INTRODUCTION
The OmniStarGX2 system is a complete line of headend fiber optic products designed to
transport video and data signals in Cable Access Television (CATV) systems and related
applications. The OmniStar GX2 system is flexible in its application and includes a series of
modules and options that you can select to accommodate system requirements.
The OmniStar GX2-RX085BX4 return path receiver module is specifically designed for
RF-over-Glass (RFoG) and Fiber Deep applications that require large optical link budgets. The
module uses very low-noise photo detectors that enable the receiver to operate at very low
optical input powers. For typical RFoG networks, this increases the return path link budget
to optically combine up to 128 subscribers, increase link distances, and allow more RF
combining into a Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) port.
With four independent receivers in the module, the OmniStar GX2-RX085BX4 provides a
high- density solution to save rack space. It has a mode that accommodates the burst
protocol from RFoG ONU transmitters. An integrated low-noise preamplifier and
high-performance postamplifier offers high RF output level and exceptional distortion
performance. The GX2-RX085BX4 continues the GX2 tradition of module level intelligence.
The hot-swappable modules with unique embedded features, like Quick Swap module
configuration, maximize in service time by eliminating the need for manual configuration.
This receiver, coupled with the full complement of other OmniStar GX2 application modules,
provides extreme flexibility for network design and fiber link optimization.
This manual describes the ARRIS GX2-RX085BX4 quad return path optical receiver module,
which is used in headend and hub applications. The four receivers in the GX2-RX085BX4
share a common digital controller, but have independent outputs. Each receiver accepts
1310 nm, 1550 nm, 1610 nm, and CWDM modulated optical inputs and converts them to RF
in the passband from 5 MHz to 85 MHz.
Control for each receiver is done locally through the GX2-SDU100B Shelf Door Unit (SDU) or
the GX2-CM100B craft port interface. You can also perform remote monitoring and control
using a Network Management System (NMS).

OVERVIEW
OmniStar GX2 equipment is designed for increased rack density, reliability, ease of
operation, and computer aided troubleshooting through extensive network management.
All OmniStar GX2 application modules are accessible and replaceable from the front of the
GX2-HSG* equipment shelf, resulting in low time to repair. An installed module mates with
the equipment shelf connectors for signal interfacing and power. Fiber connections are
made at the front of a module.
The OmniStar GX2 housing incorporates blind mate connectors that enable all modules to
be hot swapped without removing the RF cables. When modules are replaced with power
applied to the equipment shelf, ensure that all laser hazard warnings provided in Chapter 3,
Installation, are strictly enforced.
You can install the GX2-RX085BX4 in any of the sixteen universal slots in the equipment shelf.
The narrow slot on the far right is reserved for the GX2-CM100B control module.
The GX2-HSG* can have a mix of different OmniStar GX2 modules. Figure 2.1 illustrates an
equipment shelf populated with four GX2-DM1000B*, seven GX2-LM1000B*, one
GX2-OA100B*, three GX2-RX1000B*, one GX2-RX085BX4, a GX2-CM100B control module and

The GX2-RX085BX4 has four independent receivers and a common digital controller. Each
receiver accepts both 1310 nm and 1550 nm optical inputs and converts them to RF. Each 2
receiver has an internal RF attenuator, controlled by the embedded circuit, that sets the
receiver output level.

Receiver Paths
Each receiver of the GX2-RX085BX4 accepts 1310 nm, 1550 nm, 1610 nm, and CWDM
wavelength optical inputs. The optical detector of each receiver demodulates its respective
optical input and provides an RF output. Detector current is monitored by the embedded
circuit and is used to determine the received optical power.
Directional couplers in the paths of all receivers tap off a 20 dB signal from the RF outputs
for transport to the RF test point (RF TP) through a user selectable internal switch. Individual
connectors mounted on the back panel of the GX2-RX085BX4 (Figure 2.5, Key 1) provide an
RF output for each receiver path.
Provides the ability to download new firmware code into the module through a
status monitoring and control interface with minimal interruption of operation
The quick swap module configuration saves operators time when replacing application
modules. When selected, the system saves all previous settings for a module and then
automatically downloads those settings to a new module of the same type when it is
installed in the same housing slot. This feature works in conjunction with the GX2-CM100B
module.
Communication Interfaces
You can monitor the GX2-RX085BX4 locally using the GX2-CM100B in conjunction with
Network Management Software. A PC interface is available through an Ethernet port on the
front of the GX2-CM100B. Using a standard Web browser, the graphical user interface (GUI)
provides a point and click method of monitoring and controlling the shelf.
For higher level management, you can easily connect the GX2-RX085BX4 to a remote
Network Management System using the standard Ethernet SNMP interface.
The GX2-RX085BX4 front panel provides an SC/APC bulkhead fitting for each receiver and an
RF output test point. It also includes a tri-color STATUS alarm indicator and Ethernet
redundancy connector. Alternatively, the GX2-RX085BX4/E has E2000 optical connectors.

