MISSION STATEMENT MEMBERSHIP

Heritage of Pride works toward a future without discrimination where
all people have equal rights under the law. We do this by producing LGBT
Pride events that inspire, educate, commemorate, and celebrate our
diverse community.
STATEMENT OF INCLUSION
Heritage of Pride is a wholly volunteer-managed, non-partisan, tax-
exempt, not-for-profit corporation that organizes lesbian, gay, bisexual,
and transgender Pride events in New York City to commemorate and
celebrate the Stonewall Riots. These events are organized for and on
behalf of all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals and
groups, and all others who support the struggle for the liberation
of these communities. In the spirit of Stonewall, Heritage of Pride
welcomes the participation of all, regardless of age, creed, gender,
gender identification, HIV status, national origin, physical, mental or
developmental ability, race, religion, or sexual origin.
STATEMENT OF VISION
Heritage of Pride strives to empower individuals, groups, and our
community as a whole through the commemoration of our history, in
particular the Stonewall Riots of 1969. New York Citys Pride events
provide an opportunity to join together to celebrate our lives, take joy in
all that we have done, and honor all those who have helped make our
progress possible. The events provide a safe and affirming space in
New York City, while educating those both inside and outside our own
community. In creating these Pride events, we reaffirm the self-worth of
all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and all those who join
in the ongoing struggle for our civil rights.

LETTER FROM THE CO-CHAIRS
As Co-Chairs of Heritage of Pride, we learn about and meet some
amazing folks in the LGBT community here in New York City
like dedicated people at the NYC Administration for Childrens
Services who advocate for transgender/gender non-conforming
youth or hard-working individuals at SAGE who run the countrys
first full-time LGBT senior centers. Just a few short years ago,
such ideas were just dreams. Who would have thought that we
would find the resources to establish mainstream programs for
our community?
On one hand, we have a city agency recognizing the need to bet-
ter serve all children, and then making that happen. On the other
hand, we have an LGBT organization receiving funding from the
city and a major national corporation to enable seniors to have
a welcoming place to learn, grow, and share experiences. These
services started with a dream, buried deep in a thought and a
prayer, and were brought to fruition by courageous individuals
who knew that they could complete the dream.

What are your dreams?
To reduce LGBT teen suicide? Eliminate bullying in every place
it lurks? Outlaw conversion therapy? Create gender-neutral
restrooms in every public space? Reach true global marriage
equality?
Over the course of NYC Pride Week youll be exposed to people
working on these and other important efforts. We hope that you
will be inspired to take action to follow your own dreams. Wheth-
er you find your inspiration sitting on a blanket with your spouse
and children watching Finding Nemo at our Family Movie Night,
listening to a speaker at our Rally, dancing with wild abandon at
one of our dance events, or marching down Fifth Avenue with
thousands of your friends, we hope that you will take the next
step towards completing your dream.
As the home of the Stonewall Riots, many consider New York City
to be the birthplace of the LGBT rights movement. Each of you
play a part in fostering Stonewalls global legacy. As Co-Chairs,
we want to thank all of the committed people who continue to
make our events a focal point of the LGBT rights movement in
our country and around the world. We hope that all of you have a
wonderful time at NYC Pride and we look forward to your efforts

occurred one month after the Stonewall Riots in June 1969, when
500 people gathered for a Gay Power demonstration in Wash-

Thats right: worms, crickets, grasshoppers, and ants. Human

entomophagythe practice of eating insectsis one of the
growing trends of 2015. And for good reason.

According to a 2013 report released by the U.N.s Food and Agri-

culture Organization, insects are a sustainable source of protein
that uses a fraction of the water, land and other resources that
we put into livestock farming. The report also suggests that as
human populations rise, an increased reliance on insect farming
for protein, fat, and fiber has beneficial effects for the environ-
ment and global hunger.

Also, eating insects can be safe and healthy (despite Western

taboos), which is why over two billion people worldwide already
eat insects, sometimes as great delicacies. While you might not
see sauted silkworms in the organic section of Whole Foods just
yet, that doesnt mean the trend hasnt come to New York.

