Hall of Fame covering all -Satchel Paige to
Elmer Anderson
sports.

The Afro-American Sports Hall of Fame & Gallery was founded on Jan. 9, 1982 with an
organizational meeting where Mr. Anderson was named as the Hall of Fames founder and
Mr. Finney was named co-founder. Ron Teasley, a former professional ballplayer and Detroit
Northwestern coach, served as their first president. Throughout 1982 and 1983, the Hall held
several fundraisers including an Old Timers Game at U of D Stadium. Later, an Afro-All Stars
team was formed to play a series of fundraising games to help support the Hall of Fame.

On Sept. 13, 1986, the Afro-American Sports Hall of Fame & Gallery inducted its first class:
Messrs. Anderson and Finney, Detroit Lions star Dick Night Train Lane, Detroit Pistons
coach and scout Will Robinson, and the legendary Joe Louis. Future induction classes
included greats like Jackie Robinson, Althea Gibson, and Sugar Ray Robinson.

The Hall of Fame was publicly displayed on the

fourth floor of the old Wayne County Building
until county government moved in 2009. Today,
36 years after Satchel Paiges plea to Elmer
Anderson, public awareness of the Negro Leagues
lives on and continues to grow.
The Afro-American Sports Hall of Fame & Gallery
is now part of the Charles H. Wright Museum
of African-American Historys collection to be
preserved and shared forever.
