INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the Battlestar Ship Recognition Manual, your one stop for general technical
data for all the existing types of battlestars in the Colonial Ministry of Defenses Fleet.

Within these pages you will find the key technical points for the various classes to help you
become familiar with the finer points of each class and what made them the premier warships of
their time.

Learn how many vipers each carried, what powers them, how many guns they have and
what types of them. These pages will answer many of your basic questions and some of your not
so basic questions on propulsion, armaments, the all-important air wings, and so forth.

When you finish reading this manual there is a brief exam designed to test your compre-
hension and memory and to see if you have the stones to serve on or command a battlestar.

01:01:00 CLASS HISTORY

When they were signed, the Articles of Colonization did more than just unite the twelve
separate colony worlds into one unified confederation to fight the Cylons. They also ordered the
creation of the Colonial Ministry of Defense to coordinate the war effort, as well as ordering the
construction of what would become the backbone of the Colonial Fleet for decades to come: the
battlestar.
Each colony was required to contribute to the construction of one of these mammoth new
ships, at the time the largest any colonist had ever imagined. Construction of the first battlestars,
dubbed the Nova Class, was a tremendous undertaking, especially given that no one had con-
structed vessels of this size before. But with each colony contributing cubits, resources, and man-
power to the project the first battlestars took shape in what seemed like record time.
Each of these new battlestars were considered to be the most advanced and powerful
ships ever created by the colonies. They not only served as a defenders of the now-unified colo-
nies against their common enemy, the Cylons, but also as a source of pride for the colony they
represented.
The only battlestar ever constructed by the Colonial Fleet that was equipped with energy
weapons, the Nova Class was unique in the history of the Fleet. That uniqueness wasnt without
its cost, as the dangerous flaws of such armament became apparent. While the Nova Class Battle-
tars were adequate in one-on-one engagements with Cylon Basestars, the large amount of energy
required to power the ship and its weapons systems meant that Nova Class Battlestars could be
fairly easily overwhelmed by multiple attackers.
The twelve original Nova Class Battlestars served valiantly during the First Cylon war,
though the latter part of the war saw them relegated to a reserve force status. At the conclusion
of the First Cylon War, the surviving Nova Class battlestars were decommissioned, mothballed,
and placed in the inactive reserve fleet. Over time these ships were stricken from the fleets rolls
and sold for scrap.

ARES CLASS BATTLESTAR

10 CAPITAL SHIP REFERENCE MANUAL: BATTLESTARS

02:01:00 CLASS HISTORY

The Ares Class Battlestar was a stop-gap solution to the flaws discovered in the Nova Class
Battlestar. Not having the time or luxury of trying to design a whole new type of ship, it was de-
cided to retrofit those Nova Class Battlestars then under construction or waiting to begin construc-
tion.
All the energy weapons were removed and replaced with kinetic energy weapons. This not
only brought the ships power consumption levels to more tolerable levels, it actually served to
provide better offensive and defensive capabilities as well. In addition to changing the weapons of
the battlestars, the flight pods were reworked to provide through-pod flight decks. The alteration
of the flight pods actually provided space to add an additional two launch tubes per podwhich
now allowed the ship to launch an entire squadron of vipers simultaneously.
Due to the numerous changes made to the workings of the ship, even through the hull re-
mained essentially unchanged in size and appearance, it was determined to make the new bat-
tlestar its own classthus the Ares Class Battlestar was born.
There were 10 Ares Class Battlestars built before production shifted to the larger Columbia
Class, due to the change in Cylon tactics during the war. By the conclusion of the First Cylon War
only two Ares Class Battlestars were still in service. Both ships were decommissioned and placed
in mothball status in the in-active reserve fleet.