Take the BLACK ANT (60 Second Ave.), a Mexican restaurant

which has been receiving rave reviews for its diverse menu that
includes a number of authentic dishes featuring insects import-
ed weekly from a farm in Mexico. In addition to the aforemen-
tioned Tlayuda con Chapulines and guacamole, you could also try
Tacos Enchapulinados (shrimp tacos with a grasshopper crust).
Theres also a long list of spicy specialty tequila cocktails to help
you overcome those Western aversions.

AS WE NEAR A SUPREME COURT DECISION THAT WILL HOPEFULLY

RENDER MARRIAGE EQUALITY THE LAW OF THE LAND, BOTH
SUPPORTERS AND OPPONENTS ARE ASKING THE SAME QUESTION:
HOW WAS THE GAY RIGHTS MOVEMENT IN THE UNITED STATES ABLE
TO MOVE FASTER AND FARTHER THAN ANY PRECEDING CIVIL RIGHTS
MOVEMENT? MY ANSWER DRAWS ON A LONGSTANDING DEBATE IN
CONSTITUTIONAL LAW ABOUT THE NATURE OF DISEMPOWERED GROUPS.

In 1938, the United States Supreme Court stated that groups

were more likely to be disadvantaged if they were discrete and
insular minorities. Scholars have interpreted discrete to mean
visibly different and insular to mean geographically isolated.
The paradigm case: segregated Blacks.

In 1985, constitutional law professor Bruce Ackerman argued that

the Court had gotten it exactly wrong, maintaining that anonymous
and diffuse minorities were even more vulnerable, invoking gays
as a core example. Because gays were generally able to pass, he
contended, our search and mobilization costs were higher (hence KENJI YOSHINO IS THE

Because we are anonymous, gatekeeping mechanisms have
never worked against us as they have worked against racial
minorities or women. Gays have always populated all of societys
most powerful sectors, including the media, the military, the en-
tertainment industry, politics, and corporations. When it became
relatively safe to come out, gay people did so at the highest
levels of influencefrom Anderson Cooper to Tim Cook.
And because we are diffuse, we were already in close contact
with the folks we needed to persuade. Every extended family
in America has a gay family member, meaning that many gays
(though sadly not all) found an army of allies on the other side of
the closet doorfrom the Cheneys to the Portmans.
Ackermans thesis, then, is both right and wrong, depending
on whether the anonymous and diffuse group has achieved a
critical mass. So to complete the dream of gay equality, we need
to create that mass on a global scale.
Lest we get too heady about recent progress,
lets remember that the current landscape
remains grim. Some two-hundred countries
still ban same-sex marriage. Over seventy
criminalize same-sex conduct. At least eight
deem that conduct punishable by death.
But my hope and expectation is that change will happen as fast
if not fasterin the world as it has in the United States. Social
media, among other advances, have made national boundaries
much more porous, allowing us to express support and solidarity
across borders in ways previously unimaginable. Ideally, each
country will not have to reinvent the wheel, but will be able to
rely on a global critical mass. And when we reach that mass, an-
onymity and diffuseness will once move from being our greatest
weakness to our greatest strength.

The oldest of all Pride traditions is the annual Pride March. Since
1970, the first anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Riots, LGBT
people have gathered on the last Sunday in June to demand
equal rights and social acceptance and to celebrate our victories
and unique cultural traditions. In 1970, an estimated 2,000 peo-
ple walked 51 blocks through Manhattan chanting, Say it clear,
say it loud. Gay is good, gay is proud. And Pride was born.
In the years that followed, the March has grown and changed
in many ways. While we have much to celebrate 46 years after
Stonewall, in New York we will continue to call for liberation
from injustice of all people. With an audience that numbers in
the millions, we work hard to ensure that the March is an event
for our diverse population of LGBT peopleincluding youth,
transgender people, LGBT people of color, and moreto express
themselves freely and completely.

