BCAA Supplements Preserve Lean Muscle Mass During Weight Loss


A problem for athletes who want to lose weight yet maintain or improve fitness levels is that calorie restriction combined with strenuous exercise
reduces lean muscle tissue, limiting performance. A new study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition suggests
that athletes who take branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplements while on a low calorie diet can lose fat mass while maintaining lean muscle
mass, and preserve or even enhance their muscle performance.
In the 8-week study, two groups of resistance trained males were prescribed a low calorie diet and provided a
4 day/week body building resistance training program. One group was assigned a BCAA supplement, the other a
carbohydrate supplement. Muscle performance and body composition measurements were taken before and at
completion of the study.
As expected, both groups lost weight. But those who supplemented with BCAAs preserved lean muscle mass,
while the carb group lost lean mass. As for performance the BCAA group improved maximal strength on squat
and bench press exercises, while the only change in athletic performance among the carb supplemented group was
increased repetitions to fatigue on the parallel squat exercise.