COLUMBIA CLASS BATTLESTAR

16 CAPITAL SHIP REFERENCE MANUAL: BATTLESTARS

03:01:00 CLASS HISTORY

Constructed in the latter half of the First Cylon War, the Columbia Class Battlestar was spe-
cifically designed to [hopefully] defeat the electronically invasive tactics of the Cylons. Though
only about 20% larger than the Nova Class Battlestars, the Columbia Class required four times as
many crew to operate. This increase in crew size was not merely because of the increased size of
her air wing, but due to the fact that the class computer systems were not networked. For many
this made the new battlestars seem almost like antique relics compared to the Nova Class.
As the First Cylon War continued, the colonies continued to build more ships of this class to
combat the newest Cylon weapon: the basestar. Able to hold its own against the Cylon ships, the
Columbia Class proved to be a resounded success and is believed by many, rightly or wrongly, to
be the catalyst that forced the Cylons to leave the colonies and sign the armistice.
One of the unique things about the Columbia Class Battlestar is the retractable flight pods,
necessary for FTL jumps. This was due in part to the internal construction of the ships, as they
were unable, structurally, to make an FTL jump with the pods extended.
By the end of the First Cylon War, of the original 35 Columbia Class Battlestars constructed
during the war, only 18 were still in service. These surviving battlestars, as well as the 17 built in
the decade after the war, formed the backbone of the new Colonial Fleet.
But technological advances soon meant that the Columbia Class would be eclipsed by
newer ships. At the time of The Fall and the start of the Second Cylon War, there were only 7 Co-
lumbia Class Battlestars still in service with the Colonial Fleet. Though faring slightly better than
their newer, more advanced, cousins against the corrupted CNP program, even these venerable
old veterans were no match for the Cylon onslaught.

tlestars became the backbone of the fleet.

ORION CLASS POCKET BATTLESTAR

22 CAPITAL SHIP REFERENCE MANUAL: BATTLESTARS

04:01:00 CLASS HISTORY

The first Orion Class Pocket Battlestar was commissioned six years after the start of the
First Cylon War. The still-fledgling Ministry of Defense had determined that it needed a ship capa-
ble to conducting reconnaissance deep in Cylon-controlled territory and were not willing to risk
any of the still-too-few battlestars on such endeavors as doing so would leave the colonies even
more vulnerable than they already were.
The Orion Class is the smallest class of ship to carry the designation battlestar, being
smaller even than many gunstars. Designed to carry minimal armament and only a half-squadron
of Vipers (though another half-squadron could be carried if the situation required), the Orion Class
was not designed to fight Cylon Basestars.
While Orion Class Battlestars can carry a very small number of Vipers, the ship does not
typically embark them as a standard compliment. Equipped with only two launch tubes, it is al-
most faster to let the others, if more than two Vipers are carried, to egress from the hangar under
their own power as opposed to reloading the launch tubes.
Using special hull materials and a specially-designed coating on its hull, the ships of the
Orion Class were nearly invisible to the DRADIS arrays at that time, except at close range, these
ships could get closer to enemy targets than other battlestars in order to gather vital information
for colonial forces. Because of their unique makeup and mission profiles, Orion Class Battlestars
often worked alone, though there were several instances of them being a part of a larger fleet.
In order to perform their designed mission, the Orion Class was equipped with a large an-
tennae array in order to gather SIGINT on Cylon forces. Due to interference with its performance,
the antennae array could not be painted with the same stealth coating as the hull, that along
with its size make it the weak-point in the battlestars ability to hide from DRADIS at medium- to
close-range.
Of the 20 Orion Class Pocket Battlestars constructed, only 5 survived the First Cylon War.
Two were demilitarized and sold to private interests and three were mothballed and placed with
the in-active reserve fleet in the boneyards.