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
Once again, the March will kick off with an opening ceremony at
the starting line including the National Anthem and a moment
of silence for those we have lost to HIV/AIDS and anti-LGBT vio-
lence or suicide. For the second year, the Boy Scouts of America
will provide our color guard along with Fred Sargeant, a retired
police officer who participated in the first Pride March of 1970.
Look for the official NYC Pride Float, featuring key members of
the landmark marriage equality case due to be decided by the
Supreme Court in June. Well also be unveiling something big
weve been planning for an important upcoming anniversary.
We will have hours of entertaining floats, marching groups,
performers, and supporters joining uscheck nycpride.org for ad-
ditional line-up information. We anticipate having over 350 different
groups marching this year, making it one of the citys largest events.
Announcers will be located at the intersections of 36th St. & Fifth
Ave., 24th St. & Fifth Ave., 8th St & Fifth Ave., and Christopher &
Bleecker Sts. Groups stop to perform for our judges on Fifth Ave.
at 8th St.
WHERE TO WATCH
There are no bad places to watch the March. The expansive
sidewalks of Midtown along the Fifth Avenue portion of the route
offer more space for a casual viewer who only wants to watch
part of the day. The cozy, tree-lined streets of the West Village
have more charm, but are also more densely crowded.
Accessible seating is offered to people with mobility issues. To ob-

sitcom about two bickering old partners in London, Derek is an
openly gay actor who has been with his partner, Richard Clifford,
for 38 years. His extensive list of acting credits includes Last
Tango to Halifax, Grace of Monaco, The Kings Speech, The Golden
Compass, Gladiator, Gosford Park, Doctor Who, Frasier, The Bor-
gias, and he has starred in some of Shakespeares most iconic
roles on stage including Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth.
KASHA JACQUELINE NABAGESERA is the founder and
Executive Director of the LGBT rights organization Freedom &
Roam Uganda (FARUG). Since 1999, she has been one of the
foremost leaders of the LGBT movement in Uganda, where
homosexuality is illegal. She helped open Ugandas first bar for
LGBT people and in 2014 she helped organize the very first Pride
Festival in Uganda. A frequent speaker at international human
rights conferences, Kasha has been recognized numerous times
for her pioneering approach to stopping homophobia in her
home country and worldwide.

than 50 acting awards and hundreds of roles under his belt. He
is particularly well-loved for his roles as Magneto in the X-Men
films and Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films. Ian

J. CHRISTOPHER NEAL is originally from Detroit and now lives in
Brooklyn. Chris is a visual artist, educator, and the founder of the
upstart organization FluidBiDesign, committed to the psychologi-
cal, physical, and emotional health and well-being of all men, but
specifically men of African descent who conceive of their identi-
tiesinclusive of their sexuality, but not limited toas fluid. Its
central focus is in promoting open dialogue, awareness, compas-
sion, acceptance, increased knowledge, and understanding.

Gay and lesbian life in 19th century
America meant reading between the lines,
latching on to known code words to locate
a community buried deep under the main-
stream. But you may not have had to look
very far in the early 1890s to locate The
Slide (157 Bleecker St.), once one of New
Yorks most notorious and flamboyant
bars. We know of its existence primarily
due to the pearl-clutching reaction of
moral-minded New Yorkers. While you cant
trust police blotters and morality crusaders
to give an accurate depiction of what The
Slide was truly like, an attempt to peel
back the hyperbole provides a sight that
would rival the bawdiest gay bars of Hells
Kitchen. The Slide was a basement dive,
packed every night with men who fancied
male degenerates and the occasional
female looking for something outrageous.
Music, drinking, and laughter prevailed
until the early morning; female prostitutes
mingled with the boys to create what must
have been a dizzying stew of genders, the
air filled with cheap booze, wild sex (orgies
beyond description), and tunes banged out
on an old piano.
Newspapers described it as a fairy re-
sort. Men openly wore drag to the delight
of patrons, of which there were many,
according to one scandalized report,
one to three hundred people, most of

whom are males, but are unworthy the
name of men. Rouged and powdered
waiters sang filthy ditties into all hours
of the morning. The Slides most notable
patrons went by such names as Princess
Toto, Madam Fisher, Maggie Vickers,
Phoebe Pinafore, and Queen of the Slide.
Homosexual behavior of any stripe
would have been condemned in this era.
Such flagrant and open displays would
have been unthinkable then. The urges
displayed at The Slide were inhuman and
unnatural. The New York Evening World,
owned by Joseph Pulitzer, was perhaps
the most horrified, suggesting that Lon-
don, Paris or Berlin, with all their iniquity,
have nothing parallel [to] this sink of vice
and depravity. A bar today might be hon-
ored to be strapped with such description!
Such abandon could not be allowed to
exist for very long. Pulitzers paper went
on a vendetta against The Slide and other
Bleecker Street dives, and soon it was
permanently shuttered. But you couldnt
simply extinguish a scene as lively as that
of The Slide. Its crowd simply moved to a
place on the Bowery called the Excise Ex-

