HistoryofEnvironmentalManagementSystemstandards
Butfirst,letstakealookatthestorybehindISO14001.In1973,theEuropeanCommunityprinciplesIwaspublished,
whichwasactuallyanactionplanfortheapplicationofprotectivecautionsofenvironment.In1992,BSIGrouppublished
theworldsfirstEnvironmentalManagementSystemsstandard,BS7750.TheISO/TC207environmentmanagement
techniquecommitteewasestablishedin1993todeveloptheISO14000familyofstandards.In1994,theTS9719standard
(Environmentmanagementsystemgeneralfeatures)andBS7750suppliedthetemplateforthedevelopmentoftheISO
14000seriesin1996,bytheInternationalOrganizationforStandardization.InApril2005,ISO14001underwentitsfirst
revisionand11yearslater,thesecondrevisionispublished.

Alignment
ThenewversionofISO14001isalignedwithAnnexSL,whichmakesitmorecompatiblewithothermanagementsystems
standardslikeISO9001,ISO22301,ISO27001,andISO20000,andmakestheintegrationeveneasier.SeealsoHowto
integrateISO14001andISO9001.

Transitionperiod
Companiescertifiedagainstthe2004revisionofISO14001musttransitiontothenewversionbySeptember2018.But
dontbefooledbythisloosedeadlineleadcertificationbodiesannouncedtheywillstopcertificationagainstthe2004
revisionbySeptember2016,whichmeansthatyoucanbecertifiedagainsttheoldversionin2016andhaveyourlast
surveillanceauditagainsttheoldrevisionin2018.Whywaitsolong?Companiescannowbecomecertifiedagainstthe
newversionstartingSeptember2015.

Comparison
Thenewversionhas10clauses,insteadofthefourintheoldversionandinsteadof12mandatorydocuments,thereare
now16.Thiscanseem,atfirst,likeanincreaseinpaperwork,butletsfaceitnobodymanagedtoestablishtheirEMS
withonly12documents,soeverycompanywillmakeasmanydocumentsasneededitisonlyimportantnottooverwhelm

Requirements
Therearesomenewrequirements,butthemostsignificantareContextoftheorganization(Clause4)andActionsto
addressrisksandopportunities(Clause6.1).TheideabehindthesenewrequirementsistomaketheEMSapartof
everydaybusinessactivities,andviceversa.Ofcourse,someoldrequirementsarehistorynowenvironmentaltargets,
managementrepresentative,andpreventiveactionsarenolongerpartofISO14001.Onlytimewilltellwhichofthesewill

Similaritiesanddifferences
Asinanyotherrevision,therearesomepartswithonlyminorchangesandsomeothersthatsawsignificantchanges.
EnvironmentalPolicy,Leadership,Competence,Trainingandawareness,Managementreview,Internalaudit,and
Correctiveactionhadonlyslightchanges,andmostoftheexistingsystemrelatedtotheserequirementscanremainasit
was.ThesecondgroupthathasmoderatechangesincludesIdentificationandevaluationofenvironmentalaspects,
Environmentalobjectivesandplansforachievingthem,Emergencypreparednessandresponse,Performanceevaluation,
Documentmanagement,Communication,andEMSScope,andtheseelementsshouldberevisedandupdatedtobe
compliantwiththenewversion.

Last,butnotleast,isagroupofnewrequirementsthathastobeestablishedandincorporatedintotheexistingEMSfrom
scratch.Risksandopportunities,Contextoftheorganization,andInterestedpartiesarenewrequirementsthatneedtobe
met,andtheyshouldbeimplementedwithcautionbecausetheycastacompletelynewlightontheEnvironmental
ManagementSystem.

ManagementSystem.ItisabsolutelyclearthatISO14001,likeanyothermanagementsystemstandard,isadoubleedged
sword,anditcantworkifitsnotimplementedandmaintainedproperly,butifeverythingisdoneasitshouldbe,ISO
14001:2015willbringtoyourEMS:

The2015revisionofISO14001certainlybringsexcitementtotheauditors,consultants,andcompanies,asitbringssome
newchallengestoovercome.But,hopefully,theultimategoalwillbeachieved:improvementoftheEnvironmental
ManagementSystems,andconsequently,betterprotectionoftheenvironmentitself.
