Graduates, you must
never stop learning
This weekend, hundreds of
Livingston County students
will walk across stages in au-
ditoriums and gymnasiums
to accept their high school
diplomas.
Then, they will celebrate the
fact that they have concluded
a vitally important chapter of
their lives.
It is a deserved honor. A lot
of hard work went into the ac-
complishment and displaying
pride in achieving that goal is
good for them and us.
But, the learning is not over.
Graduation or com-
mencement is also a begin-
ning. The celebration of an-
other journey on which these
students will soon embark.
It may be on to college, a
gap year, work or military ser-
vice.
But the one lesson they all
must remember is that learn-
ing does not end with school.
Successful people are con-
stantly evolving and always
learning.
Try not to rely only on
what you have learned in the

Local Stars shine in RBTL awards program

The stages of Livingston County may seem a dream
away from Broadway, but they still shine with local
young actors.
Several area schools were among the winners
this spring at the Rochester Broadway Theatre
Leagues annual Stars of Tomorrow awards pro-
gram, which celebrates high school theater in a
nine-county greater Rochester area that includes
Livingston County.
The Geneseo Central School production
of The Addams Family nearly swept the
RBTLKs annual awards, winning in nine of
the 10 categories. The production won a total
of 11 awards, including outstanding musical
production and multiple honors for leading
actress and supporting actor. An additional 13
students were recognized with special achieve-
ment awards outside of the main categories.

Olivia Brumeld is the
Caledonia-Mumford Central
School Class of 2017 valedic-
torian.
She has made the most of
her high school years at Cale-
donia-Mumford by participat-
ing in a variety of activities and
taking the most challenging
courses offered at at the high
school.
I know I speak for most
seniors in high school when
I say its not as simple as ev-
eryone thought, Olivia says.
However, Im getting better
with it. The years of sleepless,
homework lled nights are be-
ginning to pay off.
Olivia, the daughter of
Brenda Brumeld, took sev-
eral Advanced Placement and
college credit bearing courses.
She has been a high honor stu-
dent, a member and president
of the National Honor Society
and has earned numerous ac-
ademic achievement awards.
In 2016, Olivia received the
University of Rochester Baus-
ch and Lomb Honorary Sci-
ence Award. She received the
Principals Citizen of the Year
Award as freshman. In the
summer between her junior
and senior year, Olivia partic-
ipated in the week-long Girls
State program at SUNY Brock-

Bulldogs rallied from a 7-1

enth for a walk-off 9-8 win.
With the victory came a
state title and the 2016-17 high
school sports season ttingly
closed on a high note. The Livonia Bulldogs baseball team did the improbably coming back from a 7-1 decit to win the New York State Class B

and this year was no different
we handed out a grand total
of 13 (team) sectional titles,
one team state championship,
one Federation, and three in-
dividual state crowns from late
October to early June.
Needless to say, it will be a
year our athletes particularly
the seniors will not forget
anytime soon.

Winter
The Perry boys basket-
ball team, led by Livingston

Cowie(junior), were arguably
LCAAs best team this year and
nished the regular season
as Section Vs lone unbeaten
team at 20-0.
However, an upset in the
seminals of the sectional
tournament ended the Yellow-
jackets postseason hopes.
Coming into the postseason
tournament with a 10-10 re-
cord, the Geneseo boys in ex-
tremely unlikely fashion was
the lone LCAA Section V win-
ner (C1) this winter, thanks
to Kyle Rollins. The 6-foot-6-
inch senior stud averaged 26
points, 11 rebounds and ve
blocks during the sectional
playoffs, including a 37-point,
12-rebound, 11-block perfor-
mance in the rst round en
route to the programs rst
title in 15 years.
Geneseo defeated a well-
coached Cal-Mum squad in a
memorable title game.
Yorks Clay Cutting, de-
spite his 5-foot-8-inch frame,
nished the year as not only
one of LCAAs best players,
but most improved as well.
He averaged nearly 20 points
per game after averaging just
6 the year before, and was in-
strumental in guiding his team
to 19 wins and a return trip
to the sectional nals, where
the Golden Knights lost once
again to private school C.G.
Finney by 10 points.
On the girls side, three
juniors Julia Mertsock of
Letchworth, Jadyn Abrams of
Bath and Alex Button of Way-
land-Cohocton averaged
at least 17 points per contest.
Abrams led the LCAA with 20.1
points, while Gillian Flint of
Cal-Mum led all seniors with a
17.1 points per game average.
Flint showed she was the best
player in the LCAA earning the
coveted LCN Player of the Year
award for the rst time.
Meanwhile in wrestling,
Yorks Clay Cutting averaged nearly 20 points per game in
guiding the Golden Knights to 19 wins and a return trip to the
sectional nals.
Warsaw senior Noah Grover
redeemed himself in the state
tournament after losing in
the rst round in 2015 with a
Division II state title in the 160
pound group. Grover capped
off his season with a 39-1 over-
all record, and also helped his
team capture the sectional
title.
Perry senior Jeff Uveino
placed fourth in the state
tournament, and also won the
Section V title at 195.
Spring
The spring was without a
doubt LCAAs most success-
ful season, with seven teams
taking home a sectional title
three in track, two in baseball,
one in softball, one in tennis
and one in golf, while one
earned its rst state champi-
onship.
The Geneseo softball team
and its experienced offense
rode the arm of sophomore
pitcher Jessica Ruskauff all
the way to the programs rst
sectional title, while Avon and
Livonia upheld their strong
reputations on the baseball
diamond.
Livonia lefty pitcher Reid
VanScoter threw an unthink-
able 21 strikeouts with a
no-hitter in his teams 12-0
sectional win over Hornell.
VanScoter also picked up the

Livonia not only earned
their programs rst state
baseball title but the Bulldogs
are the rst team from the
LCAA to get the state crown
and also the rst team in
Section V Class B to earn the
championship.
In the state nals against
private school Albany Acad-
emy for Boys, eighth-grader
Alex Minnehan came up huge
with a strong 5-1/3 inning
pitching performance along
with the big two-out, two RBI
hit in the bottom of the sev-
enth that tied the game at 8-8.
A few seconds later, on the
very rst pitch, senior Brody
Metcalf would hit the shot
heard round the state as he
ripped the game-winning sin-
gle past third to score senior
John Smith with the winning
run and send Bulldog Country
into pandemonium.
For Geneseo, Jessica Rus-
kauff allowed just four earned
runs during her softball teams
four sectional victories culmi-
nating with a 1-0 shutout win
over Gananda, whereRuskauff
also provided the games lone
run with an inside-the-park
home run.
With the softball win, Gen-
eseos Emily Podhorecki be-
came the LCAAs lone athlete
to win a sectional title in all
three of her sports this season.