Touko Laaksonen, better known as Tom of Finland, is without
question one of the most impactful gay artists of the 20th century.
Though its taken nearly 25 years since his death, the art commu-
nity and the general public are finally starting to comprehend and
acknowledge the wide-reaching artistic importance and cultural
impact of his lifes work.
Laaksonens recognition and notoriety grew out of his late-1950s
contributions to Bob Mizers Physique Pictorial, the first all-nude,
all-male publication that was a leader in the so-called beefcake
magazine industry of the mid-1900s. In 1978 he had his first
gallery exhibition and by 1984 hed established the Tom of Fin-
land Foundation, realized with the help of Durk Dehner. Though
Laaksonen passed away in 1991, his work has continued to live
on, thanks in large part to the foundation and the tireless work of
its friends and supporters.
In 2006 the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City ac-
cepted five Tom of Finland drawings as part of a much larger gift
from The Judith Rothschild Foundation. Highlighting the gravity of
Toms work as part of the gift, Harvey S. Shipley Miller, trustee of
the foundation, noted, As an artist he was superb, as an influence
he was transcendent.

Space in New York City is planning the first comprehensive
survey on the work of Tom of Finland, including more than 140
drawings, rarely seen gouaches from the 1940s, over 600 pages
of collages, and some early childhood drawings.
Tom of Finland: The Pleasure of Play will be the first exhibition to
examine, analyze, and present the historic role that his art plays
in addressing and transgressing stereotypes of gender, sexuality,
race, class, and power relations.
This exhibition is a vital exploration of one mans prolific work.
His interpretation and rethinking of the foundation of masculinity
has permanently influenced and shaped modern gay culture.

casket. In another scene that is equally
poignant and hilarious, Young Alison spots
an old school butch and launches into
essentially a love song that hits its most
memorable and soaring note on the detail
of her keysher ring of keys!
Most recently workshopped at the Public
Theatre off-Broadway, the show has been
reimagined for an arena-style layout,
which brings even greater emotional
intimacy to the story.

ON-ONE WITH FORMER NFL PLAYER WADE DAVIS ABOUT THE DIFFI-
CULTIES OF GROWING UP, COMING OUT, THE STATE OF LGBT ATHLETES,
AND HOW HES SHAPING THE FUTURE OF THE SPORTING INDUSTRY.

Wade Davis grew up in Shreveport, Lou-
isiana. Wade Davis loved football. Wade
Davis is gay.
As an adolescent he played pickup games
with neighboring kids, tested and honed
his incredible speed on the field, and
learned from rousing games of Smear
the Queer that to be gay is to be a target.
Twenty to thirty kids, guys and girls,
would throw the football up in the air,
the queer picks up the ball and runs with
it and everyone tries to smear them. It
informed my thinking of what you did to
those that identified as queer, says Davis.
As his love of football drove him forward
in life, fear held him back. Creating an
illusion of masculinity, he slipped into the
role of high school bully. To survive high
school, Davis explains, I created an invis-
ible shield to keep others from seeing the
real me, who was suffering a lot of pain.
Wade went on to play football at the
collegiate level and his undeniable
talent got him transferred to a Division
I college in Utah, hiding from his true
self by doubling his commitment to a
sport he loved immensely. Football
was definitely a hiding place. Out on the
playing field with my teammates, I didnt
think about being gay because I was

doing something I loved and was focused.
It provided that distraction. Off the field,
Wade was forced to continuously confront
the man hed guarded behind a carefully
crafted illusion. His experiences are
typical of the coming-to-terms arc most
gay men travel: crushing on someone
you shouldnt, getting close to someone
without them figuring you out, feeling
aroused at all the wrong times. No one
was talking about being gay in Utah...so it
was easier for me to hide, but I did have
my first gay experience there...a very
secret rendezvous type of relationship.
Wades football career didnt stop with
college ball; he went pro in 2000 as a cor-
nerback for the Tennessee Titans. Wade
almost immediately felt more at ease, a
mixture of his own personal growth and
a strong, supportive coaching staff. It
depends more on the leadership, and [for-
mer] Tennessee Titans Coach Jeff Fisher
was very clear about [negative] language,
bullying and hazing. Other teams, where
the coach wasnt as intentional about
those conversations, the language was
more pervasive.
At the professional level, pressure to alter
the culture has been coming from all
sides: fans, teams, leagues, and retired

