Prof. (E) Dato Dr Abdul Latifwas born in Kampung Sungai Kantan, Kajang, Selangor on UNISEL 2016
September 1, 1938. His father, Ibrahim Sheikh Ahmad was a farmer. He started his

career as a Veterinary Assistant at the Veterinary Office in Selangor. Later on, he was Bioteknologi
offered a scholarship by the Selangor state government in 1950 to pursue a Bachelors UNISEL Pacu Industri Sains Hayat melalui ICLRS 2016
degree in Veterinary Medicine at the East Pakistan Agricultural University in Pakistan for
six years. In 1969, he was offered a Fulbright Hays/East West Centre fellowship to
further his studies at the University of Hawaii for an MSc in microbiology.

Prof. (E) Dato Dr Abdul Latiff continued his studies in microbiology and went on to successfully graduate with a PhD
from the University of California, USA in 1976. Already having started a career with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)
during his studies abroad, he continued to serve as an academic at the university until 2002 before joining UNISEL in
2003. At UNISEL, he is also responsible for setting up the network for collaborative research and training with the
University of Cambridge, University of Manchester, Imperial College London, Bandung Institute of Technology and
Universitas Andalas, Indonesia.

During his service at UPM, he conducted research to develop a vaccine for Newcastle disease or also commonly
known as tetelo in Malay/Indonesian that affects many avian species. The findings from this research has informed and
advanced veterinary medicine and agriculture science in Malaysia tremendously. Prof. (E) Dato Dr Abdul Latif has also
served the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOSTI) where he established three biotechnology institutions and
collaborative programmes with the Massachusetts Institute Of Technology (MIT) in human resources development and
joint research.
