n this era of smart phones and screens that fuel concerns that kids will become detached twitching indoor albino creatures that no not of
nature or social norms, its encouraging that there are three healthy junior sailing programs in Marina del Rey that prove just the opposite.
For the longest time there were two solid programs coming out of the Del Rey Yacht Club and Cal Yacht Club, but recently the Santa
Monica Windjammers Yacht Club has brought another junior program to the scene and what theyve created is something people are clearly
responding to. Currently, they are nearly at capacity in their summer sailing camp with six US SAILING trained instructors keeping an eye
on as many as 33 sailboats driven by kids anywhere from 7 to 15 years-old.
The idea behind this particular junior program is in response to what Cal YC and Del Rey YC are running. Steve Potter who designed and spearheaded
the current format with the help of instructors John Richardson and David Kirby, noticed there was a place for a program that would allow non club
members to get their kids involved in sailing for an affordable price. He also wanted to make something that would be slightly less formal with the
end game of forging a love of sailing over racing-related pursuits. They designed something that was very simpletwo groups: new to sailing and
continuing sailors. Kids are given the freedom and flexibility to challenge themselves as they see fit.
I knew we werent going to try and duplicate what Cal and Del Rey Yacht do, said Potter of how things were created. We wanted to be open to the
public and not a member driven program, we had to be affordable and we had to fill that niche where racing wasnt the overriding concern.
Potter has worked hard to provide this third option for parents who are interested in a sailing summer camp but has also developed an opportunity for
kids to sail year round. Unlike the other two clubs, Santa Monica Windjammers has a year round program for continuing sailors and has also partnered
with some local charter schools that utilize the STEM [science, technology, engineering and math] learning concept that marries science with real-life
activities like sailing.
For his efforts and dedication to growing more participation in sailing, Potter was awarded both Sportsman of the Year and Yachtsman of the Year
honors from the Southern California Yachting Association and Association of Santa Monica Bay Yacht Clubs respectively. The Jr. Program Coordinator
admits that the program has become something of an obsession but one that reaps rewards for others. He says he was happy to be recognized but is more
proud of how the program is going and how fast it has so quickly grown.
Im happy with the speed at which its grown and that its stayed on track with its initial goals, Potter said. [To] be community basednot member