players. Fans have made LGBT athletes
jerseys top selling products. Major
League Baseball is making the effort via
Billy Bean, their newly appointed Inclu-
sion Ambassador, who hopes to institute
a league-wide culture of acceptance. The
New England Patriots, San Francisco
Giants, and Tampa Bay Rays have signed
legal briefs calling for the Supreme Court
to strike down same-sex marriage bans.
While the tide may not have totally turned,
Wade agrees the conversation is finally
gaining critical momentum. All sports
leagues are copycat businesses, so when
one team [or league] does it, others say,
Well why arent we doing this, we dont in the sporting world and how words and
want to be the last ones to sign on.
Wade came out publicly in 2012. He
attributes his decision to an opportunity
he had, meeting students at New Yorks
Hetrick-Martin Institute. These teens
held their heads high and stayed true
to themselves in spite of bullying and
societal expectations. Meeting these
heroes and sheroes that have unadul-
terated courage gave me strength. Like,
Wow, this 14-year-old out trans kid has
everything to lose. What am I so afraid
of? This experience had a profound
effect on Wade and he began to focus his
energies on youth advocacy. Advocacy
work starts with young kids. They have to
grow up knowing that they can be out in
high school or out in college. If youre not
out in those spaces, its even harder when
you reach professional life.
Though now retired from football, Wade is
still very much in the game. He educates
high school, college, and professional
teams as the Executive Director of the You
Can Play project, working to create an in-
clusive culture for athletes by fighting the
pervasiveness of sexism and homophobia
in sports. Our goal is to get people to un-
derstand the experience of LGBT athletes
actions can marginalize and isolate them.
The visibility and optics matter because
there are young kids right now that can
look at a Jason Collins, a Brittney Griner,
and say, I exist. I am possible.
We are possibility models.
We [LGBT] exist in sports.
You are not the only one.
You can be gay. You can be
trans. You can be accepted.
You can do it.
 EXPRESSION. PRIDE.

All proceeds from the Dance on the Pier benefit New York Citys
Official Pride events and local LGBT community organizations.
Dance on the Pier is NYC Prides largest fundraising and commu-
nity support initiative. The events production committee awards
over $45,000 in grants to LGBT and LGBT-friendly nonprofits
and community organizations each year. The event also supplies
NYC Pride with critical operating revenue and pulls in countless

APPLE IS HOPPING BACK IN
THE GAME WITH AGRICULTURAL
INNOVATION AND CRAFTY TAPS

LIKE BRONX BREWERY.
One cannot begin talking about beer in
America without mentioning New York
City. The Dutch West India Company
started the first brewery in what is now
Lower Manhattan back in 1612. From
then on, immigrants from the Nether-
lands, England, and Germany arrived,
cementing the strength of brewing in the
city until 1976, when the last producing
brewery closed. But what happened to
such a strong industry?
Largely attributable to the feverish
growth of brewing in the area, by the late
1800s New Yorks booming hop indus-
try had reached peak acreagearound
40,000 acresas the state boasted
more than 90% of U.S. hop production.
Sadly, boom turned bust as the crops
were effectively eradicated, the result of
infestation and disease. Cornell Co-
operative Extension (CCE) of Madison
County, the agricultural program trying

to resurrect hop production in New York,
explains, There were several pests that
had a devastating effect on hops in the
19th century, including the hop aphid and
two funguses called downy mildew and
powdery mildew. Hop aphids and downy
mildew were disastrous to hop growers
because there was little information on
their management and even fewer tools.
Fast forward over 100 years and the Em-
pire State is recultivating her once mas-
sive hop industry. CCE notes, Now, with
the strong demand for craft beer, there
is a resurgence of hop production in New
York. With the help of some state funding,
Cornell University and CCE are conducting
variety trials, working on sprayer technol-
ogy, and providing up-to-date information
to growers to help them produce the best
quality hops for New York breweries.
The rebirth and growth of New Yorks hop
crop has led to explosive growth in New
York Citys revitalized and burgeoning
community of brewers. The NYC Brewers
Guild, a local industry cooperative, has
grown to 17 members in just a few years.

