DISASTER READINESS AND RISK REDUCTION

TEACHING GUIDE

TOPIC / EXPOSURE AND VULNERABILITY AND CAPACITY

LESSON NAME
CONTENT The learners demonstrate understanding of Various elements that may be exposed to
STANDARDS hazards:
1. Physical
2. Social
3. Economic
4. Environmental .Vulnerability of each exposed element.
PERFORMANCE The learners conduct hazard hunts of exposed elements and propose corresponding
STANDARDS corrective actions for ones preparedness.
LEARNING The learners
COMPETENCIES 1. Enumerate elements exposed to hazards;
2. Explain the meaning of vulnerability;
3. Explain why certain sectors of society are more vulnerable to disaster than others;
4. Analyze why certain structures are more vulnerable to specific hazards than others;
5. Determine the elements that are exposed to a particular hazard;
6. Recognize vulnerabilities of different elements exposed to specific hazards; and
7. Differentiate among hazards, exposure, and vulnerabilities and give examples from actual
situations.
SPECIFIC Identify areas in the Municipality of Polomolok possible
LEARNING HAZARD areas through their respective barangays and purok.

DISASTER READINESS AND RISK REDUCTION
TEACHING GUIDE
a. who were vulnerable to disaster
b. Why were they vulnerable?;
c. Identify the hazard. The teacher prepares card sheet and
d. possible contributory effects that might lead pentel pen or crayon plus masking
to disaster tape.
e. Determine the elements that are exposed in
this particular hazard.
INSTRUCTION / DELIVERY: 45 mins teacher possible answers to elements
Day 1: (IS: Sharing reporting / discussion) exposed to hazards:
houses, animals, people, schools, trees,
a. Teacher will request the reports to discuss their government, culture, roads. Electricity,
report. water, etc.

Day 2: (IS: Group Discussion)

a. Review of day 1. Short summary of film and
class discussion. 5 mins
b. The teacher will proceed to module 3:
HAZARD (see separate teaching guide.)
c. The teacher will instruct the class to seat
according to their group.
d. The teacher will explain the concept of
vulnerability and EXPOSURE. 30 mins The teacher assumes that the students
e. The teacher will present the formula: are already assigned in particular
Hazard x vulnerability x EXPOSURE = DISASTER group. He will monitor/observed each
CAPACITY speaker/reporter and give rating.

PRACTICE:
Day 1: all reporting and summarizing the topic of
exposure and vulnerability
Day 2: finalizing weekend reports:
a. Fill up capacity report
b. Drawing up of map overlay:
1. Red color: hazard
2. Vulnerability overlay
3. Capacity overlay
Day 3: 45 MINS
a. Review of day 2.
Hazard x vulnerability x EXPOSURE = DISASTER
CAPACITY
b. REPORTING: Students will now identify the
vulnerable people and their exposure to danger.
They will submit recommendation to the class. 15

ENRICHMENT: (10 Minutes) The teacher will provide input

DAY 3: SUMMARIZING
1. Being vulnerable is not being stable. Any
outside force or combination of forces may put a
vulnerable situation in danger and eventually a
DISASTER.
2. The disaster risk of an area is influenced by
both possible HAZARDS & vulnerability of
exposed elements. if any of these elements are
overlooked, a collapse in the system may be
experienced eventually.
3. And these combination (HAZARD X
EXPOSURE X VULNERABLE) will determine the
level of disaster in the community.
4. High level of exposure will lead to high disaster
risk.
EVALUATION: :
1. Assignment: weekend interview The teacher will scan students work.
a. with purok leaders or any government
employees
b. Check all street for capacity building
materials
Day 2:
1. GRAPHIC OVERLAY: Submit graphic overlay