The GX2-HSG* is now ready to accept the GX2-RX085BX4. However before you insert the
GX2-RX085BX4 into the GX2-HSG*, you need to perform some basic cleaning procedures on
the optical interfaces.
It is highly recommended that you perform the following cleaning procedures before you
install the GX2-RX085BX4 in the GX2-HSG*. GX2-RX085BX4 installation and routine
maintenance should be performed by properly trained personnel. In all cases, they should
be aware of and observe the following warnings associated with fiber optic receivers.
DANGER Invisible laser radiation when the module is open and the interlock defeated.
Avoid direct exposure to the beam. Do not look into the optical connector or a fiber
connected to the output of a laser module. Laser output is invisible and eye damage
can result.
CAUTION Handle fiber carefully and avoid sharp bends, strain, or pinching. Avoid
contacting the highly polished end of the exposed fiber at the connector by keeping
the protective boot in place when practical.
CAUTION Use of controls or adjustments, or performance of procedures other than
those specified herein, may result in hazardous radiation exposure.
3. Gently clean the barrel of the optical bulkhead fitting with a lint free swab as
illustrated in Figure 3.2.
Figure 3.2
1. Remove the protective boot from the end of the SC/APC connector.
2. Clean the tip gently with lint-free wipes moistened with 99% isopropyl alcohol.
3. Dry the SC/APC connector with compressed, filtered air or use a dry, lint-free wipe.
You are now ready to insert the GX2-RX085BX4 into the GX2-HSG*. All slots in the GX2-HSG*
are universal and intended for the Omnistar GX2 application modules, except the narrow,
right most slot which is reserved for the GX2-CM100B. All GX2 application modules can be
installed or removed in a powered-on or powered-off GX2-HSG*.

Typical GX2-HSG*
configuration
1. Pull on the latches at each end of the Shelf Display Unit and lower the SDU.
2. Slide the GX2-RX085BX4 fully into the designated shelf slot that contains the
previously installed G-to-F type connector mounted on the GX2-HSG*.
3. Ensure that a firm connection is achieved with the GX2-HSG* backplane. Power is
automatically applied when contact is made with the backplane connectors.
Inserting the
GX2-RX085BX4 in
the GX2-HSG*
2. Align the key on the SC/APC connector with the mating key slot of the optical
bulkhead fitting. Figure 3.6 illustrates proper SC/APC alignment with the optical
bulkhead fitting:
4. Push the SC/APC connector into the fitting until it snaps in place.
When the GX2-RX085BX4 is fully installed in the GX2-HSG* and power is applied, the
initialization process begins. The GX2-RX085BX4 STATUS LED completes a redyellow
green cycle. A continuous green LED indicates normal operating conditions. Upon initial
power up of a new unit, the GX2-RX085BX4 conforms to the factory default conditions.
With subsequent power ups the status LED completes its power on cycle, information stored
in the GX2-RX085BX4 NVM is recalled, and the unit defaults to the last stored operating
settings before power was disrupted.
You can use the SDU, local PC interface, or Network Management System to indicate and set
the wavelength for each optical signal into each receiver. After setting the wavelength, use
these tools to verify that the received optical power of each receiver is within the expected
range. The factory default is 1550 nm.
For proper return path level selections, see the Return Path Level Selection, Setup, and
Alignment Procedure Reference Guide.