BREWERY. Chris Gallant, General Manager,
believes, Craft beer has gotten too serious.
Beer isnt something you overanalyze alone
in your basement; it's something to taste,
discuss, and shareand most importantly
enjoyamong friends. That belief drove
Gallant and a group of friends to grow into
their own brewhouse in the Bronx. Starting
off as tenant brewers, carting kegs of
their infamous Pale Ale from Connecticut
to NYC in a used Red Bull truck, the team
now boasts four seasonal brews and four
year-round brews, as well as a growing
list of unique offerings aged in a variety of
barrels: bourbon, brandy, wine, and even
mezcal and gin.
Whats on tap right now? Just in time for
the warmer weather ahead, their staff
favorite Summer Pale Ale is currently in
the works. Making use of plump British and
American two row malts with still-num-
bered-havent-been-named-yet experimen-
tal hops, this liquid gold goes through a dry
hop process with dried lemon peels adding
a strong citrus nose and a nice crisp finish.

STORY RECEIVING NATIONAL ATTENTION. HOW DID YOU GET
YOUR START AND CONVERT A HOBBY INTO A BUSINESS?
It all started back when I was studying architecture in college and
grad school. One of my professors said my mock-up looked like a
layer cake, and I was like, Yeah, it does! So, obviously, I brought a
layer cake to class. I started calling it farchitecture for food + ar-
chitecture. It was a fun way to talk about the subject, and I knew it
could be useful for introducing people to architecture and design.
While working my first job, after grad school, I started making
ice cream sandwiches and naming them after famous architects.
This was effectively the foundation for what would become
Coolhaus. I met my partner, Freya Estreller, during this time. She
was a tremendous help with our financial model and business
operations. We bought a broken down postal van on Craigslist,
made our way to Coachella, and returned home to more press
and fans than we could have imagined!
COOLHAUS ESSENTIALLY WENT VIRAL FOLLOWING YOUR
COACHELLA DEBUT. HOW HAS SOCIAL MEDIA CONTINUED TO
IMPACT YOUR GROWTH?
Social media was a major, major factor for our growth. It was
important for letting people know of our location, but its also
been great for promoting our retailers. Fans are always asking
where they can find our products, and we get to interact with
them and promote sales.
SO YOUVE NOW MOVED BEYOND JUST FOOD TRUCKS TO
ACTUAL DISTRIBUTION OF PRODUCTS TO RETAIL STORES.
HOW HAVE YOU MANAGED SUCH A RAPID EXPANSION?
The business grew faster than we could have imagined, and
before we knew it, we were trying to manage an entire team of
people. Several components of our business model have allowed
us to expand. One was the model of scalability. We started using
co-packers right away to make our product to specthis way we
could grow without having to purchase new equipment at every
stage, and we werent on the hook from a cash flow perspec-
tive with raw materials. We also started to scoop the sammies
made-to-order at retail, which became a big part of the cus-
tomer experience and playfulness of the brand. Also, the trucks

themselves are a very affordable and nimble retail model and are
great for both vending and catering. Additionally, I think launching
at Coachella, an event with huge exposure and media following,
really catapulted us early on. It became a key part of our heritage.
YOUR SCALABILITY HAS ALLOWED YOU TO GROW BEYOND
THE FOOD TRUCK, BUT IS IT STILL THE CORNERSTONE OF
YOUR BUSINESS OR HAS ANOTHER METHOD SURPASSED IT
IN SALES?
I think the food truck industry has come to represent more of
a strategic purpose (which is often marketing) than a singular
business to live and die by. The trucks are best utilized when
they plug into a larger growth strategy. That is how both small
brands that are growing and big brands that are looking to be
innovative are using them.
The distribution business officially surpassed the truck and
brick-and-mortar business in 2014 and is slated to double this
year. Our truck business grows about 5% every year.
WITH COOLHAUS BASED IN MILD-WEATHERED LOS
ANGELES, HOW HAVE EAST COAST WINTERS IMPACTED
YOUR SALE PROJECTIONS?
The East Coast winters mean the truck business there is essential-
ly shut down, but actually the wholesale distribution business stays
pretty steady. People still buy a lot of ice cream from grocery stores
and celebrate with it for the holidays. Ice cream is really more of
a comfort food than necessarily a warm weather food. Boston is
actually the highest ice cream consumption per capita!
WHAT IS YOUR BUSINESS DREAM? WHAT IS NEXT IN
COMPLETING THE DREAM FOR COOLHAUS?
On a personal level, I would love to continue to start and grow more
businesses, which I think will always be consumer packaged goods.
I would also love to have an investment fund where Freya and I
can foster business development and growth for other women-run
businesses. As far as Coolhaus is concerned, we really want it to be
the Ben & Jerrys of our generationa household name that can be
easily accessed without sacrificing quality or integrity.

