- MS 4 resit assigment -

This assignment will be composed out of 5 questions. The assignment is made individually, though you
are allowed to work together with one another person. If you decide to work together you need to include
this in your discussion. Explaining the roles of the individuals, and all the pros and cons (dont make it a
personal reflection).
Hint: use the solver to check your work
Grading:
- max points (per question) if the question is right
- 50% of the points if the question is wrong, but the method is right (due to small mistakes the end
answer is wrong).
- 0 points if wrong
DEADLINE: 13-07-207, time 12:00!

DISCUSSION (5 points)
To be written by every student.

Question 1 LP problem (30 points

Solve the following problem
The airbus cable subsidiary company ACS owns production plant at each of these springs. APS produces:
ACS blue, ACS green, and ACS red. The ACS headquarters determine the amounts of cable that each
plant should produce in the forthcoming period. Relevant factors are the number of available meters of
metal wire (note that 1 of wire yields 1m of cable), and the number of available working hours per plant
as indicated in the following table:

plant location maximum number available

of available m working hours
Paris 400 1800
London 900 3200
Amsterdam 550 2300
Berlin 350 1200
Each of the three cable types has a certain (expected) profit and a certain number of needed working
hours. Furthermore, for each cable type there is an upper limit on the number of produced meters, the so-
called production ceiling:

cable type production ceiling needed expected

in meters working hours profit per
per meter meter in

blue 700 2 550

green 800 4 400
red 300 3 350

The goal of ACS headquarters is of course to maximize the overall expected profit.
A) Formulate a linear programming model for this problem mathematically.
- State your variables; (5 point)
- the objective function; (5 point)
- and the constraints. (5 point)
B) Explain the meaning of your
- variables; (5 point)
- constraints; (5 point)
- and justify your objective function. (5 point)

Question 2: Tableau (30 points)

Solve the following LP problem; use the right method (simplex or big M). Give a clear explanation on the
method you use. (Put everything in the right form, add the right surplus, artificial or slack variables, and
use the tableau correctly, and give a clear answer. All the iterations need to be clearly shown!)
Max Z =60x1 + 30x2 + 20x3
Constraints:
8x1 + 6x2 + x3 48
2x1 + 1.5x2 +0.5 x3 8
4x1 + 2x2 + 1.5x3 20
8x1 + x2 + x3 5

Question 3: Graphical method (20 points)

An airline is catering food on a flight to New York. Due to the cabin conditions at cruising altitude, extra
supplements are added, to increase taste. The supplements used are supplied by two suppliers, Brand A
and brand B. both supplements are used in the products (a mix). The minimum requirements for the
catered food, is that it contains 60 grams of protein and 30 grams of Fat. Brand A has 15 grams of protein
and 10 grams of fat, and costs 80 cents. Brand B has 20 grams of protein and 5 grams of fat, and costs 50
cents per unit.
How much of every brand should be used to minimize costs?