OPERATION
This chapter describes the GX2-RX085BX4:
Operating modes
RF test point
RF output level
Embedded section
Network management
Operating Modes
Each receiver in the GX2-RX085BX4 module has three operating modes: Manual Gain Control
(MGC), Automatic Gain Control (AGC) and Off. You can control each receiver independently.
To set the operating mode of a GX2-RX085BX4 receiver, use the SDU, GX2-CM100 local PC
port, or Network Management System.
Off
In Off mode, the receiver RF output is minimal to enable removal of the signals from an
upstream receiver, transmitter, or set top terminal. The Off mode is also used to disable the
alarms from an inactive receiver.
Each receiver has an internal optical power meter that determines the received optical
power by measuring the optical detector current. Meter readings are accessed through the
SDU, GX2 CM100 local PC port, or a Network Management System. Readings are reported in
optical power (dBm) so you do not have to perform any conversions. The reported power is
4
dependent on the selected wavelength of the optical input signal.
RF Test Points
The front panel has one RF test point connector, through which you can measure the RF
output level for each receiver. The level at the test point is 20 dB below the respective
receiver RF output. You can select the RF test point for a particular receiver using the SDU or
control module.
RF Output Level
The RF output level from the GX2-RX085BX4 depends on the type of transmitter that is used,
the RF input level to the transmitter, the GX2-RX085BX4 gain setting, and the optical link loss
between the transmitter and the GX2-RX085BX4.
Table 4.1 shows the GX2-RX085BX4 RF output levels in dBmV. The values in parenthesis are
the recommended RF attenuator settings in the receiver to achieve optimum RF output
levels. Note that when high output powers are used and the link loss is low, high optical
power levels are available at receivers. It is recommended to add some passive optical loss
to reduce the optical input power to the receiver.