the Strip, but you wont be far from

restaurants eclectic soul-food-inspired
menu and the charming outdoor patio
space offer a great way to experience
the desert air rather than the recycled
oxygen at the casinos.
If youd rather stick to the casinos, KOI

HOW DID YOU COME TO BE INVOLVED IN THE
EAST COAST TWO SPIRIT SOCIETY?
I went to my first Two Spirit gathering six years ago; thats when I
embraced the term and identified with it. I had been living my life
as a gay man and that was the first time I didnt have to choose
between being gay and Native American. They were both included
in that term: Two Spirit.
WHATS YOUR HERITAGE?
Im from the Cheyenne River Reservation, part of the Sioux
Nation. Thats in La Plante, South Dakota. I graduated and moved
to the Northwest for a while, lived in Las Vegas, then eventually
came to New York. I was working in the fashion industry and
thats what brought me to New York in 2005. Today I work for an

TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE EAST COAST TWO SPIRIT SOCIETY.
The original organization that founded and started here in New
York City was called WeWha and Barcheeamp. Then, 10 years
ago there was the Northeast Two Spirit Society, and now weve
restructured and have a new direction, so we are now the East
Coast Two Spirit Society. We serve the LGBTQI Native American
and First Nations community; we increase the visibility of our
Two Spirit identities. We do presentations, have weekly powwow
dance practices, host a gathering every year in upstate New
York, and participate in many Pride marches like Rochester,
Philadelphia, and New York City.
WHAT CHALLENGES ARE UNIQUE TO THE NATIVE AMERICAN
TWO SPIRIT COMMUNITY?
One of our goals with the Two Spirit Society is to reclaim our
place of honor in Native American communities. One of the
impacts colonization had on us, especially residential boarding
schools that strictly divided men and women, is that it erased a
place for Two Spirit people to exist. The work we do is to reclaim
our role and function within our communities.
Theres a divide between traditionalists and the colonized Native
Americans who try to exist in todays world and still identify as
Native American. We align ourselves with the traditionalists.
In every Native American nation there is a wordand its a
different word for eachfor Two Spirit people, which means they
were a part of the community. Some tribes had four genders,
some had six genders; so long before Stonewall, before the LGBT
movement, we were already living as part of our communities,

our tribes, and were fully accepted. We had very important roles
like healers, matchmakers, counselors, or medicine people.
We coined the term Two Spirit to be intertribal because there
are so many languages. But as a result of colonization, we arent
as accepted as we once were. We have high rates of suicide
among our LGBT Native youth, along with other challenges like
drugs and alcohol. There is a lot of isolation and separation from
community without our Two Spirit roles and a lot of intergen-
erational trauma; being made to feel isolated from a role in the
community can be very difficult.
We always say that part of the purpose in reclaiming our role
within our nations is repairing our sacred hoop of life, which
is broken and will never be mended or healed until Two Spirit
people are accepted back into the circle.
TELL ME ABOUT THE CLOTHING YOURE WEARING.
This is the traditional regalia of the grass dancers, people who
would come into a new area on the prairie and flatten the grass
so that others could move in. The fringe represents blades of
grasswhen we dance we bend and sway like a blade of grass.
Im carrying a basket and a bow, which are part of a traditional
Two Spirit ceremony among the Mojave. The bow symbolized
choosing to walk the way with men and the basket is choosing
to walk the way with womenits a choice that all people have.
There was no judgement to your choice because we listened to
our dreams; they were visions or instructions from the ancestors
or creator, the Great Spirit.

AFTER ITS WORLD PREMIERE AT THE SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL, INDIE FILM TANGERINE IS COMING TO
NEW YORK CITY THIS SUMMER WITH A SURPRISINGLY ENGAGING STORY OF TWO TRANSGENDER SEX
WORKERS, AN ARMENIAN CAB DRIVER, A CHEATING PIMP/BOYFRIEND, AND THE MANY DENIZENS OF
WEST HOLLYWOODS LOWER CLASS.

The opening scene of the film is deceptivethe acting a little stilt-

ed. The transgender actresses Mya Taylor (Alexandra) and Kitana
Kiki Rodriguez (Sin-Dee) share a donut on Christmas Eve. The pace
is slow and the dialogue is a bit forced as exposition drips out. We
learn that Sin-Dee is back from a 28-day stint in jail and her best

friend, Alexandra, is catching her up on the news from the block.

All of that falls away the moment Sin-Dee, having learned her
boyfriend Chester (James Ransone from The Wire) has cheated
on her with a cisgender woman storms out of the donut shop and
begins fuming down the street, accosting people along the way
for more information about Chester and the woman hes been
seeing. For the next 80 minutes Rodriguez and Taylor fully inhabit
and sell their roles as their stories weave in and out of each
other. While Alexandra tries to make some money on the street

and drum up an audience for her Christmas Eve show, Sin-Dee

tracks down Dinah (Mickey OHagan)the fish who slept with
Chesterand physically drags her around town.

The third star of the film, Karren Karagulian, plays Razmik, an

Armenian taxi driver dealing with both the ridiculous and routine
of transporting a series of entertaining characters around Los
Angeles on Christmas Eve. The movie eventually works his story
into that of the trans sex workers and brings all the major char-
acters together in an explosive confrontation at the same donut
shop where it all started; here, the Armenian immigrants, sex

workers, pimps, and beleaguered donut shop employee all have

to deal with the consequences of infidelity and betrayals.

The most amazing technical aspect of the film? It was filmed en-
tirely using the iPhone 5s with an anamorphic lens attached. We
realized it could be good for shooting first-time actors because
it wouldnt intimidate them and the extras we were grabbing
off the street, said Sean Baker, Director. It allowed us to shoot
clandestinely. The result is a very immersive sense of the com-
munity and intimate shots of confrontation in crowded spaces.

American household, according to a 2012 to 2013 Prudential
Research study. LGBT households also may have more discre-
tionary income than the average American household because
fewer of them have children.

So why do you always feel broke? It may be that you have an

unfulfilling relationship with your money.

WITH PRIDE UPON US, NOWS A GREAT TIME TO TAKE STOCK

OF YOUR AND YOUR PARTNERS FINANCIAL HEALTH. HERE
ARE A FEW TIPS:

1. KNOW YOUR TYPE. Are you a saver or a spender? In a

relationship, two savers may appear a bit boring, but are more
likely to achieve their financial goals on time.
A. SAVER PLUS A SPENDER? This is a common combination.
Opposites often attract.
4. DO NOT SHARE DEBT, OTHER THAN A MORTGAGE OR
A HOME YOU ARE PURCHASING TOGETHER. If you need
a cosigner for a car or other credit, it probably means you
are trying to buy something that is mathematically out of
your league.

B. SAVER/SPENDER MIX? Relationship can work with full
disclosure and cooperation.

2. TALK REALISTICALLY ABOUT MONEY BEFORE YOU MOVE

sional to keep the information exchange on track.
3. SHARE EXPENSES 50/50 WHENEVER POSSIBLE.
Be mindful that inequality can breed resentment and
control issues.
5. MAINTAIN HEALTH INSURANCE. Explore all options with your
and your partners employers and associations first. If you are
self-employed or unemployed, at least purchase catastrophic
coverage, where you pay for the little things up to a higher de-
ductible, but youll have limited liability in the event of a large
hospital bill. Uninsured medical expenses can cause debt and
even bankruptcy. CBS news recently reported that the average
cost of an attack of appendicitis, for example, is $28,000!
6. HAVE AN EMERGENCY FUND. Calculate six months of
your bills, and strive to keep this amount in an account you
can access without penalty. This goes miles toward building
wealth versus digging yourself in a hole in the event of an
unexpected expense.
