3. Wind loads
3.1 Basic Values:
Vb = = Cdir Cseason Vb,0 (EN 1991-1-4 4.2)

Where:

Vb basic wind velocity

Cdir directional factor

Cseason seasonal factor

Vb,0 fundamental value of the basic wind velocity

Fundamental value of the basic wind velocity (see European wind map):

Fig 1.4 Belgian National Annex to EN 1991-1-4 (wind)

Vb,0 = 24 m/s (for Liege - Belgium) (Belgian National Annex to EN 1991-1-4 (wind))

For simplification, the directional factor Cdir and the seasonal factor Cseason are in
general equal to 1.0

Vb = 24 m/s

3.1.1 Basic Velocity Pressure

qb = x pair x Vb2 (EN 1991-1-4 4.5 eq. 4.10)

where:

air = 1.25 kg/m (air density)

qb= 0.5 x 1.25 x 262 = 16.25 N/m2

3.1.2 Peak Pressure

qp(z) = (1 + 7 Iy (z)) x x p x Vm (z)2 (EN 1991-1-4 4.5, eq. 4.8)

Calculation of Vm(z)

Vm(z) mean wind velocity

Vm(z) = Cr(z) x Co(z) x Vb

Where:

Co(z) is the orography factor

Cr(z) is the roughness factor

Information on Co may be given in the National Annex. If the orography is accounted for
in the basic wind velocity, the recommended value is 1.0

Cr(z) = kT x ln(z/z0) for zmin < z < zmax

Cr(z) = Cr ( zmin ) for z < zmin

Where:

kT is the terrain factor, depending on the roughness length z0 calculated using

KT = 0.19 x (z0 / z0,II)0.07

Taking Terrain Category III from EN 1991-1-4:2005 Table 4.1 - Terrain categories and
terrain parameters

Where,
Z0,II = 0.05 (terrain category II) (EN 1991-1-4 4.3.2 Table 4.1)

z0 is the roughness length = 0.3 m

Zmin is the minimum height = 5 m

Zmax is to be taken as 200 m

Here zmin < z < zmax

So, Cr(z) = KT x ln (z/zo)

KT = 0.19 x (z0 / z0, II)0.07 = 0.215

Cr(z) = 0.215 x ln (5.7/0.3) = 0.634

Calculation of Iv(z)

Iv(z) turbulence intensity

Iv = k1/(Co(z) x ln(z/z0)) for zmin < z > zmax (EN 1991-1-4 4.4 eq. 4.7)

Iv = Iv (zmin) for z < zmin

Here zmin < z < zmax

So, Iv = k1/(Co(z) x ln(z/z0))

Where:

K1 is the turbulence factor recommend value for K1 is 1.0

Iv (z) = 1/ (1 x ln (5.7/0.3)) = 0.34

Vm = Cr(z) x Co(z) x Vb = 0.634 x 1 x 24 = 15.22 m/s

qp(z) = (1 + 7 Iv (z)) x x p x Vm (z)2

= (1 + 7x0.34) x 0.5 x 1.25 x 15.222 = 0.489 KN/m2

3.2 Wind Pressure on Surfaces

For duopitch canopies able 7.4b - Recommended values of external pressure
coefficients for duopitch roofs. (From 7.2.5 Duopitch roofs EN 1991-1-4)

For Roof angle 20o

e = b or 2h Whichever is smaller

e = min (8.7, 2 x 5.7 = 11.4) = 8.7 m

Fig 1.5 Key for Duopitch Roofs

Table 1.1 Recommended values of external pressure coefficients for duopitch roofs
By interpolation the coefficients are

F: Cpe = -1.2 qpe = -0.587 KN/m2

G: Cpe = -1.3 qpe = -0.636 KN/m2

H: Cpe = -0.67 qpe = -0.328 KN/m2

I: Cpe = -0.5 qpe = -0.244 KN/m2

3.3 Calculation of Wind Pressure by Wind Interactive

Specification of properties of structure to calculate the wind forces.

Fig 1.6 Wind Interactive Structures Properties

Fig 1.7 Structure Exposed Surfaces to Wind

For us here surface (3) roof is of concern.

Fig 1.8 Tributary Area of Coefficients on the Roof Top

Fig 1.10 Pressure coefficient

Here coefficient F, G, H, I are of concern which are for roof surface.

The Manual Calculation and the software (wind Interactive) both gives the same results.

To apply the Coficcient distribution to the pressure of wind iver the roof surface Mean
Pressure coefficient is also calculated by the the software (Wind Interactive)

Cpe, 10 mean = -0.64

Determination of CsCd (1) cscd may be determined as follows: (EN 1991-1-4 6.2)

a) For buildings with a height less than 15 m the value of CsCd may be taken as 1.

b) For facade and roof elements having a natural frequency greater than 5 Hz, the value
of CsCd may be taken as 1.

c) For framed buildings, which have structural walls and which are less than 100 m high
and whose height is less than 4 times the in-wind depth, the value of CsCd may be
taken as 1.

d) For chimneys with circular cross-sections whose height is less than 60 m and 6,5
times the diameter, the value of CsCd may be taken as 1.
Fw = Cs x Cd x Cpe x qpe = 1 x (-0.64) x 0.489 = 0.313 KN/m2 (EN 1991-1-4 5.3 eq. 5.3)

This wind load is applied on the Model of structure in SAP2000.

4. Snow Loads
General Snow loads on the roof should be determined as follows:

s = i ce cz sk (EN 1991-1-3 5.2.2 eq.5.1)

where:

i is the roof shape coefficient

ce is the exposure coefficient, usually taken as 1.0

ct is the thermal coefficient, set to 1.0 for normal situations

sk is the characteristic value of ground snow load for the relevant altitude.

Roof shape coefficient EN 1991-1-3 5.3 Table 5.1

Shape coefficients are needed for an adjustment of the ground snow load to a snow
load on the roof taking into account effects caused by non-drifted and drifted snow load
arrangements. The roof shape coefficient depends on the roof angle.

0 30 1 = 0,8

Snow Load on the Ground

The characteristic value depends on the climatic region. For a site in Belgium (Liege)
the following expression is relevant:

Sk = 0.164(z)-0.082 + (A/966) (EN 1991-1-3:2003 (E) Table C.1. Altitude - Snow

Load Relationships)

The zone as per the EN 1991-1-3:2003 (E) it lies in Central West Region with Z = 3

A is the Altitude from the Sea level its A= 175 m

Sk = 0.164(3) -0.082 + (175/966) = 0.59 KN/m2

Snow load on the roof

S = i ce cz sk = 0.8 x 1 x 1x 0.59 = 0.48 KN/m2

5. Distributed Roof Loads

Permanent load of roof covering Ge= 0.100 kN/m (Corrugated metal)

Purlins, finishing, insulation Gt= 0.100 kN/m Ge+Gt= 0.200 kN/m
