Em uma Manchester em acelerado processo de urbanizao e industria-
lizao, o sentimento de perda de contato com a paisagem natural era
amenizado pela possibilidade de estar, mesmo que por alguns minutos,
em uma verdejante paisagem dos Alpes. O efeito contramelanclico

Por volta da dcada de 1850 parecia haver uma perfeita fuso entre
as preocupaes com o realismo histrico e as apresentaes do Dio-
rama. No prefcio de um guia impresso para orientar o visitante no

Os empresrios afirmavam ainda que a iniciativa havia sido inspirada
no grande sucesso de um diorama composto por mltiplos painis in-
titulado "Correio terrestre para a ndia", exibido mais de 1.600 vezes,
tendo atingido um pblico de mais de 400 mil pessoas." Sabe-se ainda
que os painis do Diorama das campanhas de Wellington foram pintados
pelos proprietrios, Thomas Grieve, William Telbin e John Absolon; os
animais, por Alfred Corbould; e a batalha de Waterloo, com dois painis
que encerram a srie de 29, por George Danson e filhos. O Diorama
contava ainda com msica composta e arranjada por Rophino Lacy e com
descriptive lectures ministradas por J.H. Stocqueler. Na apresentao
figuram ainda agradecimentos a John Burnett pelos esboos do campo
de Waterloo, a Stocqueler por "informaes valiosas" sobre a ndia e o
Oriente e a Richard Ford pelos esboos feitos na Espanha. Esse ltimo
o mesmo que assina a autoria do guia e deve ser o responsvel pelos
longos textos explicativos que acompanham cada ilustrao represen-
tativa do Diorama. Os painis apresentam a biografia de Wellington
desde seu nascimento, passando por sua atuao na ndia, nas Guerras
Peninsulares, culminando, obviamente, na Batalha de Waterloo.
O trabalho de pesquisa e produo teria durado dois anos, nos quais:
