Research in the Mineral Industries (APCOM2001) was successfully held from 2527
by UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA on 04/25/15. For personal use only.

April 2001 at Beijing campus, China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT).
The International Symposium on Application of Computers and Operations Re-
search in the Mineral Industry (APCOM) has been the major forum for discussion
on the application of computer methods in the mineral industries for four decades.
On the threshold of a new millennium, China University of Mining and Technology
(CUMT) organized and sponsored the 29th APCOM (APCOM2001) to promote
international cooperation and exchanges related to theoretical and practical aspects
of computer applications in mining. This is the first time that China has hosted
the APCOM since it made its debut at the University of Arizona in 1961 and the
Chinese government has paid more attention to this symposium. Senior officers of
the Chinese government, including Vice-Chairman of the Chinese Peoples Political
Consultative Conference and Vice-Minister of education ministry of the Peoples
Republic of the China, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches.
253 delegates from 29 countries participated in 11 technical sessions and 185
papers were presented during the three-day symposium. The technical topics cov-
ered exploration, geostatistics, resource estimation and ore body modeling, planning
and design for surface and underground mine, mining systems simulation and com-
puter visualization, mine transport, mineral processing application, ventilation and
safety, computer applications in ground control and slope stability, environmen-
tal engineering, mine closure and restoration, project management and economic
analysis, and other aspects (such as AI, IT, GPS) of computer applications in the
mineral industry. One panel discussion was held to focus on Research and Develop-
ment of 3S(GIS, GPS and RS) and 3DGM(3 Geoscience/Geology Modeling) in the
mining industries. Meanwhile, eight mining related software companies involved in
the exhibition during the symposium.
Everyone enjoyed world-renowned Chinese hospitality during the symposium.
The following words are from the letter of a young geologist Dan Hack, USA, who
brought his beautiful wife and two cute kids to participate in the APCOM2001,
My sincerest appreciation for your hospitality in Beijing. My family had a won-
derful time, and I am glad we made the journey. My wife mentioned that she felt

more welcome in Beijing than any other city she has visited. Thank you for your
consultation, and encouragement to make the trip. We found the city very easy to
navigate by taxi, and very safe.
The APCOM2001 was co-sponsored by Technische Fachhochschule Georg Agri-
cola University of Applied Sciences (TFH) in Germany.
