BIM Protocols
For many BIM may be more about collaboration and less
about tech!

The 'Information' is KEY, just as important as any BIM

design model or maybe more.

What you put in is what you get out

The I in BIM- Information!

BIM protocols are required to set out the responsibilities of

individuals and teams within a project.

A protocol document is an additional supplementary legal

document between all the parties involved within a project.

The document acts as a starting place to set out the BIM

goals, what needs to be emphasised though is that this is not
the end for the document!

!
The document should act as a continuous point of reference
throughout the life of the project for the whole team
The I in BIM- Information!
The execution plan document acts as a road map for the
entire life of a project.

The whole ethos of a planning document is to improve the

process of planning and implementing a project.

Keeping the team involved up to date and clear of

responsibilities is a key driver for a good project

Example doc of the CIC BIM PROTOCOL
2013
General principles adopted in the
drafting of the Protocol.

The Protocol attempts to make the

minimum changes necessary to the
pre-existing contractual arrangements
on construction projects;

The Protocol aims to ensure that

there is an obligation on parties to
provide defined elements of their
works/services using models;

Example doc of the CIC BIM PROTOCOL
2013

A BIM Protocol acts as a

contractual document which
takes precedence over
existing agreements;

The Protocol should be

treated as a flexible document
and should be suitable for use
on all Level 2 BIM projects.

COLLABORATIVE BIM
PROJECT TOGETHER

Example doc of the CIC BIM PROTOCOL
2013

Key principles of the application of the CIC BIM Protocol are

as follows:

The same version of the Protocol and Appendices should be

incorporated into each contract.

A BIM protocol should be incorporated into all BIM projects as

is a standard set for level 2 BIM
