Vapor Withdrawal 5.7.4.2 (A) openings shall be equipped with either of the
following:
(1) A posi+ve shuto valve located as close to the container as prac+cal in
combina+on with an excess-ow valve installed in the container
(2) An internal valve
Valving Requirements as per NFPA 58

Liquid Withdrawal 5.7.4.2 (B) openings shall be equipped with an internal

valve that is hed for remote closure and automa+c shuto using thermal
actua+on where the thermal element is located within 5i of the internal
valve.
Valving Requirements as per NFPA 58

Vapor Inlet 5.7.4.2 (E) openings shall be equipped with either of the following:
(1) A posi+ve shuto valve located as close to the container as prac+cal in
combina+on with either a backow check valve or an excess-ow valve
installed in the container
(2) An internal valve
Valving Requirements as per NFPA 58

Liquid Inlet 5.7.4.2 (F) openings shall be equipped with either of the
following:
(1) An internal valve that is hed for remote closure and automa+c shuto
using thermal actua+on where the element is located within 5i of the
internal valve
(2) A posi+ve shuto valve that is located as close to the container as
prac+cal in combina+on with a backow check valve that is designed for
the intended applica+on and is installed in the container
Valving Requirements as per NFPA 58

Container openings 5.7.4.2 (I) that are not compa+ble with internal valves
shall be permihed to u+lize both an excess-ow valve installed in the
container and a valve complying with API Standard 607, Fire Test for Quarter-
Turn Valves and Valves Equipped with Non-Metallic Seats, with the following
features
(1) The valve shall be ac+vated either hydraulically or pneuma+cally and
shall fail in the closed posi+on
(2) The valve shall be equipped for remote closure and thermal actua+on
with a thermal element located within 5i of the valve

Transfer Area Requirements as per NFPA 58

Emergency Shuto Valves (ESVs) were rst mandated in the 1976 edi+on of
NFPA 58. The following three features must be incorporated in an ESV
5.12.12.3
(1) Automa+c shuto through thermal actua+on. The thermal element must
melt at no more than 212*F
(2) Ability to be manually shuto from a remote loca+on
(3) Ability to be manually shuto at the installed loca+on
Transfer Area Requirements
Transfer Area Requirements

6.11.4 At least one remote-shutdown sta+on for internal valves in liquid

service shall be installed not less than 25i or more than 100i from the liquid
transfer point
6.12.12.1 Each emergency shuto valve-shall have at least one clearly
iden+ed and easily accessible manually operated remote emergency shuto
device
6.12.12.3 The shuto device shall be located not less than 25i or more than
100i in the path of egress from the emergency shuto valve.
Typical ESV Installa+on Arrangement
New requirement for the
2017 edi+on of NFPA 58

Will require the use of a Passive Shut-O when the plant/facility provides the
hose for the unloading of MC330/MC331 Transports.
Must be able to stop the ow of product within 20 seconds without human interven+on in
the event of a complete hose failure
Compliance can be accomplished using a mechanical, pneuma+c, or electronic device or
any combina+on thereof.
