2. Also dieses Jahr war irgendwie das Jahr der Hochzeiten. Also, nicht bei mir, ich habe
nicht geheiratet, aber viele meiner Freunde haben dieses Jahr den Schritt vor den
Traualtar gewagt. Neben den typischen Bruchen, die es auch in vielen anderen
Lndern gibt, konnte ich dabei so einige besonders deutsche Traditionen miterleben.

3. Solch eine Tradition ist zum Beispiel der Polterabend. Der Polterabend findet am Tag vor
der Trauung statt. Gepoltert wird, indem Porzellan oder Tongeschirr vor dem Haus der
Braut zerschlagen wird. Das soll Glck bringen und bse Geister vertreiben. Glas oder
gar Spiegel drfen aber auf keinen Fall zerschlagen werden, denn das bringt Unglck.
Das Brautpaar muss dann am Ende die Scherben zusammen auffegen. Der Polterabend
ist eine sehr entspannte Feier, denn man kann leger gekleidet kommen und Geschenke
bringt man eigentlich auch nicht mit.

4. Ein weiterer lustiger Brauch ist die Brautentfhrung. Die ist vor allem in lndlichen
Gegenden Brauch. Bei einer Brautentfhrung wird die Braut auf der Hochzeitsfeier von
den Trauzeugen, Freunden, oder der Familie entfhrt. Sie verlsst mit der Gruppe
heimlich die Feier und zieht von einer Gaststtte zur nchsten. Der Brutigam muss der
Braut folgen. Er muss in jeder Gaststtte die Zeche zahlen und erhlt einen Hinweis auf
die nchste Gaststtte. In der letzten Gaststtte wartet dann die entfhrte Braut und der
Brutigam muss sie mit einem Lied oder einer anderen Tat auslsen.

5. Und auch nach der Feier erwartet das frischvermhlte Ehepaar eine berraschung. In
vielen Gegenden ist es Aufgabe von Freunden und Verwandten, die Wohnung des
Brautpaares mit kleinen Fallen zu prparieren. Zum Beispiel kann man die Wohnung mit
Luftballons fllen, berall in den Zimmern Wecker verstecken, die dann zu
verschiedenen Zeiten klingeln oder den Weg ins Schlafzimmer so versperren, dass das
Brautpaar nur hinein kommt, wenn es vorher einige Rtsel lst.

2. So this year was somehow the year of weddings. Well, not mine, I didn't get married, but
many of my friends walked down the aisle this year. Besides the typical traditions that
also exist in many other countries, I was able to witness some specifically German
traditions.

3. One such custom is, for example, the "Polterabend" ("noisy evening"). The Polterabend
happens on the day before the wedding. It's called the "noisy evening" because porcelain
or ceramic dishes are smashed in front of the house of the bride. This is supposed to
bring good luck and scare away evil spirits. Glass or mirrors definitely should not be
smashed, because that brings bad luck. The bride and groom have to clean up the pieces
together afterwards. The Polterabend is a very relaxed celebration, since you can dress
casual and you don't bring any gifts along.

4. Another amusing tradition is the kidnapping of the bride. This is usually a tradition in
countryside areas. In a bridal kidnapping, the bride will be kidnapped at the reception by
the wedding party, friends, or family. She secretly leaves the reception with this group,
and goes from one restaurant to the next. The groom has to follow the bride. In every
restaurant he has to pay the bill, and receives a clue about the next restaurant. Then the
bride waits in the last restaurant and the groom has to pay her ransom with a song or
other action.

5. And after the party, the couple also expects a surprise. In many areas, it's the task of
friends and relatives to set up some sort of prank in the apartment of the couple. For
example, they can fill the apartment with balloons, or hide alarm clocks everywhere that
ring at different times, or block the way to the bedroom so that the couple can only enter it
after they've solved some riddles.