MERCURY (BLOCK 01) CLASS

BATTLESTAR
28 CAPITAL SHIP REFERENCE MANUAL: BATTLESTARS

05:01:00 CLASS HISTORY

The successor to the Columbia Class Battlestar was the Mercury Class. A radical design de-
parture from the Columbia Class, the Mercury Class was nearly 24% larger than its immediate
predecessor. Instead of retractable flight pods and rounded edges, the new battlestar featured
fixed flight pods and a more angular appearance reminiscent of the Nova Class.
However, this new class of battlestar was radical in more areas than just its design; it
pushed the boundaries of the technological advances made in the previous two decades to the
limits and required that the colonial government relax its restrictions on computer networks. After
several months of debate, the government agreed and production on the Mercury Class began.
Each flight pod on the Mercury Class is equipped with two separate flight decks, with the
hangar deck and launch tubes sandwiched between them. This layout, combined with computer-
assisted landings, resulted in a faster small-craft recovery rate. In addition, the upper half of each
flight pod also has a section dedicated as a landing area for Raptors, allowing for a more rapid
transfer of personnel and supplies. The larger overall size of the ship, as well as the new-style
flight pods also allowed for an increase in the size of the air wing each Mercury Class battlestar
was able to embark.
As well as the larger air wing, the new battlestars were equipped with computer networks
which allowed for increased efficiency and function of ship operations as well as a reduced crew
compliment compared to the Columbia Class. The Mercury Class also fielded a heavier weapon
load-out, both in main guns and defensive batteries, than previous battlestar classes including the
addition of four heavy assault cannons in the bow.
In addition to newer computer and additional weapons, advances in metallurgy and engine
technology gave the Mercury Class a stronger hull and more efficient engines, utilizing eight sub-
light engines compared to the four used on the Columbia Class.
After the prototype ship proved its worth to the Quorum, the Ministry of Defense was au-
thorized to construct an additional 40 ships of the class over a ten-year period. During that dec-
ade, as more Mercury Class Battlestars were commissioned, the Ministry of Defense began making
plans to decommission the older Columbia Class Battlestars.

MERCURY (BLOCK 02) CLASS

BATTLESTAR
36 CAPITAL SHIP REFERENCE MANUAL: BATTLESTARS

06:01:00 CLASS HISTORY

During the 15 years the Block 01 Mercury Class Battlestar was constructed, the ships were
exceedingly popular, and coveted, assignments for members of the Colonial Fleet. But, nature ab-
hors a vacuum and technology has always been an ever-changing and, usually, advancing force.
So it was that at the end of the initially authorized construction run, the decision was made
to make some upgrades to the class, using technological advances that had come about in the
previous decade. And so the Block 02 Mercury Class Battlestar was authorized to began construc-
tion in 2029.
From the exterior there is no visible difference in the Block 01 and Block 02 Mercury Class;
the upgrades made were not that drastic. Improvements to the class computer networks provided
greater ease of function and coordination; in addition the Block 02 featured an improved Elec-
tronic Counter-Measures and Communications Suites. While still utilizing 8 sub-light engines, the
upgraded sub-light engines on the Block 02 Mercury Class provided greater, and more efficient,
thrust. Improvements were also made to the FTL Drives, allowing for a greater maximum jump
range.
These improvements actually led to greater space internally, which allowed for an increase
in size of the ships air wing and slightly larger crew spaces.
As more and more of the Mercury (Block 02) Class Battlestars came on-line, they quickly
eclipsed their Block 01 sisters as the most coveted assignments in the fleet.

BATTLESTAR
44 CAPITAL SHIP REFERENCE MANUAL: BATTLESTARS

07:01:00 CLASS HISTORY

The Valkyrie Class Battlestar was, like the Mercury Class, designed with state of the art
technology. However, where the Mercury Class was designed more around brute strength, the
Valkyrie Class was designed to be stealthy and fast. Not meant to be a front-line combatant, this
class of battlestars primary purpose was to conduct raids behind enemy lines, long-range recon-
naissance, and fast-strike operations.
Being no longer than the flight pod of a Mercury Class Battlestar, the Valkyrie Class is the
smallest class of battlestar produced and used by the Colonial Fleet since the last Orion Class was
retired at the end of the First Cylon War. Due to their size and mission, this class of battlestar has
a lighter kinetic-energy weapons load-out than previous battlestar classes. However, that is not to
say the Valkyrie Class doesnt pack a punch, as the class is equipped with a larger-than-standard
compliment of missiles.
Being smaller than her sister battlestars, the Valkyrie Class utilizes only four sub-light en-
gines, though gets a greater maximum jump range from her FTL drives for the same reason. Re-
flecting her class designed mission, these battlestars have a sharp, streamlined hull that help
mask her DRADIS signature. In addition, her hull is designed with a large number of sensors to
aid in reconnaissance and intelligence gathering missions.
While being smaller gives the Valkyrie Class Battlestar an advantage in certain situations, it
is not without its cost. In this case, the size of the ships air wing. Sporting two smaller flight pods,
this class carries an air wing approximately half the size of a Mercury Class. Flight operations are
also effected, as each flight pod only has three launch tubes for the ships Vipers. These flight
tubes are located on the underside of each flight pod and run parallel to the pod, as opposed to
perpendicular to it.