Redundant Switch Control
There are two ways to enable redundancy with the GX2-RX085BX4 for HFC/Fiber Deep
applications:
When the received optical power of the primary receiver drops below a user selectable
threshold, the receiver signals the GX2-RSW200B to switch to the redundant path. If the
optical power rises above the threshold by 0.8 dB for the user selected revert time, the
GX2-RSW200B is signaled to switch back to the primary input. (You can also set the
GX2-RSW200B for non revert mode which requires a manual intervention to cause the
reversion). For further details on GX2-RSW200B modes and operation see the GX2-RSW200B
Installation and Operation Manual. You can set the threshold to any optical input level within
most of the receivers normal operating range. The upper input power range is slightly
restricted to keep threshold hysteresis from preventing recovery.
When using two GX2-RX085BX4 modules in redundant configuration, follow the procedure
listed below:
1. Connect the two GX2-RX085BX4 modules together using a straight Ethernet RJ45
cable. The RJ45 cable can be up to 100 feet long.
4. Set the master unit switch mode to Alarm and Switch Mode.
5. Set the master units revert time, and optical threshold levels through the Switch 4
Mode Threshold setting.
7. Set the slave units switch mode to Alarm and Switch mode.
8. Set the slave units revert time, and optical threshold level through the Switch Mode
Threshold setting.
If you are using a redundant receiver, ensure that the slave (redundant) receiver has good
optical power. If the master (primary) receivers optical power falls below the set threshold,
it issues a minor alarm, indicates output 1 switched and turns off. It will turn on again and
display output 1 returned after the optical power is restored and the user selected revert
time is passed.
If the optical power in the redundant receiver (slave) falls below the switch mode threshold
limit, the module issues an alarm for that particular receiver.
When two GX2-RX085BX4 receivers are set in redundant configuration, revert time and the
optical threshold level of both master and slave receiver is very important if the optical
power falls below the Set threshold in both receivers. If the optical level in the primary
receiver falls below the set threshold, the primary receiver turns off and the corresponding
slave receiver turns on. If the primary receivers optical power recovers, it turns on after the
selected revert time.
Table 4.2 Redundancy functionality
Embedded Section
The microprocessor section contains memory to hold two separate banks of operating
firmware: factory code and download code. Factory code is programmed into the module at
the factory and is read only. Download code can be changed or updated by downloading new
firmware as described below.
The microprocessor internal memory also stores module information and calibration data
that is programmed at the factory.
The microprocessor contains an analog to digital (A/D) converter that controls and monitors
module operation. The module communicates to the GX2-CM100B control module through
the GX2-HSG* backplane.
If the CRC indicates errors in the firmware, the microprocessor checks to ensure that the
other bank contains valid firmware. The microprocessor verifies the CRC of the code in the
other bank and, if error free, begins operating with that firmware.
If an error occurs during the boot up, the STATUS LED illuminates red and an alarm message
indicating which bank failed is sent to the NMS.
If both banks fail the CRC test, the microprocessor stops operating and the receiver STATUS
LED blinks red to indicate that the boot up failed. The module continues to pass signal
without microprocessor control.
The NMS enables you to view the following information about the firmware programs stored
in the GX2-RX085BX4:
You have the option of selecting a specific module or all modules of the target type for
download. After you select all of the options, you can initiate the download.
To download firmware, the NMS must be running and communicating with the GX2-CM100B.
The GX2-CM100B and the NMS perform the following tasks to download the new firmware:
The NMS reads the firmware download file you selected and verifies the program
code CRC. The software reads the target module type and firmware revision to be
downloaded from the file and displays this information for your verification.
The Network Management System transfers the download firmware and selected
options to the GX2-CM100B. The GX2-CM100B verifies that the firmware was
transferred correctly and that the selected options are valid. If the GX2-CM100B
detects any errors it responds with an error message to the NMS. From this point on,
the firmware download is handled exclusively by the GX2-CM100B.
The GX2-CM100B is now ready to reset the GX2-RX085BX4 to run the new firmware
4 program. You can determine whether the reboot is immediate or occurs at a later
time following the issuance of a reset command. This option enables you to choose
between immediate, delayed, or scheduled reboots.
Refer to the GX2-CM100B Control Module Installation and Operation Manual for additional
information regarding the downloading of firmware.
Quick-Swap
The Quick-Swap feature reduces down time by eliminating the need to manually reconfigure
replacement application modules of the same type in the same housing slot. Replacement
modules are recognized and updated with settings stored by the GX2-CM100B control
module. This feature is particularly useful in the event of module failure.
The following module-specific parameters are contained in the Quick-Swap message sent
from the GX2-CM100B to the GX2-RX085BX4:
Module Alias
Mode setting
Wavelength setting
Attenuation setting
Alarm mode
Module configuration
Revert time
The GX2-RX085BX4 reads the Quick-Swap message from the GX2-CM100B, automatically
resets, and re initializes itself to the same configuration as contained in the message. If the
Quick-Swap message intended for the GX2-RX085BX4 is sent to another type of module, the
command is rejected and the module information is not replaced.
Instructions for selecting and implementing the Quick-Swap mode are provided in the
GX2-CM100B Control Module Installation and Operation Manual.
The receiver module monitors selected parameters during operation and compares the
measurements to a table stored in memory. This table defines high and low limits, as well as,
STATUS LED indication if a fault occurs. When a measurement exceeds the alarm limit, the
appropriate status LED is illuminated and the fault is reported to the control module. The
4
control module sends an EMS event trap and displays an alarm message on the SDU when
the module is selected. See Appendix C for detailed information on status reporting.
Table 6 lists the parameter effected and the corresponding factory set default value.

TROUBLESHOOTING
This section provides troubleshooting procedures for the GX2-RX085BX4. You can use the
procedures to correct minor problems or better define the malfunction. If the error condition
cannot be corrected, contact the TAC at 1-888-944-HELP (1-888-944-4357) or dial direct
847-725-4011. Before you call, record the following information:
Alarm messages
Operation mode
Actual optical input power level (measured with external optical power meter)
Table 5.1 lists the troubleshooting checks available and identifies the reported alarm
condition displayed through the optional SDU, network management system, or local access
port.
To use Table 5.1, refer to the appropriate row and column in the table. Perform the necessary
checks and make any suggested adjustments to resolve the problem. If the problem persists,
note the value in the Reported Value column. This information is useful when seeking
additional help from the TAC.
Table 5.1 Troubleshooting using available communication options
Table 5.2 lists the troubleshooting checks you can perform using the STATUS LED only. It is
assumed that an SDU, network management system, or local access port are not available.
If these additional options are available, this table can be used in conjunction with Table 5.1.
5 To use 5.2, identify the symptom and then perform the checks in the order listed under that
symptom. For example:
If the front panel STATUS LED is yellow indicating a minor alarm, go to the yellow
column.
Continue performing all checks in the yellow column, in the order given, to help
identify the cause of the minor alarm and if possible, fix the problem.