MERCURY II CLASS
BATTLESTAR
52 CAPITAL SHIP REFERENCE MANUAL: BATTLESTARS

08:01:00 CLASS HISTORY

One would have to be lying to say that the creation of the Mercury II Class Battlestar was
either a fortunate accident or some brilliantly devious planning on the part of the admiralty.
With the Mercury and Valkyrie Classes forming a potent and effective backbone for the
modern Colonial Fleet, the admiralty sought funding for a new class of battlestar to act as special-
ized command-and-control fleet flagships. This new battlestar would be approximately 50% larger
than the Mercury Class and carry some of the most advanced technology used by the colonies in
the past 60 years.
After much debate, the Quorum agreed to fund the new class; but only with restrictions.
First, the admiralty was only authorized to construct 4 of the new class, designated the Nova II
Class in honor of the first class of battlestars. Second, no prototype was authorized; the admiralty
was going to have to find another way to test the technology they wanted to use in the new class.
Eager to have the new ships, the admiralty quickly came up with a solution.
Their solution was to take one of the Block 02 Mercury Class hulls that had just begun con-
struction and transfer it to Caesarea Anchorage, the fleets newest high-security shipyard. There
the hull was extensively modified to accommodate the new equipment and construction was re-
sumed. The Battlestar Katana, the hull chosen as the test-bed for the Nova II Class, was con-
structed and launched in record time, quickly proving in its shakedown trials the worth of the new
technology. While originally a Mercury Class Battlestar, at her commissioning ceremony the admi-
ralty reclassified the Katana as a Mercury II Class, with the intent of using her as the basis for a
future class of battlestar to replace the Mercury Class.
While looking like any other Mercury Class Battlestar, the Katana is approximately 25%
larger. Her hull and armor plating use revolutionary metallurgy processes, making it the strongest
of any colonial battlestar while her upgraded weapons and fire-control systems give the Katana
the ability to effectively take on a large number of separate targets. The Katana is also equipped
with revolutionary new power-plants and enginesboth sub-light and FTLas well as double the
number of viper launch tubes as the Mercury Class and an extensively upgraded electronics suite.
The latter includes the most controversial of all the upgrades made: the ships computer network.
When first proposed for the Mercury Class, the re-introduction of computer networks was
highly controversial. What was proposed for the Nova II Class ignited a nuclear firestorm of de-
bate. While the First Cylon War was 40 years in the past, the cause of it was still remembered,
and reflected in many colonial legal statutes. The Katana has been equipped with a Virtual Intelli-
gence computer network, essentially one step away from the Artificial Intelligence that led to the
creation of the Cylons. While the creators of the VI program have expounded on the safeguards in
the system and the impossibility of it ever being able to gain sentience, as the AI had allowed the
Cylons to do, only time will tell if this is true.
With the destruction of a majority of the fleet in The Fall, including (it is believed) the two
Nova II Class Battlestars that had been constructed at that point, the Katana is the largest and
most advanced of the surviving colonial battlestars.

08:02:00 CLASS NOTES

Commissioned on 15 March 2040, the Battlestar Katana is the only representative of the
Mercury II Class, and as such is a unique and irreplaceable asset both for its combat ability and
the technological treasure-trove it provides to aid in the reconstitution of the devastated Colonial
Fleet.
